System: iMac 17" 800mhz

I replaced the faulty board I had with a new one. The new board powered on and work perfectly, then I replaced the hard drive that was failing with a spare one I had. The hard drive was detected but I did reboot once or twice before I would format. Suddenly that had drive wasn't being detected anymore, even though the system booted from installation cd's fine. The hard drive was a regular one not a Mac hard drive, although I don't think this would be the reason.

To make the story short, I rebooted a couple of times and the processor started overheating. The computer was working even while it was getting very hot. I turned it off to work on it the next day. I went to boot it again and the system turned on, fan was working like always, but I get no video, post or the music you hear when you turn it on.

Anyone has any idea what it could be or what I could do?!? Any help is greatly appreciated!

The iMac G4's were always terrible to take apart and put back together. It sounds like the thermal pipe (it isn't a pipe, but rather a flat piece of metal) isn't in there or isn't attached just right.

Like I said, it's an evil thing to put back together, so good luck.

Yes, horrible construction, specially if you have to replace or fix anything inside. I placed the original heatsink (or thermal piple) from the old board to the new one. I made sure it was set on tight, even put a little thermal grease on it like I would with any new processor.

I just can seem to get it to post after it overheated.
