Acer osx
I'm impressed with os x, it even runs quick on my 1.7ghz celeron hackbook.

so, I will soon be purchasing a macbook pro.

can I use the migration assistant to copy my programs, folders etc?

btw the hackbook has no firewire but I do have a wireless network.

It should work if you don't have any osx86 things in your folders you want to copy. Like sleepwatcher in your home folder, etc.

it might not work quite like migration assistant, but using a wireless network should allow you to transfer files and folders. i had to use it between linux and osx in VMWare, i networked my external drive so i could access it in VMWare with osx to install software for my iphone.

i think if you get a USB cable for computer to computer connections, you should be able to do it though, i don't think it's limited to firewire, i think you just wouldn't be able to mount and boot off the connected laptop. i could be wrong though, i've never tried it that way.

Cheers, hadn't thought of usb - that should work and be quicker than wireless!

I've used Migration Assistant, and it works.

I did it without firewire, but I used an external HD instead.

I am not all too familiar but I believe you can. Unless you did an EFI emulation and was able to install a vanilla, unmodified version of OSX, I would be cautious, and hope that the migration assistant does not bring over the modified kexts, etc.

I don't see that happening, but it is just something to keep in mind

You can use an Ethernet cable to transfer your files.
