Hi Mysticus...

I'm not an expert, but if you need to make me do some stupid tasks, just feel free to do it.

thanx for the offer, but i need people who understand what he is doing, testing is the easiest part... trying to figure out the kinks at the moment is the priority for me, so someone with knowledge is better...

Wow, this is an awesome project and a great thread. I read the first twelve pages, then decided to skip to the end and ask if anyone is willing to give me an overview and a little advice. Let me start from the beginning.

I recently bought my first netbook, an Eee PC 1000H. Eventually, I want to install Mac OS X on it, but I'm really low on time and money right now. Most of my money is going towards a second netbook, a going away present for a friend. I only have about ten days to get it ready for her, and I have to make all the right choices and decisions.

I was leaning towards the Samsung NC10, but I wasn't sure how easy it is to install Mac OS X on it. Then I registered for the InsanelyMac forums and someone pointed me to this thread. Unfortunately, I'm not much of a geek. I've been designing websites for years and bought a MacBook Pro a couple years ago. But some of the things discussed on this thread are a little confusing for me, even if it is "noob friendly."

So let me post my questions.

1. What will I need to buy? It sounds like I do NOT need an external DVD drive, right? I can download things onto my MacBook Pro, copy them to my external hard drive, then plug my external hard drive into my Samsung. Will that work? Do I need to buy that Dell 1490 WiFi card in order to make WiFi work? Are there any other expenses I should be aware of?

2. With my Eee, I can connect to the Internet via Verizon while at work, though I can connect with WiFi via local services when I'm at home. Would I have the same options with a Hackintosh Samsung? In other words, should I be able to use either Verizon or WiFi to connect to the Internet? (Sorry, I'm pretty new to all this WiFi stuff, and I've only had Verizon for a few weeks.)

3. Japanese Fonts - My friend is studying Japanese, and I want to set up her "Mac" so that she can toggle back and forth between English and Japanese. Will this work on a Hackintosh/Samsung NC10?

4. Apple Wireless Keyboard - I would also like to give my friend an Apple wireless keyboard. Does anyone know if these keyboards work with a Hackintosh Samsung? I believe the keyboards require Bluetooth, and it sounds like Bluetooth is either included in the Samsung by default or its included in the downloads Mysticus created, right?

5. Hiring someone - Can anyone offer any advice on hiring someone to help me through this process? I don't want to insult your "noob friendly" guide. I can see by the comments that it's very good. But I'm an amateur, and I can't afford to make any mistakes that might somehow damage my computer. I only have a few days to get this right.

I live in Seattle, so there should be plenty of local geeks who could help me. Maybe I could place an ad on CraigsList or something like that - "Need someone to help me install Mac OS X on Samsung NC10." I could probably only afford to pay them $50.

6. User Friendly? Are hackintoshes only for experienced computer users, or will they work for novices? Will my friend (who's a novice) need lots of special instructions for nurturing her Hackintosh Samsung, or will it work pretty much like a Mac?

I don't care about audio components; she's deaf. The most important thing is that she can use her netbook to type in English and Japanese in the classroom and can also connect to the Internet.

* * * * *

Sorry to throw so many questions at you. I just need some guidance. I'm hoping to make a final decision and purchase a netbook (hopefully the Samsung NC10) through Amazon.com today or tomorrow. Ideally, I'd like to make a dual or even triple boot system, with Mac OS X, Windows XP and Ubuntu. I wish I could afford a bigger hard drive, though that may not really be necessary.

Thanks for all your hard work and inspiration, Mysticus, and thanks for all the comments and suggestions posted by everyone else.

EDIT

booted into safe mode with -s, made the fix detailed here http://osx86.wikidot.com/known-issues
looks to have solved it! thanks!

Well guy,

I'm from germany and I had the same problem, too. The only fix was the same way you've solved the problem:

/sbin/mount -uw /
passwd root <- Type any password you want
touch /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
reboot

Well, I don't know why this is happening almost only on german NC10's but as I found out, there are some more differences between the english and the german installations.
You will find out that if you've installed a complete german language package, you won't be able to start the keyboard prefpane. Also you can't change the task-bar into translucent-mode if you're working on a german leopard. Only after you've changed the language into e.g. english, you will be able to change these settings.
The tanslucent-issue occures on real macs, too - that's a stupid issue of leopard and I don't know why this is fixed as we are already on version 10.5.5. That shows that even apple is not perfect :-)

Well, all I can say now is keep on going. Because of Mysticus, leopard is running more than extremely fine on the NC10. And if there working more guys like him on this project, it's getting better and better every single day.

Ive restarted now and am trying to complete the setup assistant, but it keeps looping!

This is a known issue, and occurs if the Mac OS Setup Assistant can't find any network interface... as will be the case on a stock NC10, as neither the integrated LAN nor the MiniPCIe wireless LAN chipsets are supported.

You can skip the setup assistant from the Terminal of the install DVD, but that does leave the system in a non-fully configured state.

The best solution is probably to give MacOS a network interface it can see - either swap-out the default Wifi card for a Dell Truemobile card (avoid the 802.11n ones - these aren't yet well supported) or use a supported USB ethernet adapter (such as Apple sells for the MacBook Air). It doesn't have to be connected to a network, only present. In either of these cases, setup will then proceed as expected and properly configure the user and root accounts.

No News sad.gif

currently stuck at the moment... i managed to make system show the devices, but headphone doesnt work still, and external mic somewhat working, it responds but amplifying is very weak, and there is some sort of parasite in the noise... not too clear...

so i dont know what i m overlooking or anything done wrong...

and none seems to be helping...

and those guys who made those patching topic and get their sound work because of using built in codecs in the driver (what it means is that those guys are already using supported codecs by the driver, so obviously their codecs are working...) and when asked question, none of them answering, this is the most annoying part, they either dont know really what they are doing (because they got all the hints and kinks from other resources...) or they just simply ignoring to answer questions... anyways...

hopefully we will get past this as well...

if anyone joined the msiwind forums, ask them to come to this topic and maybe we can join forces with some more knowledgeable guys...

else it seems a bit unfortunate for me to finish it all by myself at the moment...
cmascatello
The 1505 Dell WiFi card works well and is supported natively by OSX. I have used this mini PCI-E card in 3 netbooks with OSX486 and there have been no issues. The 1510 is a half-height card and does not work as nicely with the NC10 b/c there is no screwdown available.

Hi Myst, Hi all.

I posted an Help request on MSI forum.

Hope someone'll reply

Anyway, keep on try harder !!!!

Just wanted to make a follow-up post here with a little list of tips which helped me get everything installed. I'm now triple-booting Ubuntu 8.10, Mac OX 10.5.5, and WinXP using a combination of GRUB and the Darwin bootloader, thanks to Mysticus' great driver packs and guide.
  • Whilst partitioning my drive with gparted in linux i hosed my windows install, so to get it installed again i used multiboot_10.cmd, which i can highly recommend for other NC10 users to create a USB stick version of the Samsung Windows recovery disc. Find it here http://www.msfn.org/board/How-to-install-X...6.html&st=6 . Just remember that if you are creating it on a Vista machine, as I did, you need to turn off UAC (User Account Control) to get it to work!
  • When I used ddmac to copy the JaS/Mysticus ISO to the FAT32 partition I had created to function as my "install" partition, I was getting a "chain booting error" from CHAIN0 or alternatively a "HFS partition not found" error from the tboot loader. To fix this i used the fdisk utility from my Ubuntu Live USB stick - I simply needed to change the ID of the partition to "af" - then the install continued normally. I'd like to note that this worked with my drive partitioned as follows:

    1. WinXP, NTFS, primary
    2. extended, with:
    • linux swap, ext2
    • linux main, ext3
    3. MacOS install, hfs+, primary
    4. MacOS main, hfs+, primary
  • As mentioned by the posters above, I had to boot into single mode to apply the fix to skip the looping setup assistant. I am on a German NC10 and this seems to be a common problem with them.
  • For my multiboot setup, GRUB is installed to the main linux partition. Upon boot, I can choose either "Ubuntu" or "Windows/Mac OS". If I choose the latter, the Windows boot.ini kicks in, and I can choose either "Windows" or "Mac OS". If I choose Mac OS, the Darwin bootloader comes up and from there I can choose my main Mac partition. 3 separate menus is not ideal, I know, but its OK for me.
Big thanks to Mysticus again. So glad to see it finally running smile.gif

I seem to have a problem nobody else reported yet sad.gif

I did the following:
* replaced the network card with Dell 1490
* patched the DVD into 10.5.4 using ppf
* deleted the D: drive partition as originally installed
* created a 75 GB partition and named it OS X
* made a 4.7 GB secondary partition, put a logical drive on it and named it install
* used ddmac to put the iso on the logical drive
* installed Mac OS X
(I have the ddmac menu that displays a choice of Windows and Mac OS; the only added bit is that when I select Mac OS I need to hit F8 and choose the OS X drive. This is barely any hassle so once sleep works I probably won't be arsed to repair that :$)
* ran 10.5.5 combo update
* ran the Stage 3 update plus drivers as listed on Bike Town
* aaaand... everything works perfect (Mysticus C* you are brilliant) except for one tiny thing... when I put the computer to sleep using Fn+Esc or the shutdown/restart/sleep menu it falls asleep immediately, but never wakes up again -- when I press the power button again, the wireless diode comes back to life, hdd diode lights up for a sec then goes out, and that's it. The screen remains black and there is no more activity until I restart the thing...

I tried reinstalling about 10 times, managed to get more interesting problems tongue.gif but never solved the sleep issue. I disabled hyperthreading in BIOS, didn't bother with the drives as I wasn't using USB DVD...

Any hints? My NC10 was bought in the Netherlands, I installed OS X in English though. Thanks in advance for any help!

navaira: check your bios setting as explained in the pdf guide page 54 and also check your acpi setting to make sure it is s3 sleep mode...
Navaira
Mysticus C*:

1) from the pdf I understood there were two settings to be changed -- the startup/usb drive and hyperthreading; have I missed something? Is there anything else to change?
2) how do I check the acpi setting? I checked all options in the BIOS but can't see anything like that, also System Preferences doesn't have it; google didn't help either...

PS. Thank you very much for helping... I am amazed at your patience and the amount of work you put into this -- how do you find time?! smile.gif
PS2. Just made a tiny lil' donation smile.gif

acpi option is not shown so it means it is already set to s3 by default

check for these settings in bios under advanced title:

hyperthreading: Enabled
processor power management: Enabled
legacy usb: Enabled
large disk access mode: DOS

EDB: Enabled (this is one of the most important one)
Internal LAN: Enabled
Touchpad: Enabled
CPU Power Saving: Enabled

Can you confirm all the settings are set as shown above?

Thanx for the PS2 smile.gif

bear in mind that
sleep currently work in battery mode, if power adapter is attached, sleep works for one sec, usb ports cause wake event... ok? this is a pm issue... we need to find out...

also, read my updgrade dvd guide, so that you can upgrade your current dvd iso to 10.5.5 as well... that means u wont need to update it if you were to install it again... smile.gif

Oh, I don't mind that. I tend to either be using the laptop and then have it plugged or to put it to sleep and then not have it plugged...

I am though quite curious what will happen if I put it to sleep and then connect the power source -- must investigate that. But only out of sheer curiosity -- as far as I am concerned NC10 has just replaced my very old ibook g4 by working exactly like the g4, only faster smile.gif

I've been running the MSIwindOSX86.iso for several weeks on my NC10 with only a few annoyances. I've read through this entire thread, have downloaded all of the installation support files (just waiting for the JAS ISO to complete). In preparation for installation I have a few questions that I hope you can help me with.

Current config: US NC-10 (white), 2GB, Dell 1500, bluetooth mouse
Disk config: disk0s1=Samsung recovery (6GB FAT), disk0s2=XP (60GB NTFS), disk0s3=OS X (83GB). External DVD, external drive for Time Machine and media/movie storage

Annoyances: USB only available if USB was in use at boot, bluetooth mouse connects but cannot pair, Option and Cmd key mapping, headphone audio (would be nice to have for in-flight entertainment), external display support mirror or dual (would be nice to have)

Q1: will the solution discussed in this thread address all of the annoyances listed above (except the nice-to-haves)?

Q2: for partition cloning, would an external drive suffice?
I'm currently using Time Machine to one external drive.
I currently run OS X almost exclusively, including corporate VPN, etc.
It'd be nice to keep my current OS X partition size.
I could go to 2x40GB partitions if needed.

Thanks for your efforts... I look forward to having a cleaner, sleeker, OS X install.

bluetooth mouse connects but cannot pair [DON'T KNOW]
Option and Cmd key mapping [WORKS WITH A FIX(?)]
headphone audio (would be nice to have for in-flight entertainment) [DON'T WORK]
external display support mirror or dual (would be nice to have) [WORKS]

I have been playing around with the screen brightness and I have some info to share.
With the modified kext files I'm now able to change screen brightness with terminal commands; meaning that we don't have to use ScreenShade or any similar software to dim our screens anymore.

Something I would like to know and hope that someone here could give me an answer is that where we define Fn + key button mapping. Like for volume adjustment the key mapping (Fn+ left/right arrow) is already working, where this is defined? Idea is that screen brightness could be changed by pressing Fn + Up/Down arrow. wink.gif

usb will work just fine no worries about it
bluetooth issue is something out of my scope since i dont have any bluetooth mouse/kb to test to see what is going on... if you are planning on sending me one you re welcome to do, so i can tell u smile.gif
bluetooth audio pairing would require bluetooth audio transmitter or bluetooth sound card...
you can keep your current partition size, but you can also split the osx partition into two pieces one should be 4.4 gb (for ddmac hdd installation of iso smile.gif --i dont have the guide made for it yet, but there are links posted before you can read through)

if it can work with terminal, it is possible to make scripts and assigning shortcut keys for it, but i need to search a bit for keymapping for those function keys, it may be easy or difficult depending on which file or program they are defined inside...

Anyone comfy doing a tutorial for installing from the HDD? Nevermind, I missed the link in #423.

Also, there is a serious lack of seeding for the ISO. Im really eager to test this but the ETA is days if not weeks!

You might be quicker grabbing the JAS ISO, installing that then patching upwards. That's what I did and everything's been sweet.

I'll be ordering a white NC10 on Tuesday. This thread is partly why I've chosen the NC10 over other netbooks.

Here's to hoping we've got a fully working NC10osx86.iso before too long!

One little stupid question:

I found out that my wireless-card is extremely slow and I'm not sure if the card is installed correctly.

When I installed the card, there were two arrows printed next to the antenna-connectors. One arrow was white an the other black. I connected the white cable to the black arrowed connector and the black cable to the white arrow....

I did it that way because the old card was connected in the same way.

Is the card installed correctly that way or do i have to connect the black cable to the black connector?

I've given it a try - and with the new AppleHDA.kext from your package in my EFI partition's Extensions directory (from where the Azalia kext runs successfully), I have no sound devices detected at all sad.gif

dmesg reports:

CODE
AppleHDA.kext failed to load: unable to locate 'layout-id' property.

(For some reason, the file Resources/layout46.xml is thought to be binary by both 'grep' and 'file', whereas the other files in the same location are detected as text - although I can't see any embedded control-characters, and this may be entirely spurious)

did you use the installer or did you extract the file? and did it manually?

if you used installer, it should have worked
if you did it manually,

1) u need to delete the caches/com* and extensions.mkext --- this step is a must otherwise it doesnt work!
2) u also need to remove azalia audio driver

also are you using boot-132/custom extensions folder?
also are you using ncq10 dvd or your own version?

also this is an old driver patch
new driver patch is on the works...will test it out soon... it may or may not work i dont know yet...

Yeah, I extracted the kext to my EFI partition manually - but I did ensure that the caches were cleared and the Azalia driver was removed. I'll try to check today whether some dependancy was missing - but the error message does suggest that there's something wrong with the kext's plist files rather than anything else... have you yourself tested the packaged version you uploaded, just in case some gremlin crept in during packaging?

Thanks,

thats the point now - the old card had no marks.
But the new card has 1 coloured arrow on each connector. And if I'd connect the cables fitting to the colors of the marks, it would be vice versa to the original atheros card.

Now, almost everybody here has a dell card. How did you connect the antenna-cables?

thats the point now - the old card had no marks.
But the new card has 1 coloured arrow on each connector. And if I'd connect the cables fitting to the colors of the marks, it would be vice versa to the original atheros card.

Now, almost everybody here has a dell card. How did you connect the antenna-cables?

I connected my 1390 by putting the cables back in the same position they are on the picture, not trying to match up any markings or colours on the card, and seems to be fine so far.

srcshelton: i tested it of course, it works...

1) did you remove both /S/L/Extensions.mkext and /S/L/E/Caches/com*?
2) are you using boot-132/custom extensions folder?
3) also are you using ncq10 dvd or your own choice version?
4) why are you doing manual installation? (will be probably answered by 2or3)

adamcarter: no it is not ralink... it is atheros ar5007 and there is a somewhat troublesome method to get it working here but make sure you understand that it will have many troubles...

g4-flo: check the names of those connectors, one should say main, other aux...

Hi there,

I am not able to install Mac Os X on my NC10 after using your guide.

Partition and Installation works fine, also dualbooting it. But then the OS X shows me the registration dialogues. After selection of language and keyboard language I come to page where it ask me if I want to transfer anything from my old mac. If I select "Nothing to transfer" and press "continue" nothing happens and then after 2 minutes the computer jumps back to the "Select Language Screen".

I tried it both with Jas 10.5.4 DVD as well as MSIWindosX. Same situation. With MSIWindosX it jumps back to the opening animation with the starfield.

Has anybody had similar problems? What is the solution to this?

Things that might help:
- I followed the fantastic guide from bike town step by step (I even doublechecked the selection for the installation)
- I upgraded the machine to 2 GB ram (Could that prevent the system from installing.)
- No WiFi Card installed.
- Hyperthreading is enabled in BIOS
- With Jas 10.5.4 it seems that I have got a newer version than you used in the guide. It already showed the new keyboards when I did not connect the USB keyboard right away.
What is the exact name of your Jas Distribution used so that I can try to find it.

Many many thanks for your help.

There is no native method of 2-finger scrolling, even with a Synaptics trackpad. You may be bale to get it going with the ALPS driver and FFScroll (google these items).
