If you install updates or install ilife '09 you WILL get a kernel panic! But don't freak out, here's how to fix it!!!

First you'll need windows XP/Vista to boot on. Next Download MacDrive then install it and reboot.
After reboot you want to go to your drive where your OS X is installed on, then goto: /System/Library/Extensions/nForceATA.kext.
And remove it.
It worked flawlessly on my computer. If it's not nForceATA.kext then boot on you OS X using -V (Verbose) lookup what kext is causing the problem and remove it. (this is recommend to do first.)

P.s It doesn't work always.

REMEMBER BACK-UP YOUR FILES BEFORE REMOVING THEM!


Hi everyone,

Yesterday i installed Kalyway on my PC the install was flawless but when booting i did -f for the first boot and i got an error like "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button..." (you know what i mean right?)
And when i just do a normal boot it gets stuck at the grey apple loading screen, but nothing freezes the spinning loading indicator stays spinning so Mac OS X just doesn't want to boot or something .

P.s I don't know what drivers i had to install at the install from the DVD, maybe that's the problem, and a bigger problem is that i don't know how to see my computer's specs.

Please help me.

Edit#2: It get's better and better. I've got iDeneb to work . I installed ALL chipset kexts EXEPT nForceATA and nForceATA TEST.
(I pooped up kalyway 10.5.2 by updating it to 10.5.6 via apple update xD that's how i got to install iDeneb.)

As a guide to Hackentosh newcomers wishing to utilize OS X on an nforce3, I have decided to write about my trials of getting my nofrce3 to play nicely with OS X. My system consists of the following: (NOT MY SYSTEMSPECS)

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ @ 2.4 GHz
Gigabyte K8NS with nForce3 250 chipset
nVidia GeForce 7900 GS OC AGP by eVga
2048 mb of DDR 3200
2 x 200 GB IDE HDD / 1 x 30 GB IDE HDD / 1 x 74 GB SATA HDD
Windows Vista x32 Ultimate Edition with SP1
Kalaway Leopard v10.5.2
After many attempts to get a bootable operating system… here I am!! I am blogging from ScribeFire for Firefox on Mac OS X Leopard

The biggest problem I had faced during installation attempts was due to me having an nforce 3 chipset…. This was solved by useing the VIA SATA kext, along with totally leaving out the nforce package. My setup options were composed of:

(all with a √ is what i did and with a X i did NOT)

BIOS: disable SATA during install [X] (i have IDE)
AMD Patch 1 + Legacy flag [√]
sleepkernel [√]
lastsmbios [√]
All chipsets EXCEPT nforceata [√]
forcedeth / network [√]
ac97 / audio [√] (Still have to fix my creative soundblaster live 5.1)
nvinject 256 / vga [√]
USB fix [X]
After the initial setup has completed, I re-enabled SATA via the BIOS. [X]

Boom! Worked without needing flags. The only fixes I had to apply were the PS2 controller permissions, as I am useing a PS2 keyboard combined with a usb mouse.

I've installed iDeneb v1.4 again (7-7-09) and here's the new list i used:

BIOS: disable SATA during install [X] (i have IDE)

Everything works still perfect, exept the PS2 kext, you'll have to install a patched one. (The wird thing was that i installed the PS2 kext from the installer menu and only worked for a minute )

Alright, after 3, new and fresh installations i MAYBE have found the problem of ALL of this. It seems that i have to install AppleVIAATA.kext for chipset and nothing else, because the weird thing is that i don't select the AppleNForceATA in the install menu and it still gets installed... So i'm going to try to only install ONE chipset kext and not what i did above. An if that doesn't work i'm going to try to remove the AppleNForceATA from the dvd is that BTW a good idea? or do i get the "still waiting for root device" crap, either way, i've had OSx86 earlier on my computer and i WILL succeed again(untill my head blows up )

Aargh!! Still not working, i'm going back to Kalyway and use the iDeneb's combo update to update kalyway 10.5.2 to 10.5.7. And i need to learn back-up things, because this is the 2nd time i'm downloading Kalyway in one month. So yeah... i'll update when i'm going to install kalyway (Downloading 550 kb/s from 35 seeds of the 290. About an hour, so i'm going to no-life on chris pirillo (for the ones who want to know WTF he is, go to; http://live.pirillo.com/ or http://chris.pirillo.com/live. )

Ok, ok, so kalyway gives an error when verfying the disk after burning (1x speed) well, back to iDeneb and search for the problem and fix it.

Finnaly got iDeneb installed again, because i had to do some things last day's ^.^ but now i'll install programs and kexts and see what they do.
But VERY FIRST i'm going to back-up my extensions folder and kernel, because i don't want to install iDeneb again >.>

P.s I'll update this post as soon i've found a kext or program that panics or crashes my computer, so i can make a list to fix and warn people about these errors.

Allright, so the first SUCCESSFULLY reboot has been done but i didn't install anyting so... eh... right. That's why i'm going to install Adobe Photoshop CS4, if it give a panic it sucks if not then:

Yaaaay, i've got Photoshop CS4 & CleanMyMac installed, rebooted and still no kernel panic. I think the panic is being caused by kx audio driver or the ps2 fix. I don't dare to install those kexts because my computer will panic

Always boot with -v until you get your machine up and running where you want it. You may also want to give -x a try. This will boot you into Safe Mode loading only necessary kexts. Similar to Safe Mode in Windows

You can use the Kalyway disk I am pretty sure there should be an AMD Patch option on that disk. You would save yourself a great deal of trouble by going with a more recent version. Look for 10.5.6 or 10.5.5 iDeneb is a great choice. There is an option for AMD Patch option on that disk.

AMD users require software to be patched before it will work property. There are several utilities out there that will do this but the easiest fix is using the Voodoo kernel, which will patch on the fly along with a host of other useful features.

Do you have an actual graphics card PCI/AGP or is it integrated. If its integrated you may not be able to get full graphics support.

Ill try to explain as best as I can.

1. System Specs Before we even talk about kexts (drivers) we need to find out exactly what hardware you are running. You will want to find the following:

1. CPU
2. Motherboard Manufacturer & Model

a. Chipset (Also known as North Bridge and South Bridge)
b. Audio Chipset
c. Network Chipset

3. Graphics Card Manufacturer & Model (If your 6200 is integrated into the motherboard you will have a hard time)
4. Is your hard drive connected via PATA or SATA (PATA being the old EIDE ribbon cable)
5. Is your computer a name brand unit or a homebuilt If its a name brand list the brand and model number.

If you have a name brand computer you can check the manufacturers website to get the specs sheet.

2. Kext "Kernel Extensions" are actually folder, which if you remove the .kext from the end you will see them as such. They are basically drivers and are stored in the /System/Library/Extensions folder. They are generally incorporated in updates from Apple or in package installers from 3rd parties. Though you will most likely find them as just kext files here on this forum.

OSX builds a cache file of all of the kexts called "Extensions.mkext" which is located in the /System/Library/ folder. When you start your machine OSX will load kexts from this cache file to save time. (Using the -f boot-flag will force OSX to load kexts directly from the Extensions folder instead of this cache)

In order for Kexts to work properly they must have the proper ownership and permissions. Using KextHelper (Available here: http://cheetha.net/ and also generally available as an option during install) will install the kext and apply the proper ownership and permissions. As an additional step I prefer to also boot using the -f boot-flag.

3. Installation When you initially install your goal should be to get into OSX as choosing the wrong option or multiple options will definitely cause problems and may keep you from booting. Get a sheet of paper and write down the options you choose so that if you have problems you can post about it or at least not make the same mistake.)
1. Kernel - I would choose 9.5.0 Voodoo kernel if there is an option as this make life on AMD a great deal easier
2. Video - Don't choose anything we will fix this later
3. Chipset - Since we dont know for sure you may choose multiple options as long as they do not conflict (So only choose one VIA or one nForce option)
4. Audio - If you know the chipset for your audio then select the appropriate option (ALC882,ALC883,Sigmatel 9200.......) If not we will get to that later
5. Ethernet - Same as above if you know then choose if not then dont.
6. Fixes/Patches -

1. If you are install 10.5.6 and you selected Voodoo kernel then you will need the Seatbelt.kext from 10.5.5. If there is no option for this then we will fix it later. This will prevent you from mounting DMG images (common format for downloads for macs)
2. AMD Fix - if it offers it select it though I think Voodoo kernel would take care of it.

7. Application - Choose what you like but Kext Helper and Pacifist are very useful

Remember to always boot using the -v boot-flag

4. Post installation - Lets say you are now able to boot into OSX (If not see bottom of post for troubleshooting) You should follow the following procedures to get your hardware working.

1. Backup your Extensions Folder & Your kernel so that you can restore files instead of reinstalling. You can do this by typing the following in Terminal (Located in Applications/Utilities folder)

cp -R Extensions/ /backup/
cp -R /mach_kernel /mach_kernel.backup

With Explanations:
1. Give yourself root privileges so that you can modify files.

2. Graphics Support - You will want to try to get QC/Ci Quartz Extreme & Core Image supported as this is required for many applications to run properly. I dont consider a Hack without this support as something really usable.
Lets say your 6200 is an AGP or PCI express card. You would want to install something like NVinject, NVkush or NVdarwin. Ive had best like with the first two. You can do a google NVinject and NVkush is linked in my signature. They both include installers but you can install them using Kext Helper. The key here is that install more than one WILL cause problems so just one at a time.

3. Audio/Networking...
Once we have the proper kext you can install them using the methods below.

5. Manually install a Kext
You can follow the procedure below to manually install a kext

1. Give yourself root privileges so that you can modify files.

6. Set the proper permissions for the extensions folder.

chmod -R 755 Extensions/

7. Set the proper ownership for the extensions folder.

chown -R root:wheel Extensions/

8. Touch the extensions folder

CODE

touch Extensions/

9. Remove the extensions cache to force OSX to rebuild it with our new kext.

CODE

rm -rf Extensions.mkext

10. Repair permissions to your drive.

CODE

diskutil repairpermissions /

11. Reboot using the boot-flags -v -f
-v Verbose Mode displays useful information during the boot process.
-f Forces OSX to load kexts from the extensions folder instead of the cache file. We did delete the cache file so this is just a precaution.

6. Removing a kext
Open Finder to the /System/Library/Extensions folder and delete the kext in question. Then open terminal and type the following to remove the cache file:

Now reboot using the boot-flag -f to double insure OSX loads without the deleted kext.

Troubleshooting

1. Can't boot into OSX.
Try using one of the following boot-options
-v -f Verbose+Force OSX to load kexts directly from the extensions folder
-v -x Verbose+Safe Mode

2. Kernel got updated or overwritten - Boot using -v mach_kernel.backup to load your backup kernel

3. Ive got into OSX before and ive installed a kext and now none of the above options help. Provided you know the exact name of the kext you can boot into Single User Mode "command line" and manually remove it or install the old version from your backup folder. I wont get into detail just know its possible.

Its most likely you ARE ALREADY BOOTED and dont have a VIDEO scree,

Try this:
boot with -s
tyoe the following:

mount -uw /
cd /system/library/extensions
mv NVDA* ../
mv NVinject* ../

mv Natit* ../ (forgot this one)

exit

Hopefully you get a vga screen and can now work on getting correct video, lan and sound drivers.

If I were you I would pull the cover off and try to find a model number on your motherboard and one for your graphics card, this will really help out. Likewise infinitemac.com is another great site especially for AMD users. I frequent it more than here.

You may have better luck getting the onboard audio running first. (Looks like you have ALC850) I believe that most over SB cards will work but just to get you going. Onboard LAN should work with Forcedeth or nForceLAN.

Just let us know when you have a base system up and running and we can trouble shoot things one by one.

Thank you again i want to give it a try to install. But when i installed kalyway i couldn't get in to xp anymore. How can i fix the dual boot? I have 2 hard drives 1 of 80 GB and 1 of 320 GB xp is installed on the 80 GB.

Where is OSX installed? on the 80GB as well? There are ways to fix it so you can get into XP again but you need to post a little more information about how your drive is partitioned, what bootloader etc etc.

If you decide to reinstall:

I would leave XP in peace where it is and try to make space for OSx86 on the bigger hard drive. It's a lot simpler to dual boot this way.

Then, when you start your computer you just pick which drive to boot from by pressing F8 during POST.
Or you can set your OSx86 drive as default boot drive permanently in the BIOS.

If there's space enough left on your 350GB drive, you can use something like Partition Magic or GPartEd to move the existing data to the end of the drive and create a blank partition *at the beginning* of the drive. Partition Magic is kind of old but it'll do the job and it's easy to use. GPartEd scared the hell out of me, it's very powerful so be careful with it.
Like any surgical operation it can be a risky but if your disk surface is okay (run tests first to be sure) and you don't have a power outage during the process your data will be fine.

Don't format the partition, just leave it blank. When you boot up from the installation DVD you can use Apple Disk Utility to format it before installing.

The only downside to this method (using a drive that already has an existing NTFS partition on it with valuable data) is that you can't use GUID (AKA GPT), you have to use MBR. You'd have to reformat the whole drive from disk utility to use GPT.

Back again and with a surprise: A Kernel Panic. If i'm right it's because of the com.nvidia.driver.applenforceATA thingy.
How can i fix this? Reinstall? or just fix the kext without reinstall .
Please let me know if i'm right and if i'm not please tell me what it is then and how to fix it, i would be very happy .

If you have more than 2GB of RAM, try booting with maxmem=2048

Make sure S-ATA is set to AHCI in the BIOS.

Hi, i tried to set S-ATA to AHCI but i can't find it. I googled a bit and still cound't find anything.
And i have like 1,5GB ram, i still tried the maxmem=2048 for sure but didn't help .

Yeah if you have 1.5GB ram you dont need to try maxmem. Somewhere around 3.2GB or greater you may experience system freezes due to 32bit addressing in your ATA kext. Using maxmem would be a way to check and see if that was the root of your problem. maxmem=2048 will limit OSX to 2GB of Ram. There are also some community modified 64bit kexts that work pretty good. Just keep that in mind if you ever add more memory.

*Which options did you use for your chipset during install? You didnt install more than one nForce option did you?

No i only used 1 kext the one that you have in your signature. How can i fix it, reinstall and try another kext?

So you chose AppleNForceATA as an option during install or you downloaded the kext from my signature and installed it? We may be able to fix this without a complete reinstall.

You may want to choose all of the chipset options except for nForce and those that conflict. We could manually install them however it would probably take less time to just reinstall again. I don't have much experience with older nVidia chipsets so they may have a point.

Actually I would choose all the same options as last time with iDeneb just under chipsets choose everything except nForce & only choose one of the others if they are named the same. The chipset seems to be the issue.

the first few classes fell out so i installed ideneb in that time, but i get when i go into verbose mode -v it says still waiting for root device and when not in verbose mode -v i get the apple loading screen with a forbidden logo(see atachment). i installed all chipset drivers except applenforceATA, applenforceATA test and another one i can't remeber it. Maybe you can tell me exactly what i have to install in the chipset menu.

"Waiting for Root Device" happens when the OS doesn't recognize the motherboard Southbridge or other drive controller chipset - not surprising since you haven't installed any drivers for it!

I guess you can try playing with the BIOS settings for the drive controller and see if you can get it to boot.

If not, then the most important lesson to be learned from this is that none of the drivers you selected are usable on your system - at least as far as getting it to boot is concerned.

I don't know what else you can do now, I have 0 experience with boards with nForce chipsets.
