My jas download is on 92% as soon as its done i can test it out and let you know the results as soon as i can

make sure
your original jas has md5: F7E82424D6EFB474950B361DB7840C91
and samsung ppf dvd: FD8FA6AF80F921E45CB9E21A81557780

where can I find these code? I just patched the Jas iso, but it went very fast making me wonder whether it is done or not?
About the wireless card, I think I'll wait for the dw1490, since it'll fix and work perfectly on NC10. I don't want to open the case twice...risky

well if it took more than 3-5 secs it would make you wonder... but 3-4 secs is normal dont worry smile.gif

for windows, search for a program accuhash.... that is one calculates correctly...
for mac, it has built in function, just use terminal: type : md5 file.name
i think if i m not wrong smile.gif

for the wireless, measurements are 3cmX5cm and connecter is on the narrow side (3cm side) see the pic ( though it is 1390 but almost exactly identical)

if u check the guide i made 3 partitions for osx and one for wiindows...

just delete the 3 rd one (osx3 - 14700 i think?) delete it and make one 10000 mb and one 4700 mb partition out of it... dont format or assing letter for the 10gb one, and format 4700 as fat32 and assign letter, as well as name it as install smile.gif there you have everything...

osx1 20gb for osx main
osx2 20gb for clone
osx3 10gb for data/downloads
install (fat32) 4.7 gb for install image smile.gif

Hi All,

Thanks for all the work, Mysticus ...

I am completely new to Mac, so pls bear with me ...

Apparently, someone got the Atheros AR5007 working HERE

Have you guys tried it out? I have tried but not working ... i am not even sure whether the steps that I have done is completely correct ...

I am using ideneb v1.3 Leopard 10.5.5 and it says that it has to be vanilla kernel ... i checked mine and it is darwin kernel ...

The question is;

Is it possible to install your (Mysticus) version of Samsung update of Vanilla kernel on top of my version of leopard? Since I already have 10.5.5, I assume that I do not need to do the update.

On iDeneb v1.3, I do not have to do anything and I got the sound, keyboard, mouse working except the usb port which i have to connect the device before logging into mac .. i understand that is the version difference but my priority is to have the WiFi working before going to fix other stuff ...

Hi

I am getting SAM Multimedia read write errors when trying to install the patched Jas ISO, any suggestion on how to fix this?

dell 1390 works fine, probably it's my device thah have some issues!!
 Mysticus C*
myi4u: vanilla kernel means original apple kernel, it does not mean its name is vanilla! its name is darwin!

for the atheros, i would not do what the method says and risk my pc... if you read it carefully, you will be wrestling with kernel panics/restarts/and other issues...

jooster: sam errors can indicate 3 things!

1) your dvd drive is not able read your dvd media
2) your dvd media is damaged (you burned it more than 4x speed or simply it was defective)
3) your jas iso is damaged! (have you checked the MD5 on the original Jas MD5 and after the ppf? do they both match?

================================================================================
========

As a side note: I have black version of te NC10 and it installs just fine from hdd or dvd, both methods work smoothly...

On the other hand, MR_CP has a white model, and keep getting ACPI/APIC and some buffer messages at boot and getting stuck... This is indication of something called BAD BIOS issue, caused by bios's dsdt tables! And if you dont use correct version of the acpi/apic drivers it will stuck at the buffer message for ever...

However, something is strucking m as well! Because he also tried MSIWindOSX86, which installs boot 132 (read around about it) which can be the cause as well. This is because boot 132 can load two drivers cache (one from /S/L/Extensions.mkext and one from custom location) for safety purposes of official updates... I didnt check the bootloader install procedure in the msi, but it may be that it install a second partition or location for the bootloader which loads for osx all the time... this can cause confusion in the system and mixed-match drivers loading may be happening i dunno, but there is no other reasonable explanation.

1) either white ones has different architecture (since whites came out first i think, they may be rev A product) or
2) msiwind's boot 132 is not wiped proparly and causinig driver caches to mix up...

Hi

Thanks for the reply, I had already started to burn the iso again and on different media and at a lower speed than 4x. This has worked and I manage to complete the installation successfully. Unfortunately on first reboot I am just geeting to the white screen with the apple logo and it then it reboots, any suggestions. I have tried loading with -v option but it reboots to quickly to see what it is displying.

Any help much apprecited

read my comment about sleep smile.gif i m still trying to figure out but could not find solution

sleep works on battery only
sleep works for 1 sec on power connected and wakes up, when i checked the sys logs, it shows a sign of usb activity, the only thins i usually see for this issue is always pointing me to bluetooth direction... which is connected to an internal usb port... and cant be software OFFed (switched off i mean)... so when it is on power, it keeps sending/receiving signals, however when on battery only it does not!... take the power cable and see your self.. smile.gif

virtualization should work however keep in mind that this does not have a ferrari engine and juice to suck it all smile.gif you know what i mean?

also: always read post#1 i will rearrange it soon to make it more infomative... about udpates / guides /links etc...

cheers... for the donation as well smile.gif and good luck...

oic ... so, is there a way to check if the darwin kernel that i have is the original vanilla version rather than the patched version? Or is it not relevant at all?

btw, is it still alright to install your samsung patch to it? I believe that your answer is that i have to find out myself?

open terminal: and type: uname -a
it will say a full line, read it carefully, it says anything like ToH or VooDoo it is not original...
normally it will say 9.x.x (x are version numbers) Darwin Kernel version 9.x.x

samsung patch is applied to Jas 10.5.4 server/client DVD and converts it to Samsung NC10 plain installation DVD

like i said in first post... more projects coming such as: a small script to convert your 10.5.4 DVD iso to 10.5.5 or 10.5.6 dvd iso without you knowing anything...

that's great... Thanks for the guide and everything that you have done. Fast reply too.

i am still not satisfied with no wifi but i intend to find out the kismac method even though it did not work for me the first time. actually, i did something stupid and messed up my Mac. i will be installing it again this weekend and i will use ur guide of partitioning so that i dont have to use the dvd again.

after a fresh install, i hope that i will get the wifi working ... still, i dont have much hope because i am too inexperience

First of all a BIG thanks to Mysticus C* as the work you have done here is amazing and the fact that you are supporting it like you are is even more impressive - so thanks.

I'm on the verge of buying a netbook (partly because I can't afford a macbook right now, and partly because the graphics card on my beautiful 17" Powerbook has blown sad.gif so have had to disable it and therefore can't use some applications properly eg. iphoto slideshow, itunes coverflow), and up until Mysticus C* performed his magic (on what the reviews are saying is quite clearly the best 10" netbook out there) I was going to buy an MSI Wind as it appeared to have the best support community and hence the most stable kit.

So, to come to my question/s....how are people getting on with their NC10's? Is it stable for full time use? Is video good quality? Do you get kernel panics? Is everything (that Mysticus C* has got working) actually working for everyone? etc, etc.

Would really appreicate peoples reply before I go out and buy one of these baby's... smile.gif

i have the black UK model, and it is working perfectly fine even for long use, didnt have come to a trouble so far watching movies etc... but didnt try iphoto or video/pic editing software as well...

the current situation is that 95% the things work fine, however there are some glitches as well...

glitches are:

+ sleep when power adapter connected does not work (it works but wakes up instantly due to usb activity and the only one comes to question is bluetooth adapter! it is sending signals while on power adapter, causing wake event, however when on soly battery, it works just fine... so it is a glitch to sort out later..
+ LAN -- no drivers no work... smile.gif (if lan is important get yourself an apple usb lan smile.gif )
+ original WIFI, some what there is a workaround looks like but it is too buggy and will require you to constantly replace files every other updates... just get yourself a dell dw 1490 adapter you will forget about the issues
+ mic and headphone issues since drivers are not modded for these models yet, they dont work well, there is a switch script to enable headphone but still a work in progress (same with wind with a little step ahead with programs that does teh job automatically but still you need to press buttons to switch headphone/speaker)
+ brightness control...

these are teh glitches but i think liveable with...

so it comes down to your choice and willingness...

Because of I've got an original Leopard dvd, is it possible to install Leopard from the original dvd after the standard installation applying some kind of package-pach on top?
I'd like to fomrat all the disk and install a fresh installation from an external usb dvd on my future NC10 ... what do you think it's the best way to do it?

Can be used bootcamp in the NC10?
jooster
can I just confirm something please on the update to 10.5.5.

Can you confirm that the steps are:-

Install Combo updater from apple but DO NOT restart
Install NC10 with the following settings

Kernel: 9.5.0 vanilla with fix, Chipset: ICHx, Audio, Network: Nothing, System Function: PS2-fix1, (i will replace the ps2 driver later, as it has sleep issue...), of course Stage 3 dsmos fix

Should video not be ticked as well.

Let the machine reboot twice and all should be well, I did this last time and even on battery power sleep did not seem to want to work so I was wondering if I had missed something.

QUOTE (intrax @ Nov 28 2008, 03:15 PM) *
What I found sofar:

Samsung nc10 is having the better 6-cell battery, which could give you about 5 hours working time, but no lan connectivity in osx86 as the Marvell Yukon 88W8040 is not supported. This will be solved over time as a lot more people would like a driver for this baby. Audio not fully sorted.

MSI-wind has the battery problem (only 3-cells) that is here in NL. In other countries the 6-cell might be available. Everything working in OSX except proper audio. MSI-wind is able to overclock the Atom processor and generally better compatible to OSX imho.

Both netbooks lack oob wifi compatibility and you need to swap the wifi card on both models for a Dell 1490 card oss, which will give them airport capability

Would go for an MSI-wind if your main focus is on OSX and if you can get the 6-cell battery model in your country.

Happy shopping !... wink.gif

wind<========>nc10
+wind has 8.9inc screen vs 10.2 nc10
+3cell battery vs 6cell
+lan, wifi and sound issues are same
+screen quality probably same since they are both made by SAMSUNG smile.gif
+storage are optional choices (not bad with nc10 smile.gif )
+overclocking doesnt mean a good thing on a laptop with tiny space and no better fan options... prove me wrong but apple is frying many new boards already on new macbooks if you read around... and think of o/c a atom in a tiny piece with no modded fan/heatsink think twice!

hardware specs are pretty much identical, apart from size of screen and storage etc, so i dont see why msi wind is a better option?? with a smaller screen lower specs overall... just because it came out earlier and more popular (bcoz of price) does not make it ideal choice for everyone...

if you have a chance to see these two machines side by side in a local store, i suggest you to go do it, and see for yourself...

1inc+ screensize will make huge difference! and performance wise, cpu o/c is a bad shot for long term! u can get better performance by getting better parts like ssd (cheaper option is to build yourself with a sata 2.5 case with raid for two CF cards smile.gif search around you will get a similar desktop performance with laptop power in terms o hdd performance) or get a 7200 rpm better quality hdd... a bit ram upgrade... you will have ultimate machine with samsung...

just my thoughts...

jooster: correct i forgot video smile.gif my bad so sorry... i will edit the information smile.gif
intrax
Sorry Mysticus C have to correct you on this one:

The screen sizes are identical i.e 10.2 inch. There is however an 8.9 inch version of the msi-wind, which usually comes with linux and an 80Gb drive.

Main disadvantage for the nc10: no lan (on osx)
Main disadvantage for the wind: no 6 cell battery (can be bought separately or might be included in your country not in nl at this moment however)

On the other specs both are more or less identical I agree, but being able to tune and overclock the wind is something most tweakers like a lot. Make sure though you respect the cooling issues as you might fry the board if you don't know what you're doing. However lots of info on this on the boards.

well no lan issue for nc10 but if it is def a must, than probably nc10 is not for everyone, however i still insist on O/C side that is not a good thing at all on notebook, if you dont have access to better heatsink/fan and most importantly knowledge... apple's new macbooks are frying recently if you read around and they are not even o/c

so this choices are really down to people's expectations and budget and the willingness... i suggst go check both in a local store and find which one you like more...

and more important:how is Leopard running?is it fast, slow, normal???everyone here's got it but no one tells anything about how the OS goes...

os boots with 10.5.4 at ~50 secs from the time you hit enter osx selection to usable state

os boots with 10.5.5 at about ~30 secs from the time you hit enter to osx selction to usable state (i dont know why it works like that but it is smile.gif ) maybe kernel/driver detection maybe some improvements...)

copy operations sux, it takes long compared to normal desktops... for obvious reasons...

on my other laptop (totaly different and not related) i replaced my 5400 one with a 7200rpm (with 16mb cache), and performance was very noticable, from 20mb-> 30mb write speeds...
this can be due to model/type as well, not all 7200 rpms performs the same... so make sure what you are buying...

for power wise, it will take 10-15% more power maybe, but this can be adjusted with the value of time as well...

say you run/copy things 20-30% faster but consume a bit more energy vs, copy things slower but consume less, so over time, in my opinion, it may be a slight difference, this has been discussed and i answered the question... but you can not know everytg until you install and try and see with your own eyes...

TO EVERYONE:
I dont wanna be RUDE but.... From now on...

something strange.....I follow the 1st post and install the samsunosx86 on my nc10, it just constantly reboot after a flash apple white screen, like I update 10.5.5 on windosx86.

I'm sure the jas dvd was patched, as the md5 code is correct. And I tried check/uncheck the "Samsung nc10 package" in the custom page, same result, the system non-stop reboot.

check the bios settings as shown in the pdf guide page 54 (see the EBD-execute disable bit - enabled, this is by default not enabled! check all the settings...)

TO EVERYONE:
I dont wanna be RUDE but.... From now on...
This topic/section is not the place for buying advices / compatibility / review questions, See "Buying Thoughts, Reviews, and Recommendations" section of the forum, and keep THIS TOPIC clean please. The title of this topic is Samsung NC10 installations/mods etc... Meaning you have ALREADY DECIDED to go with Samsung...

Sorry, I realised that, but was responding to a question... smile.gif

Maybe these posts can be extracted and posted in new thread "thoughts on comparing msi-wind and samsung nc10 for osx"
on Buying Thoughts, Reviews, and Recommendations

i know mate, no problem, just it gets boring after sometime, people will be keep coming asking same questions again and again...

i made this topic to discuss installation, modding and etc, but not comparing it to something else, because obviously you are reading Samsung NC10 users' opinions, meaning they decided to go with nc10 for whatever reasons, and i m helping them install painlessly and as noob friendly as possible... But if you understand, it will be really boring discussing why you should decide nc10 or eepc or msi or whatever on a NC10 topic...

Like discussing on a Ferrari forum wheter you should buy a ferrari or lamborghini? smile.gif absurd isnt it?

i will make the change later but the ps2 driver in the nc10 package is a bit freaky one smile.gif remember i said after sleep right arrow key comes up pressed and if u click on any menu they ll go crazy...

you can fix it... with the previous driver

all you need to do is replace the backed up driver (appleps2controller.kext) in the backupkextspriorto1055 update folder in the root smile.gif to /system/library/extensions folder... either using terminal or kexthelper or whatever way u know...

Hi Mysticus thanks for all the great work tongue.gif
I've followed your guide and used the installer etc, and it works great so far.

One thing I've noticed on my system is that the battery icon is missing from the menu bar.
If I run the mouse over the bar I get a drop down menu for the battery monitor, but no matter what I select I do not see the time remaining or the icon, any suggestions? huh.gif

Check the system preferences / enegery savings /options, there should be an option to enable the battery icon in the bar, however if the option is missing probably because a file is not working /mixing up functions...

open finder. go to system/library/extensions/ and find the AppleACPIBatteryManager.kext, this driver is causing conflict... right click and move to trash, restart, and check the same menu in the system preferences /enegery saving/ options it should show the battery this time just enable it

Thanks Mysticus your suggestion to delete the kext and restart fixed it biggrin.gif

i have not tried it but will let you know in couple of mins...

working just fine: are you sure you installed gfx drivers?

oh... i am not sure what driver i am using. where can i check it?

can i use your samsung all-in-one installer to install the gfx driver?

one more thing, i could not figure out how to change the driver for a hardware in mac. like in windows, i can just point and select the driver that i wan to use.

thank you
