can i jailbreak my phone without touching the phone baseband??

if i can do that, does it mean i am able to jailbreak iphone 3.1 without waiting for the dev team to release a jailbreaked iphone 3.1 firmware?

If it is unlocked you can use a non at&t (or whatever wireless service Apple wants you to use in your respective country) sim card and the stock apple os. The only hitch is that you may lose some minor service functions like the visual voice mail but the phone and apps will work fine.

If you have 3g/3gs then just use redsn0w. It will only jailbreak. If its a 2g then just make sure to untick the unlock option in redsn0w. Thats it.
