After talking with many people, I've found that the operating systems listed seem to be the most popular. I would like to see what the wiki group here at osx86project think is the most formidable operating system. When deciding consider:

- stability
- reliability
- speed
- boot time
- environment (GUI)
- software/hardware compatibility
- ease of use
- file sharing
- networking
- virus/trojan/spyware protection
Colonel
Mac OS X is by far my favorite. I'm a switcher from Windoze and I'll never go back. Windows seems to old fashioned and out of date. Mac always seems new and reliable.
Franzy
haha yeah i know what you mean. But i mean, games, software, etc have huge compatibility issues w/ mac. With windows, you always know it works.

just remove "software/hardware compatibility", then you can also remove winxp of your list wink.gif

Even though I voted for OS X Tiger (becuase I use that the most), I feel that each OS has it's advantages and disadvantages... My three main Operating Systems I use are; OS X, XP, and Ubuntu. Ubuntu and OS X and used for mainly the same thing, and XP is used for games (which I rarely play anymore... I really should get this 7800GT working!).

Maybe I'll have only one favourite OS in a 2 years, maybe I'll have more. But, I sure don't have one favourite OS right now...

yeah u never no. Notice i put Windows Vista up even though its in beta version. I voted for Vista because ive had the opportunity to test Windows Vista beta 2 build 5308 and its brilliant. I admit, the GUI is very mac-looking and i am more than sure microsoft stole more than one idea from apple (sidebar's 'gadgets' as opposed to the very similar dashboard 'widgets'; invisible environment of aero glass to apple's) But, vista is something. I'm running ultimate edition, which will be the best release of vista, most wanted, and most pirated. It is amazing. It's very stable, very compatible with all of my hardware so far. Some of them were auto-recognized, without the given install disk. Even viruses and spyware seem less frequent - i havent gotten any so far. Simply superb - only thing is that the GUI is a bit complex so you need a good computer 512+ mb RAM. So, i gave my vote to Vista, not because i use it the most, but because i see the most potential thus far. I can't really say i used it the most because it is a beta version, so it is a bit annoying to work in it vs xp and mac. I can say that Mac vs XP vs Vista always gives me problems. idk which to put on my laptop, computer (since the hard drive space is limited - 60 gigs on laptop, 80 on comp). I just crashed my mac messing around with my drivers (trying to help a kid). So, I'm thinking i go vista and xp and install mac on another drive (which i would have to buy). If any1 has any opinions or suggestions for my operating system predicament, please share.

Meh, I like windows the best. Mac is a userfriendly OS, windows just works.

windoze and security dont even belong in the same sentence.
if u think a geeeky 15 year old can hack into aLMo57 ANY
win sys, u oughta see what one of my teachers can do!
well, i use win, ubuntu/debian/, and osx, each has its benefits,
i voted for Ubu. bec i cant let it go voteless smile.gif

I dont think anything can be read into the results. biggrin.gif its just for fun biggrin.gif

I'd say that SuSE or Ubuntu make excellent server platforms. They have all the required functionality - plus they are FREE!!

Windows is unbeatable for support in HW and SW, especially games.

OS X has the looks and, im glad to say, is starting to get the SW and HW support it needs.

As a desktop OS, Windows clinches it for me - purely for the games. But im buying a MacBook on release day cos it ticks all the boxes.

I voted OS X cos i think its better as an OS. It might have less support, but it IS better.

I remember some years back there was show called Screen Saver. Hosted by Leo Laporte, Patrick Norton and Kevin Rose (of Digg), They challenge everyone to hack into their XP system. And you know what ,NOBODY managed to hack it. So stop this BS. censored2.gif

id have to agree.. the only reason that windows users are the target of attacks is because so many of them are just plain retarded. if they get hacked, they are stupid. i have used windows xp since 2001 and HAVE NEVER gotten a virus or a system screwup. i have downloaded from bt sites, i have messed around with starforce etc. etc. etc... what do you say to that? granted, its not the best os now but if you arent an idiot (YUP, IF YOU ARE NOT A FRIGGIN' IDIOT!) then you wont have problems.

Because they made it intentionally harder for anyone to hack the system. It became a biased test. If you took a Windows box, a Linux Box, and a Mac box and just connected them to the internet, which system would get hacked first? Don't even mention "well, if you enable this..." because it's not a part of this challenge. Right out of the box, which one gets hacked first? In under twenty minutes? Or was it six now?

Ubuntu reminds me a lot of OS 9 for some reason (in terms of the GUI used). and I loved OS 9.

I think you missed the point , he said any win sys. And i agree with you that out of the box windows system are more vulnerable to hacking. But with properly secured one you will have a hard time hacking it. And in fairness to Mom and Pop and ordinary Joe (calling them retard is not a good idea) that have no idea about securing their system, you cant blame them because nobody told them so.

i personally havent used the vista beta, but it is looking pretty good. i just hope that its not too bloated and that the x1600 can handle the new dx10 games.

Ive used ubuntu a bit. i loved my experience with it. if i had to have a linux, i would most definitely choose ubuntu.

oh, what can i say about windows. ive used it all of my life, and i love it for directX. but if dx9 was ported... i would never go back again. there is always an osx alternative.

i have used tiger for a month or so, and i freaking love it. everything i need, wrapped up in an easy to use, easily customizable, and amazing looking gui. i voted for tiger, just because it simply owns. x11 windowing system support and command line rock too. guitar.gif

Here's an update:

So far - Mac OS X Tiger is dusting the competition at 46 votes (75.41%)
SUSE - 1 vote (1.64%)
Ubuntu - 3 votes (4.92%)
Vista Beta 2 - 4 votes (6.56%)
XP - 7 votes (11.48%)

I expected such - we are the osx86 forum biggrin.gif. Still, xp is maintaining second - still far behind Mac. After XP, Vista - XP's successor as of the beginning of 07'. Right behind is Ubuntu, and in last SUSE.

Thanks for your comments. If you didn't vote, Vote!!

the thing with Mac OS X is this: even if you're a friggin idiot, you will not get a virus or get hacked.
