I'm about to build my first hackintosh, and the only component that I'm not so sure about is the graphics card. Most of the systems I see around just use one display, but I'm so used to dual displays that I would like to have it.

I'm not a gamer at all, so I dont need nothing too fancy. Just a graphics card with two DVI outs capable of drive two 24" displays

This is what I've choosed so far:

Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3 (motherboard)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (processor)
Transcend 2GB DDR-2 PC2-6400 (x 4) (memory)
Antec Sonata III with 500w power supply (Box)

Sata DVD-R
2 SATA HDD's

Works for me. Not sure about Dual-monitor. Probably will work.

I know the 8600GT, 8800GT/9800GT work, and the ATI 3870.

9600gso = 8800gs. search and you can find info about the 8800gs which is the same card, just a generation older. I'm using a 384mb 8800gs and it works great. If you're not a gamer though, there are better video card choices out there.

Gigabyte 9600 gt silent... silent, dual, dvi, under a $100 USD (even less with a mail in rebate) runs like a champ under 10.5.6 after adding the Mac Book Pro 9XXX series drivers (search the forum for aqua mac's package, its also included with iPC if you're using a distro) and the world's easiest efi string (on a ud3p). Did I mention silent?

From what I was able to see in Gigabyte website that card has just 1 DVI out (plus a D-sub, that i think is an analog out), and I'm searching for a board with two DVI outs, but thanks anyway.

I'm using it with dual DVI and two 19" 1280x1024 monitors. Should handle dual 24" monitors fine.

Also, it's the new "standard" video card in a real Mac, so it'll be very similar to a real mac experience. Use EFI strings in your com.apple.Boot.plist to get it working after installing at least the 10.5.2 update (I know it works after 10.5.4, but I think it may work starting at 10.5.2)

I have this card, I'm not speculating. 2 DVI-D ports, I promise. Put it this way, kind of hard to get hdmi out of d-sub, and I'm running dual hdmi 24"s off that card. Take a look at any e-tailer and you'll see what I mean.

The cheapest card I've found that definitely does dual DVI working in OSX, is the 8600GTS. (My eVGA 8600GT does NOT do dual DVI- the 2nd DVI only works with OSX with a VGA adapter.)

$47 after rebate from Newegg. Supply must be dwindling; this card was $30 after rebate just last week.

Also, the card is only $30 after rebates. Weird- newegg has the same card for two different prices.

Seems there is still an un-official thread open about 8600 GTS an no solution for installing correclty the card.

What driver / method did you used to get full support and dual dvi ?

I believe OSX ships with full support for this graphics card.

The thread you linked to is ancient. Remember, OSX has been updated many times since 2007, with support for a lot more and newer hardware.

Use EFI strings to enable the card- the correct EFI string enables the native hardware support in OSX. (Use a tool like EFIStudio, UInstaller, or OSx86 Tools). And again: YES the card works with dual DVI, as do most other higher-end cards that are supported in OSX. Most lesser cards than the 8600GTS don't work with dual DVI, including (in my experience) the 8600GT.

Too bad I hear that the fan on the evga 8600gts is very loud and connot be controlled in OSx!! So I am still looking for a cheap and silent card with dual display.

Why do you keep reading old/outdated information and then announcing inaccuracies as current fact?

The fan on the evga 8600GTS is controlled in OSX. Who ever you heard otherwise from doesn't know what they're talking about. The EFI strings must be used. No, the card isn't silent, -no card with a fan is- but the fan is controlled by the OS and goes into its quietest mode once the graphic drivers take over. Use whatever card you want, but don't post inaccuracies that makes finding valid information harder for others.

Having installed the evga card, i can confirm it works beautifully in dual mode! Loud is minimal, it really doesn't botter me.



However I now get kernel panic from time to time, which I never had before installing the card. Any idea how to avoid this ?

Hmm... I haven't heard of a video card specifically causing a KP. Did you set up the card with EFI strings? Are you using the card with or without the 6-pin power connector? Is there enough airflow in your case? (Any card could possibly overheat without enough air).

Are you using any IDE drives with your setup? (Those I know can cause random KPs on Gigabyte hardware).

Yep the good old IDE hd.. could be the problem here! I will re-setup the system on my SATA drive and see.
