Can i ask why in the prep guide you create 4 new partitions? There is no explanation.

1- osx main
2- for backup/test
3- for download/data
4- for windows's data/downloads...

Some of you have been asking about the brightness control, so this is what I currently know about it and how it works on my NC10.
Basically I have followed the instructions found from this web site:
http://ipis-osx.wikidot.com/forum/t-103217...nd-instructionsBecause the instructions are for Asus netbook, those are only partly working with Samsung NC10.
But by following the steps you are able to adjust backlight brightness in Terminal and once you set it for a desired level it's saved and valid after sleep/wakeup and even if you reboot your Sammy.
Of course it would be nice to have the key mapping working as well, and it should be even possible cause it's working with Asus, but at least this is a best work around so far.
So if you want to adjust your screen brightness, follow the instructions from the link above.
I bet that in some point we get the key mapping working as well and after that we have a fully working OS X in our hands (of course assuming that Mysticus gets the sound devices working, which I believe to be happening quite soon...)

EDIT:
I forgot to mention that for my Sammy PCI device is 16 and with the following command I'm getting a quite nice brightness level (at least for my eyes):
sudo reggie_se -D PCI -i 16 -w 130 -a 0xF4 -B 32
Where value 130 is the actual value of the brightness level. It can be set anything between 1 and 255, but I advice not to set it too low cause then your screen will go totally blank.

Is there any chance you could give me an idea of the bare minimum in terms of disk space and partitions? Could i just make one partition for OSX, or is there need for them besides making backups?

Ive just hit an issue while preparing the files. Im trying to unzip "Combo_Update_Patches.1.2.0.zip" and it is asking me for a password.
Any help?
Nermind, i took the plunge and just installed OSX. Unzipping in OSX worked just fine.
I just hope the boot loader is working ok because a lot of the process differed from the guide and on reboot my nc10 just went straight into OSX.

Just another reminder for anyone considering updating to 10.5.6 with today's release from Apple, DO NOT DO IT! There have been substantial changes made to the OS in this update and you should wait until Mysticus has released a tested update to his packages.

I Just used that 10.5.5 combo, now OSX shows the apple logo and hangs...... And yes i did it all in the right order... any advice? Or do i need to start over? I ran the all in 1 installer with the nc10 drivers and the post patch DMOS checker thingo too.
The guide just became useless at that point though, as what was in the installers from your site (biketown) wasnt what the guide showed. The guide on post #1 differs drastically from reality, can someone who isnt busy edit it?

jpuk: guide is not so different... some parts differ due to the fact that i was able to make an nc10 dvd after all

so people dont complain about usb kb issues, and didnt stop there and made some driver packages, and upgrade dvd which took sometime, and now working on audio drivers.... also busy with private life as well... currently things are ok and usable and i m trying to make it better... once i make out the kings, i will edit the update guide, and post#1...
however your complain about the update is because u didnt read the guide carefully! check page 54 in the guide and see the bios settings and match them in your bios!!! exactly it shows, and you will boot just fine... and stop posting every couple hours, just read through the topics pls...
running with scissors: i didnt check the pcefi 9 version yet, but it is on my list and i collected some knowledge and will do it probably in the weekend... but real problem with bootloaders is that you cant apply bootloader to a running partition! considering majority of noobs around, i will make the package proparly and not rushed, otherwise many noobs will brick their os partitions and/or entire system... so i need to be carefull...
about the update 10.5.6 just wait a bit please, you are not gonna die if you dont do it today or tomorrow... in fact you are not gonna die at all if you dont do it at all...

Mysticus, thats why i specifically asked someone else to edit the guide. I dont expect you to be working on both.
Also, the BIOS settings are identical to mine. Ive done everything that was in the guide and site, including checksums on files. The issue only cropped up post combo update, i assumed it was an issue the "post update" installer not working right. If you can be more specific about a possible issue with my BIOS that would be nice, but i appreciate that youre busy.

did you check bios settings and they are exactly the same? can you show a screen cap to confirm?

Ive installed the nc10 patched Jas ISO (NC10 DVD, as you say).
It booted up fine, ive got all the update files on the OSX desktop BUT then the guide stops being relevant because it seems the process after this is different? So i ran the PRE update patch, then ran the official update (DIDNT restart, just minimised) Then used the all in one to run the patch for after the update.
This is where it all went wrong because after thereboot it just loaded to the apple logo and no further.
If you can quickly explain how to install the official 10.5.5 combo, and the newest relevant patches, I would appreciate it.
I dont want to piss you off, its just i read through your guide twice and decided to give it a try, only to find all the installers have changed.

all you needed to do was, install official update, finished? minimize, and run nc10 update package, choose nc10 and update fix before restart... thats it... alternatively for future, wen you first installed the dvd, use the dvd upgrade patch and files to upgrade your current iso! so you will have 10.5.5 otb no need to update or wait for my next project 10.5.6 dvd upgrade...

JPUK - I had the same problem as you did with the install but came to the realization that I did not follow the instructions carefully. The first thing i would check is go into your BIOS and check that the EDB setting is enabled. This solved the boot problem for me. Lots of people are having this issue and it is more of a fact that people including myself weren't following the instructions even though we swore we had. Most just breezed through the bios settings without really making sure everything is correct. Anyways, hope this will solve your problem as it solved mine. Mysticus is doing great work for this group, I do realize that this topic has gotten quite long and will take time to read through everything, but most common questions have been answered by Mysticus and sometimes answered many many times. And if this does not solve your problem, I hope that others will be able to provide more help then.
And just a quick note, do not rush to update to 10.5.6. There may be many more problems that will need to be solved before it is safe.

wen i have time today, i will try to renew the update package for 10.5.6
the reason why people loose drivers is because we are using modified drivers, when you do official update, it replaces the original drivers
one more thing, some of you may know but majority dont, that in update package there is "update fix before restart" which replaces the "1" script at restart, i guess no one is doing it, so you have a chance to brick some other things...

but anyways... this update is not something for emergency, so no need to rush...

I decided to take the plunge and install the 10.5.6 update (

The downside is that, as a few people have touched on so far, PS2 is broken. I have tried both

I've written a little script to interface "reggie_se" which in turn is used to set display brightness. I'm running a retail install on my NC10 so I had to look a bit deeper into the method posted by RealRooster.
I managed to successfully patch my AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer executable by using the instructions from:
http://ipis-osx.wikidot.com/forum/t-91753/brightness-control "Hagglebeef" has the right instructions on how to patch the file.
After patching the file, OS X is no longer in command over the LCD brightness. Now by using the reggie_se utitily you can set a register of the Intel GMA950 chip called Legacy Backlight Control. It accepts a value from 0-255 (1byte) where 0 is darkest and 255 the brightest setting.
I wrote the script because I wanted a fairly convenient way of setting and increasing/decreasing the brightness.
The command syntax is:
CODE
change-brightness.sh - change LCD display brightness, (c) Timo Kosig 2008
usage: change-brightness.sh operation [number]
operation: get -- return current display brightness
set -- set new display brightness
number: either absolute, 0 (darkest) - 255 (brightest)
or relative expressed as +- value, e.g. - 15 or + 20
Please feel free to download & try.
PS: There might be still a few bugs in there but since it is harmless nothing should upset your mac.

Hey Mysticus, great work on the nc10 osx patches so far, you seem to have put a lot of time and effort in.
I've been attempting to install osx on my nc10 without a USB DVD-ROM, I came across a handy utility elsewhere on the forums called ddmac.exe (leopard hd install helper). Unfortunately JaS.OSx86.10.5.4.Client.Server.Intel.SSE2.SSE3.iso is over 4GB, I think this is causing ddmac to bluescreen my nc10 and i cannot install using this method. Is there a version of osx86 that is less than 4gig that will work with your nc10 patches? Have you (or anyone) used ddmac succesfully with this iso?
Thanks for any help,

there shouldn't be a problem with the size of the file esp in windows as ntfs should be able to handle the 4gb+ file size.
if you find that ddmac keeps crashing etc, then what i found is while it is installing leave it alone completely until it changes itself, i know its so tempting to click on it as it looks like it freezes but just leave it to do its magic and it'll work.

Thanks for the reply Mr_CP, the reason I suspected the 4GB filesize might be the culprit is because I was following some instructions that said i should format the install partition with FAT32, but I see other people have successfully completed installs with ddmac and this particular iso, so I must be making some other mistake. Also I managed to resist clicking away at ddmac, it bluescreens all by itself, I swear!

I'll try playing with some other settings to see if i can get this working.

The install partition where the DDMAC ISO resides must be NTFS. The Fat32 partition is causing the problem -- it does not handle 4+ GB files properly.

Hey guys,
after updating to 10.5.6 I found out that the brightness is changing wether it's on battery or on cable.
If you start your NC10 with powercable or just wake up from sleep, you have the normal brightness.
But if you start with battery or wake up, the brightness is reduced just like on real macbooks in energysaving-mode.
Well, you can't adjust brightness and the brightness doesn't change if the NC10 is working and for e.g. you plug it on power, but it's cool that the brightness is changing anyway.
Maybe the we can adjust brightness one day by the functionkeys...

I too have updated to 10.5.6 with no problems, doing as Mysticus C* suggested, install update, re-install NC10 drivers.
Sound out thru speakers works fine, no new/other inputs or outputs are shown. I've not tried the patch yet.
Brightness of the screen does as posted above, if the power is removed during sleep, the screen is at half brightness when awakening.

thanks for any help.

Hi Mysticus, I've just tried to go upto 10.5.6 and now get a Chain Booting Error on selection of OSX in boot menu
Is there any way to recover from this?

I decided to take the plunge and install the 10.5.6 update (stop sniggering, you there at the back!) and predictably it wasn't quite plain sailing:
Wifi still works, Graphics is now no longer set to full brightness (which is an improvement), a customised SystemConfiguration is no longer needed for battery information to appear (hurrah!).
The downside is that, as a few people have touched on so far, PS2 is broken. I have tried both ApplePS2Controller.kext and AppleACPIPS2Nub.kext, and neither load correctly.
Fixed it... whilst 10.5.5 is happy with AppleACPIPS2Nub or ApplePS2Controller, 10.5.6 requires both kexts to be active at the same time - with both loaded, everything is fine!
Additionally, 10.5.6 no longer seems to require a custom SystemConfiguration bundle in order to access battery information so it is now possible to run OSX with custom kexts loaded from an EFI partition without changing anything from the installation on the main partition.

I've written a little script to interface "reggie_se" which in turn is used to set display brightness. I'm running a retail install on my NC10 so I had to look a bit deeper into the method posted by RealRooster.
Please feel free to download & try.
Hmm - when I run this on 10.5.6, reggie_se returns "ERROR: no target device specified". Running 'sudo reggie_se -D PCI -i 16 -r -a 0xF4 -B 8' results in the same error.
(This may be because I've disabled the on-board LAN adapter in the BIOS, which may be shuffling PCI devices around... might this affect the value '16'? How was this value originally determined?

Stuart, you're right. Disabling your on-board would probably change the order of device numbers.
In order to find out your right device number run:
CODE
sudo reggie_se -D PentiumM -x
Which will give your the following output:
CODE
. 4.6.1 (227)
PCI Devices
0. Host PCI bridge: AppleACPIPCI (0:0:0:0)
1. VGA-compatible controller: GFX0 (0:0:2:0)
2. Multimedia device: HDEF (0:0:27:0)
3. PCI-PCI bridge: RP01 (0:0:28:0)
4. Network controller: PXS1 (0:2:0:0)
5. PCI-PCI bridge: RP03 (0:0:28:2)
6. Ethernet controller: PXS3 (0:3:0:0)
7. USB UHCI controller: USB1 (0:0:29:0)
8. USB UHCI controller: USB2 (0:0:29:1)
9. USB UHCI controller: USB3 (0:0:29:2)
10. USB UHCI controller: USB4 (0:0:29:3)
11. USB2 EHCI controller: USB7 (0:0:29:7)
12. PCI-PCI bridge: PCIB (0:0:30:0)
13. PCI-ISA bridge: LPCB (0:0:31:0)
14. IDE controller: SATA (0:0:31:2)
15. SMBus controller: SBUS (0:0:31:3)
16. Display controller: display (0:0:2:1)
17. Host PCI bridge: pci8086,27ac (0:0:0:0)
You are looking for the number of "Display controller: display". Change the device number in the script to this number and it should work.

Thanks for the script, good work indeed.
I made two additional scripts in order to use your script for increasing (set + 25) and decreasing (set -25) the brightness level and assigned those to the arrow keys by using Quicksilver application's triggering method. Now I can adjust the brightness by keyboard shortcuts and it works like a charm.
Of course the brightness level adjustment is not showed on the HUD as it is with the volume control, but this is good enough for me (at least in this point).

Brilliant. Mind sharing them, and how you tied them to Quicksilver? That'll do me fine for now!

Good thinking! That's actually exactly what I did. Almost like the real deal except for the display of the current brightness level.
Could people who updated to 10.5.6 please share which version of AppleIntelGMA950.kext & AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext they're using?
The update brough version 1.5.36.25 and my old 10.5.5 drivers are 1.5.30 if I remember right. My NC10 doesn't want to wake up from sleep anymore and when clicking on the "Graphics" tab in System Profiler my NC10 crashes and I have to hold the power button to shut it down.
When I tried the new drivers it wouldn't load because of the missing device ID. I patched the drivers but I would get stuck on the blue screen (no cursor & no login window). Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks to Stuart's finding I have the keyboard & touchpad working.
There is also something that is slightly annoying me: 1 out of 3 boots the system would stop booting waiting for the boot media. I think it's related to AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext. Has anyone else ever had this issue?
I'm on a retail install using an EFI partition with efi_boot 6.1

timo: it is a framebuffer issue

i did same things as you did, system in blue screen and stucks there though i know the system responds! because it shutdowns and keyboard works etc...it just doesnt bring the desktop...
if you use the framebuffer from my packages, you can use evertyhing just fine... but you will need to patch out the brightness issue again

can be slightly trouble finding the 55 in the right place

u ll need haglebeef's longer method but still

trouble...
i m testing the 10.5.6 gma kext patched (binary and plist)+ fb from my packages (note that it is not my fb patch at all, i grabbed it from somewhere else... people dont give credit so i dunno who made it originaly, but guess maybe dense?)
==============================
UPDATE NEWS:
==============================
some help arrived from voodoo teams. They made working port of bsd drivers which works with 99% of current hda's in the market (claimed) and in current state: internal speaker working, headphone working, internal mic/line in is coded but disabled at the moment... I m invited to test drive, so will report back... As claimed within few weeks it will be equal to applehda driver

also asked dense if he can provide me the natit for the fb issue not spitting display out put (probably because of the display panel registy (i dont know the details but guessing it has to do with edid data that provides the display information) this issue is probably due to fb driver reading the edid data from display directly or feed by the efi issue? as in older fb driver in my package, i think it reads it directly from display, and probably changed to get it or fed by efi?

delete your ddmac partition? and reapply it if you had ddmac earlier... update should not cause that kind of error though...
