Yeah! Great job! I thank you in advance cos i'll buy this netbook in 2009...

Any clue about how to slipstream this into an osx distribution to make something like "samsungnc10osx.iso" ? Wouldn't it be great?

it can be great of course, i will ask Jas if he can add the NC10 packages into his dvd, or maybe other teams who make the MSWindOSX smile.gif and make the distro as NetbookOSX smile.gif rather than limiting the process...
=====================================

Guys, I am preparing the visual guide as PDF format, is everyone OK with that?

Because of the visuals (screen caps of every stage) makes this a bit hard to put it on a website for bandwidth reasons in general.

I would be fine with that. A online guide would be better but I understand the bandwidth reasons!
Hope its going well.
I am half way through trying the install (downloading the official dmg now)

simply amazing job mate, on the hdd front i realised that for some silly reason ebuyer had the same hdd but for cheaper on another link, http://www.ebuyer.com/product/146083 thats the one i've ordered for my nc10 so should hopefully come this week and the laptop will be fully done. and speaking of the power drain that the other member mentioned earlier barring marketing spool "this drive delivers 5400 RPM-equivalent power consumption in a 7200 RPM drive." hopefully the battery will still be awesome after
 Mysticus C*
About 80% completed. At the same time, installing the (JAS version) OSX, and going to test the packages one last time. For double checking.... After that, guide will be completed. Max 1 hour...

Havig PDF format guide will help me keep the space clean in the first post, so I can concentrate on update information and necessary notices.
ricpersi
thanks for the informations regarding the broadcom chip Mysticus C* and thanks again for your efforts.. I'm looking forward to get and see your guide..

Overall progress: 90% finished...

Installation finished, doing the update, and going to test the package, and finish the guide with the remaining update section.

Almost done guys, hang on there smile.gif
=================================
Bumped into a wall... smile.gif know what the problem is, will fix it and test the package again, one typo error i made...
=================================
Problem solved, will fix the package part where the typo error exists.
=================================
+ System started fine,
+ Update worked (after my typo error fixed)
+ Gfx fine
+ Sound fine
+ Time machine worked
+ USB mounting fine
+ Going to test sound switching with chud installed
+ Wifi working fine
+ Sleep working on battery but not on power connected as expected (it is caused by bluetooth but dont know why really)
=================================

Ok booting and grabbing pics once again, and will wrap up the update guide... (hopefully 30 mins?)

Just one quick question...

Is this noisy? I mean, in the Acer Aspire One, the fan can't be controlled through bios settings and it's always on in OSX. What happens with the NC10?
adamcarter
wait so you cant put this baby to sleep with the power cord cause of bluetooth. Is this innate with the machine or something that could be fixed driver wise down the line. PS get some sleep....you did a great service You deserve some R&R

fan is running like whispering although it is at a bit high rpm (to be honest, i dont see any difference from running in windows and osx, maybe fan is controlled seperately? by a hardware sensor, rather than software, i may be wrong)... but my ears are not that good anyway to hear that much noise...

adam: I think i will sleep really, guide is pretty much done, it is just putting slideshow (file/pic ordering) taking a long time.... Everything is working great at the moment apart from couple of kinks smile.gif

sleep works fine with battery only but not power connected, as i said bluetooth problem (bluetooth is connected to an internal usb port, for somereason, when power connected it keeps signaling, and triggering wake event, from what i see through system logs... i just dont know why... will finger that one a bit to figure out with some modded usb drivers... smile.gif )

another kink is that as i said before, after sleep, "right arrow" key is software pressed (somehow osx is getting it as pressed, like when you hold a key for too long time in windows, it would beep) so just press right arrow key once, it is fixed... smile.gif

With added sound switcher for speaker/hp (you need to install chud package first) and adding also brightness control mentioned by homy, there will be only two issues on this laptop
+ Lan (no driver yet!) and Mic (sound drivers need to be fixed for this, i dont know if taruga would take a look at this... I m sure it will be touched sometime later so full sound will be possible)

Sorry guys, guide will wait for tomorrow, I dont like to put things unfinished and non-working... I know many of you dont have much experience in some areas, so I m making the guide as NOOB-Friendly as possible... But it took some longer time than i expected, (plus you know I have a life too, have to work and eat and sleep smile.gif )

I placed the link in the first post, but too tired to write an extensive guide at the moment, will put all necessary bits tomorrow. So if you are not sure/confident you can do all the updates/installing drivers, please wait for tomorrow. Tomorrow, i will write a full guide on how to install fully working OSX on to NC10 and how to make a brick free system, and how to update it tomorrow.

cheers and good luck...

Now comes the best part....

What are your problems? thoughts? opinions? wishes to see in next NC10 package?

Wow, this is great! I can't wait til my Dell 1490 comes in so I can get this totally up and running!

I do have a question though: why do I make 3 new partitions before installation when I'm only installing os x on one? I assume it's to change 1 to the mac file system and the other for ntfs?

good question... those are for next steps which i have not explained yet...

osx1 is for MAIN
osx2 is for CLONE of the MAIN for safety testings of updates... if you brick clone partition, you wont loose anything smile.gif (you will understand and appreciate this over time smile.gif trust me)
osx3 is for download and etc in case... you can keep it as dos/fat partition as well, to transfer/read files between windows and osx...

however osx1 and osx2 has to be same mac osx journaled!

answer enough?

Ahhhhh, looks like I jumped the gun a bit. wink.gif I'll prob keep the 3rd partition in dos/fat format to swap files between the 2, like you said.

Thank you so much for everything!

Well well! Just as I was thinking of getting an NC10 and just as I was idly searching for the OS X solution, this thread pops up!

Fantastic work Mysticus.

One question: if I wanted to repartition the Windows C drive down a little, would I run into problems? And if I wanted to remove it completely, could I just install OS X as my only OS?

Ok .. two questions smile.gif

also be carefull with the back cover when you receive the wifi card... While opening the back cover be very gentle with the monitor connection areas... the hook parts are very sensitive... use some plastic phone car or something while parting those apart from the hook and the battery areas......

lan issue i dont know ... but wifi may get a solution if official update from oem is released (god knows when? tomorrow? next year?) if you wanna wait for it, it is your decission, i just wanted a quick solution, which is not too expensive, because this thing without internet will suck... smile.gif it will be only a media center to play your music and videos without internet...

Honestly, I'd prob just get a dell 1490 card. It works OTB with OS X as well as XP and there's no need to rely on upcoming drivers that may not even function as well as you would hope (on top of the fact that who knows when the drivers will be released. I've read that they were supposed to come out very soon, but I think the initial dates that they promised have already come and passed).

::EDIT::

Forgot to mention this little tidbit too - the 1490 card is pretty damn cheap. I got it for $25 shipped, which is actually higher than what I've heard other people have got it for, but I bought it off somebody in the states on ebay and not from Hong Kong/China.

usb working...
memory card slot working (only tested with sd so far)

should not be a problem with an iphone at all...

ricpersi: please leave it as it is... because it is easier for me to control files from one location... having it mirrored to other places will make me do additional work on changing things... i have MU account and thinking of mirroring already, i have even direct link with no waiting, but these take up more bandwidth and having more mirror slows down the process...

Applied update. Now when I boot into OSX I see the apple logo and then it goes black and returns to the boot loader. Great.

During the second install of the NC10 AIO I got the: your system needs to be restarted, please hold down the power button for a few seconds message.

More info as I try safe and verbose.
This is what I get in verbose:

Safe & verbose does the same thing.
Safe goes to the apple logo (grey) to black and back to boot loader.

Any ideas?
 Mysticus C*
which distro you started with? the above screen shows acpi/apic non matching version problem... also it is better to state, wheter you followed the guide? or you just only followed update path? what did you do, what you didnt do?

because if you followed the entire guide as it is written, you should not have a single problem...

you should not have above problem if you installed fix 1 in the system function/ps2 fixes

what other things did you install or not installed? and in which order?
Pezmc
I definitely chose f1 as I was confused as to what it did when I ticked it. I even checked it against your PDF.
Any ideas on how to fix it?

the fix for it can be tricky, but i need to know exactly how you started? which distro? which version osx? and which options did you choose?

MSIWindowsx86, burnt to dvd and installed of that (used friends offices USB cd drive).
Version 10.5.4.
Everything including sound, keyboard, mouse and wifi (on 1500) worked fine with out any patches.

Used the latest copy of your patch, even check instructions to get it exactly right (part one, real update, part two).

Any ideas?

something is not right in what you are saying... because if you did the part1=real update=part two in correct order, acpi/apic would be corrected, and you should not have those issues...

the only thing i can think of is bios settings... but again your start point is important! (i didnt use msiwindosx, i used Jas, which should not make any difference anyway...)

can you check your bios settings as in the guide?

and what options did you choose in the part two part? give me exact details! either the order, or choices you made may have something wrong...

Note: I will try to grab an MSIWindOSX86 somehow, to install and update to create your problem later to see if it has anything to do with this problem.... just searching around for that distro now...
Pezmc
Bios is exactly the same - EDB Enabled (not default)
Still no change.

I chose exactly what the printscreen in the guide showed from the top down. Ticked nothing that wasn't ticked in the guide.

Problem still occurs. Happy to continue trouble shooting to try and resolve the problem.

A sudden change has occurred. Now instead of going back to boot it says you need to shut down your computer (please note I did NOTHING apart from going in to bios. Comparing and exiting without save).
In verbose it shows:

and stops (waited over 5 minutes)

In safe and verbose quite a few "unsupported errors" and boot takes about 5 minutes
Then I can log in. Everything is really slow though (lack of drivers?).

Still happy to go!

it sound as if msiwindosx86 is installing some additional drivers? unless you are telling me correctly

if you can download a program called Transmac (for windows to access your osx partitions) and grab two kexts (drivers) for me to check wheter they are correct or not...

/system/library/extensions/appleacpiplatform.kext
............................................./appleapic.kext

on another thinking, in jas, i recommended using smbios resolver that goes with vanilla smbios, so you dodnt need to install it again in the update package however i dont know what is msinwindosx is using as smbios and additional drivers...

acpi
apic
smbios

a bit suspicious to me...

I will download the msiwind version (will take 1-2 days probably for known reasons) and try to figure out what changes they have, in the mean time, i suggest you to grab a JAS DVD, that i have been referring...

Kexts here in rar.

Read my updated post above.
(Will edit this one and attach the kext's)

i read it,

it is related to acpi-apic-smbios maybe the bootloader that mswindosx using i dont know... i will install msiwind to recreate the problem but until i do so, i cant tell which one is causing the trouble... i need to see the drivers being loaded up... and see the rotten egg... causing the trouble...

note: msiwind may take less time to download (-at 10% already) than expected, shows as ~2 hr to finish, maybe i can have a test in 1-2 hrs smile.gif

pexmc: I checked your files, and they are not replaced! meaning you either not installed fix1 package, or somehow they have been replaced again... i m investigating... your problem is wrong acpi-apic!
srcshelton
I'm currently in Cyprus with intermittent (to say the least wink.gif ) 'net access, but having downloaded the installer package last night my first impressions are:
  • Headphones still don't work - the Audieee package's "Off" option turns sound off until unmuted, as does the headphones option (even with 'phones connected, they remain silent). If the sound is muted and unmuted or reduced to zero and then brought back up, sound comes back through the internal speakers as usual. I can only assume that the audio codec on the Samsung requires pokes to different ports to the Asus;
  • The alternative to Audieee ("Sound Output Tool"?) installs no files...
  • One of the included PowerMangement.bundles causes the battery status menu item and the power management functions of the System Preferences pane to disappear;
  • There are at least a couple of ApplePS2Controller.kexts included, one of which causes the mouse to go crazy when selecting a menu item after sleep.

I've got a boot-132 based 10.5.5 install with extensions on the EFI partition, so I was extracting drivers to find any updated versions - but what I'd really like now is working headphones. Once I get back home and can boot from a Linux LiveCD, I'm hopeful that the ALSA utilities and tools can reveal the Samsung-specific changes needed.
Mr_CP
Thought i'd add that i'm having simlar problems as Pezmc when using msiwindosx86 as starting point, thinking there maybe something specific to the original install. i'll take a pic of what -v says and post that in a bit

(Incidentally, this is with CHUD installed and using the supplied AppleAzalia audio driver...)

P.S. What is the recommended third-party brightness changing software? This would also be highly useful wink.gif
Mr_CP
Right here's the screen shot, sorry for horrible shot but can't be bothered to get camera so used phone camera, only happened after i'd installed the update and ticked all the boxes that the guide showed.

srchelton: sound switch for audiee doesnt work confirmed, most likely when i tested it i was using script.sh as well, so script.sh was providing the sound most likely... script.sh is working fine for switching audio, but not the applications... they are probably specific to those in msiwind..

the entire package is not fully complete yet, as i said i m testing some more things, so placed some experimental stuffs, and titles which does not have things inside...

for your sleep mouse issue: i explained it! right arrow key wakes up pressed by software/driver dunno why, but just press right arrow key once, it goes away... if you know a better driver (appleps2controller) let me know so i can include it...

for brightness: http://www.charcoaldesign.co.uk/shades which i will include in next package revision...

i m gonna add another title in first post for "known issues"

mr_cp... your issue is acpi-apic, for some reason they are not replaced!, on my test system, they are being replaced perfectly fine... i seriously dont know how they are reverted back to official version ones? in my package, i have scripts running to check and delete the acpi and apic before they are installed! so no way they can be replaced... you must have somehow forget to install "fix 1" package in your install... but anyways... be patient, i m downloading the msiwindosx at the moment, to test...

in the mean time, what you can do is, use transmac, go to your root of the osx drive, find the backupkexts prior to update/ folder, and copy the appleacpiplatform and appleapic.kext s to /system/library/extensions/ folder, (of course delete the current ones in extensions... you should be good to go... i m telling you again, if you didnt choose the fix package it sure will happen!

good question smile.gif

the difference probably is that msi version has keyb mouse drivers already so you dont need usb keyb mouse for the first time usage...

after the 10.5.5 udpate there is not much difference smile.gif

but people usually do what they like, and other people try to debug the problems...
