i guess the most important part and the simplest part i dont understand is that are these upgrades for when ur alreadying running mac os x 10.5.4 or 10.5.5 and want to get into 10.5.6 or is it a full setup i can just install straight from xp and get into 10.5.6 without having installed osx yet. i'm assuming u have to have installed osx first so that u can run the dvd upgrade in the root(osx) drive? sorry for being so all over the place

rukawa - I think we're wasting some of the space on this board with this most basic discussion! smile.gif

It depends on how you do it. If you go the windosx86 route, you can do the ddmac procedure described by Mysticus or you can simply install it via an external dvd drive (making sure you've created the proper partition for it). Once that is installed, you then make sure you have mysticus' 10.5.6 fix downloaded and sitting on your desktop, and make sure you download the 10.5.6 combo update from Apple. Run the combo update, stopping short of the restart at the end. Then do the Mysticus fix, then do the restart.

Okay, out of respect for the rest of the folks who are using this board, I think we should discontinue this particular thread of discussion, as it is WAY behind where everyone else is at.

Besides, I'm anxious to see what Mysticus has to say about the full audio fix which has been rumored to be coming...

i bought both the msi wind and the nc10, and after much debating i decided the nc10 was clearly superior.

enjoy!

i will definetely incorporate all the changes and additional workaround into future and current distro through ppfs...

most of u now has 10.5.6 iso already so al the changes in ppf should not take more than couple of MBs...

DJKwai: i dont know what you mean by we are way behind everyone else? we are behind what and what are you referrring in your comparison?

LAN? no driver? we cant do anything,
WIFI, no driver (not counting the buggy method) so only way is through bcm145x series wifis at the moment...
Bluetooth, didnt check the work around yet but wen i check and confirm, it is easy to make an installer to fix the issue...
Sound: I am still waiting for the Voodoo team to supply the driver, from the early stage, they had too many testers so, i got off the bus, but getting news from dense closely, as he mentioned everything is working proparly and well! just small kinks being worked out, and after that it will be out in the wild... soon (cant give a date since i m not the one making it, sorry)

Apart from these obvious stuffs, we are not behind anything... Also soon enough, i will be ordering the touchscreen as well...

we already have the latest apple release of 10.5.6 in our netbooks... but we cant do much about things we dont have any control...

I m not sure your expectations from this thread, but you are welcome to use any thread in the forum or elsewhere...

ur totally right, thanx again bro. but i have one last basic question and i promise i'll drop it... u say do the mysticus fix right b4 the restart, what is the mysticus fix? the 10.5.6 nc10 iso he made (3-4 gigs)? or the dvd upgrade file(48mb)? or something else?

hahaha no mysticus he didn't mean we are behind in development. he meant that MY noobish discussion with him in the couple previous posts are way behind where every1 else in this thread is at meaning while i was still in the beginning stages of installing os x, every1 else is at a more advanced stage having already installed os x and updated to 10.5.6 and discussing future fixes or more advanced problems. He and I both know we've come a long way with this thanks to people like you.

Sorry for the confusion! I was purely referring to the exchange between myself and rukawa biggrin.gif . You've done great work here, and certainly where we all have gotten our NC10 up to right now is NOT behind anyone else!!!! Once voodoo comes through with the sound driver, I think our OSX NC10s will be untouchable...

nope. mysticus made a post-10.5.6 patch that you can download at Biketown: nc10_10.5.6_install.pkg.zip is the name of the file.

Then you will still have to do the brightness fix, trackpad fix, and you "might" have to do the AzaliaAudio (I say "might" because I wasn't sure if I had to do this because I had messed up something earlier). You can find the Azalia around the boards.

Guys, Can someone help me please?

I foolishly installed Windows7 over my XP partition (I had both XP and OSX running well, with the bootloader at startup giving me the option to choose).

Now Windows7 boots automatically, as it has overwritten the bootloader installed by the OSX86 DVD.

I'm ashamed to say I'm a bit of a noob to multibooting, so I need to know how to reinstall that bootloader so I can choose the OS at startup. I also want to boot into OSX by default, not Windows.

Please let me know what to do, my OSX partition is still there, I just can't boot into it.

Your help is much appreciated.

Please follow the instructions to get the adjusted brightness level after sleep or reboot:

1. You will need to install Sleep Watcher
http://www.macupdate.com/download.php/1038...tcher_2.0.5.dmg

When sleep watcher installs it creates a couple of new files in your /etc directory
rc.sleep
rc.wakeup

2. Set wake up and sleep commands
you will need to edit /etc/rc.sleep file

go to the end of the file. Add a return or two for blank space and add the following lines.

reggie_se -D PCI -i 16 -r -a 0xF4 -B 32 2>&1 | grep 'Offset' | cut -d 'x' -f 3 | cut -d ' ' -f 1 > /etc/last_brightness

(Change 16 to be your PCI number.)

Save your file

Next edit the wakeup file
/etc/rc.wakeup

again, go to the end of the file and add a few blank lines and add:

BRN=$(cat /etc/last_brightness)
reggie_se -D PCI -i 16 -w 0x$BRN -a 0xF4 -B 32

(Change 16 to be your PCI number.)

After that let the computer go to sleep and when it wakes up, the monitor will restore to it's previously saved brightness level. rolleyes.gif

sorry i don't understand what i had to write instead of sixteen.....do you mean the graphic card's id?

Hi,

I'm not sure of the exact steps....but you need to get a file called "chain0" (do a google search) and place this on the root of your Windows partition. You then need to make a change to add an entry into the Vista bootloader (again I've never done this).

The other thing you could try is setting your OSX partition to the active partition (you should be able to do this with the diskpart command line utility thats included in windows) as what is probably happened is that the Vista installer has set the Windows partition to active instead of the OSX one...

I know its not the exact steps but hopefully points you in the right direction...

Hi,

Firstly I would like to thank Mysticus C for the great work he has done getting a really nice install of MacOSx on the NC10!

I've been reading though these forums over the past few days and putting together ideas on ways we can improve things. This thread caught my interest with regard to the future of installing MacOSx on non apple machines. Basically it allows you to use the hidden EFI partition on a GPT formatted disk to boot a retail copy of Leopard with no changes to the actual install, its a completely retail installation! The magic is that any modified KEXTs are stored in the EFI partition and you don't have to touch the retail unmodified extentions (for the most part) in /System/Library/Extensions...

So last night I used an external USB drive with an EFI partition and used my MacBook Pro to do a totally clean Leopard install (10.5.6). I followed the steps in the thread i mentioned earlier to setup the EFI partition and copied the NC10 modifed KEXTS from the Mysticus NC10 install disk into the EFI partition.

I plugged the external drive into my NC10 and managed to boot into a totally clean and unmodified OSX install! So now I'm going to work on trying to get the proper video, sound, and bluetooth working (I replaced my Wifi with a Dell one BTW) as the KEXTS I put into the EFI partiton so far only cover the basics (Keyboard, trackpad, essentials etc).

If I can get the EFI partition into a good enough state that it allows most of the funcionallity I will take an image of it and post it so that any NC10 user just needs to restore this image to their own EFI partition so they can perform retail installs, this should mean that overall we can peform system updates (to 10.5.7 for example when it comes out) and not have to worry about overwritting out tweaked kernals or extensions).

The reason why I'm posting is that i need some help with some stuff....

1) I'm trying to figure out which bootloader to use, three are various ones flying around which allow you to use a custom DSDT file, set the EFI strings in the Boot.plist, and one that lets you specify the SMBIOS properties. So can anyone give advice on which one to use that will provide the most features while still being compatable with EFI boot method?

2) Which SMBIOS type KEXT works best on the NC10? I would like my NC10 to be indentified as a MacBook Air (it just looks nicer), at the moment I have my SMBIOS strings set in the Boot.plist so that my NC10 is identified as an MacBook Pro, I think its a specific version of Chameleon bootloader which has this functionality. I think a better method would be to place some sort of SMBIOS resolver KEXT in the EFI partition, so can anyone point me to the KEXT which works best.

3) Regarding EFI strings, does anyone have an example Boot.plist for the NC10 which includes the EFI string that lets Video / Audio work without modifiing the KEXTs (I know with the audio its probably not possible) as I think this should be possible for at least the video!

4) The DSDT.aml file. Does anyone know of any existing tweaks for the 04AC bios version (latest) that fix any problems or improve anything? This DSDT.aml can also be put in the root of the EFI partition.

I think Mysticus C has done some great work, and there are only a few little things that we need to do make the install on the NC10 almost perfect, in my opinion they are 1) Getting the sound working fully 2) Getting sleep on AC to work 3) Getting sleep / wake on lid open / close to work fully. 4) Getting Speedstep to work (I've tried the VoodooPower but it causes problems when on battery).

Thanks for reading! Lets try getting our heads together some more wink.gif

Hi,

If I remember correctly this looks like the instructions I used to enable the bluetooth on/off functionality, I found it on another forum somewhere...

The file you need to edit is /System/Library/Extensions/IOBluetoothFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/BroadcomUSBBluetoothHCIController.kext/Contents/Info.plist

e.g. #sudo vi /System/Library/Extensions/IOBluetoothFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/BroadcomUSBBluetoothHCIController.kext/Contents/Info.plist

In this file you should find the following...

<key>idProduct</key>
<integer>8448</integer>
<key>idVendor</key>
<integer>2652</integer>

Change the 8448 to 8449

Save the file then remove /System/Library/Extensions.mkext , then reboot.

e.g. #sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
#sudo reboot -n

ok guys, i will make some reading, and try to put an installer for all the work arounds been found... esp bluetooth issue... i personally didnt look at the bluetooth problem before, but looks like it is just an id fix... i hope everyone's ids are the same...

psneddon: i already have aml fix but didnt finish it up yet to test as i went on a trip... i will check it up and test... smbios part is a bit confusing, if i try to go through details everyone has different expectations... so i will keep it vanilla so it stays as it is... but i know some of you want different things for functional or cosmetic reasons... once i m don with aml power/sleep problems would be solved (would be becuase i dont know the outcome yet), sound will be ready soon, so dont worry about it too much. Speedstep is not in my lists to do at the moment, but from the look of it, it also has to do with power state functions missing in the bios, which may/maynot be fixed in aml... we ll see...

milton: i may include previous fb driver to see if it will help with your situation, but with the latest drivers, it only works with desktop extention, and not with cloning... for some reason... bluetooth fix will be out in the wild shortly... smile.gif

gaz: scroll function works with the beta drivers as far as i remember, and i didnt wanna involve with the details of it, if you wanna do it, there have been some post regarding that sometime back...

djkwai: ok no problem...

for the update issues: efi partition/folder is a good way thinking forward, and the only thing that was putting me off of it is the amount of inexperienced users' ability to mess up things and create chaos smile.gif after couple of kinks worked out, we can move to full efi folder use and go on with the updates... hopefully dense's solution for gma along with voodoo hda comes soon, and we can wrap things up a bit...

thank you guys, changed the id of bluetooth fixed the switch on/off problem!!!
Now I am able to use the shared bluetooth pan connection of my iMac, but it's really really slow...
I got very high high ping to reach my iMac that acts as router....like 15000 ms!!!
taking a look the Console Messages I see a lot of those errors:

_CFGetHostUUIDString: unable to determine UUID for host. Error: 35

It maybe related ? Are there any fix to this?

So cloning doesn't work. Was it working in 10.5.5 ???

best
psneddon
I've always found PAN in MacOS to be really slow, even on my real MacBook Pro, keeps dropping the connection etc. With regard to the UUID issue, that is something that is usually stored in the NVRAM/SMBIOS etc on a real mac, so as far as I know (and I don't actually know that much) you need to use one of the modified SMBIOS KEXTS to inject the UUID string for the host. Most of the SMBIOS stuff is purely cosmetic, but I'm notsure if that one is?

* bios override for sleep/wake in power fix (aml fix) pretty much i got all the info but didnt apply it yet...
* some other minor issues
* another PPF (should not be more than couple of MBs) to incorporate all the recent changes into to latest 10.5.6 iso (no more installer as most of you dont understand this, and keep changing original file names, and/or dont know how to place files in correct places... tons of headache for me to answer)

I really can't stand the bad behaviour of the vga out mode: today I clicked on mirrors display by accident and I messed up everything. I had to reinstall. I found out anyone that I could delete the /Library/Prefereces/com.apple.windowserver.plist to fix thing, anyway.

I think I can help you with a few things here. My NC10 is running a retail DVD vanilla install very well. I think you've found the thread from Munky which explains how to install the bootloader and prepare the EFI partition.

1) I'm using efi_boot 6.1 - works very well and provides support for DSDT.aml

2) I'll look up what I'm using but AFAIR my setup is far from perferct. I'd be glad if we'd find a solution that covers every aspect. E.g. I've tried to install Parallels 4 and that didn't work - presumably because my NC10 isn't properly identified as a mac!?

3) Stuart (srcshelton) posted a Boot.plist which enables the video to work without the Natit.kext. AFAIK you'd still need to patch the video kext to work with the device ID of the gfx card.

4) I-m afraid I can't help you here. I'm still running the old version of the bios. I've got my corrected DSDT.aml from Stuart's weblog (google is your friend) but that presumably won't help you.

Best regards,
Timo

PS: I'm successfully using the "old" version of SuperHai's VoodooPower called GenericCPUPowerManagement.kext or something similarly unpronounceable ;-) That one works for me without any problems.

I assume that you've not replaced the stock Wifi card?

The error usually occurs when MacOS tries to read the MAC address of your primary ethernet port to use as a Unique Identifier. However, given that neither the onboard LAN nor the stock WLAN work out of the box (and bluetooth IDs work somewhat differently) this fails - which could lead on to all sorts of problems.

I'm afraid that the fix for this problem is to replace the stock Wifi card with a working Broadcom variant.

(It may also be solved through the use of a USB ethernet adapter - such as the one which Apple sells for use with the (real ;) MacBook Air. I haven't tried this myself, though.)

So far as I'm aware, none of the SMBIOS kexts work (properly) on 10.5.6. This is apparently being worked on, but in addition the next release of the Chameleon bootloader, which is also expected to roll-in Munky's efi_boot, will have full support for specifying SMBIOS overrides in Boot.plist, removing the need to a separate kext.

Microsoft's Silverlight also refuses to install, thinking that the machine is PowerPC. This can be fixed by manually extracting the Archive.pax.gz from the installer and then copying the resulting bundle into Library/Internet Plug-Ins. Would a similar approach work with Parallels?

3) Stuart (srcshelton) posted a Boot.plist which enables the video to work without the Natit.kext. AFAIK you'd still need to patch the video kext to work with the device ID of the gfx card.

http://blog.stuart.shelton.me/archives/238#comment-6857

There's a script floating around somewhere, which I seem to have misplaced currently, which automagically copies the system video drivers and runs Perl against the Info.plists to modify them, without needing any manual intervention. This makes is easy to run 10.5.6 drivers on 10.5.6, rather than sticking with older ones. Might outdated drivers even be the cause of some of the VGA-out problems?

4) I-m afraid I can't help you here. I'm still running the old version of the bios. I've got my corrected DSDT.aml from Stuart's weblog (google is your friend) but that presumably won't help you.

http://blog.stuart.shelton.me/downloads/ wink.gif

10.5.6 doesn't actually need the DSDT fix in order to boot, but this does ensure that Darwin is given equal hardware access as Vista, and does ensure that HPETs are enabled and interrupts are routed to them - so it can't do any harm. The DSDT hasn't changed between firmware 02.CA and 04.CA, so this is safe to use on all NC10 hardware.

I added the old framebuffer driver in nc10 files section for those of you desperately need the clone screen function.
the installer will install old framebuffer and remove the current natit as old fb contains the functions to detect the display auto.

stuart: vga out is not problem of old/new drivers. it is some sort of fb related, and new fb is ok in desktop extension however, cloning has problem caused by the new/changed FB functions. Older fb which doesnt need natit (has display value) and works with cloning and extension as well, however it has more artifacts than the newer ones. Since these gma950s are not exact identical graphics (due to firmware and hw customization, also the OSX efi factor in it) we will always have trouble here and there... that is the sacrifice people need to make

(It may also be solved through the use of a USB ethernet adapter - such as the one which Apple sells for use with the (real wink.gif MacBook Air. I haven't tried this myself, though.)

Yes you were right: yesterday I have removed the airport card from my mac mini (I use it as media center connected to my tv) and added to my NC10 and those errors disappeared. Also I have correct file names inside ~Library/Preferences/ByHost with the MAC address of the WiFi card.

I have now only some minor issues:

- my UK keyboard still doesn't map correctly the characters even if I have installed the UK_Keyboard fix from Mysticus. Do I need to I need to do anything else after installing the package and logging out?

- I can't switch to audio output to use the headphone. I have read something about using CHUD. I have installed it already but I could find the instructions on how to use it in this long thread.
Couldn't it be great to have a FAQ section for each fix/workaround that point to the correct number of post in this thread?

- Still monitor mirroring is not working, but I am waiting Mysticus C for the old fb to test it out

- touchpad sensitivity it's too high, especially in vertical direction

- Finally, I hear the fan constantly on, but at very low RPM, audible only in the night, on even if I am not doing anything. I guess this is why no proper speedstepping or powermanagement is handled by the system. Is there any experimental support to speedstepping, fan control?

Apart of those small issues, I am very happy of this small toy (I have stitched today an apple logo over the samsung writing) and I want to thank you everybody here for all the support

All the best

Thank u mysticus C, I am gonna give a try to it later. So the only drawback is that I can have some artifacts. I didn't experienced artifacts with the current (natit) one. Anyway, I have tried in those days with several different monitor, and the beheaviour is sometime random: with the very monitor there are times it works fine and some with no supported mode error (in those case I have found a solution anyway: click on gather window and I am able to change the resolution of the external monitor just clicking to another one and again back to the one that said to be unsupported but this time it does). Anyway, at the end extended mode works fine for my job: keynote supports the extended display allowing to see in the primary one times, notes and following slide, while the full screen presentation on the external one. So it's even better smile.gif
I have only be sure that it will work always!!!!!

thanks a lot

milton:
+ i added the old fb driver to nc10 files section already
+ after installing uk kb fix package, you need go to system preferences / international /input menu and choose the UK layout, tick show input menu in menu bar, and choose uk layout, and disable the show input menu in menu bar option
+ audio switching works with azaliaaudio and the scripts (also chud package needs to be installed)
+ touchpad sensitivity problem exists and not much we can do due to its funny shape
+ there are some speedstep management (sort of) drivers but try on your own, as everyone getting different results from it... (it doesnt really bother me so i m not using anything at the moment for it... fan noise is really ignorable level unless u have way to sesitive ears...
+ artifacts happen when you go in and out of menus too many times......

For those of us who check (several times a day huh.gif) for news about the magical Voodoo driver for sound/mic support:

"At the end of the week its highly likely a public beta will be released. Source code will also be released so others can get involved."

If you're talking about the Bluetooth fix package, I noticed the same thing. Afterward I went into the file it should have modified and noticed there was still an entry that contained an idProduct of 8448. (In addition to one that was 8449) So I edited that to 8449, cleared the cache and rebooted. Then it worked fine. Not sure if there were two entries the package needed to modify or if it just modified the wrong one? YMMV

I'm having a heck of a time getting the brightness controls to work. I've added the two custom triggers, but every time I use them Quicksilver seems to freeze up. I've yet to see any change ... Anyone else run into this and have a fix?

Not a fix as such, but I use 'Butler' instead of quicksilver. works just as well and i prefer it.

it is the same fix i tested and working, the first entry is for built-in cards, and these cards in some models are identified as dongle, thats why probably didnt work for some of you...

i only changed the first one to avoid conflict....

as you can see there are many ids there, with same name with additiona of P, D, Dongle etc... looks like gotta change the other one as well, but dont know if it will cause conflict, so i will add two versions in one installer for people to try.... smile.gif that should solve the trouble...

Hi,

If I remember correctly this looks like the instructions I used to enable the bluetooth on/off functionality, I found it on another forum somewhere...

The file you need to edit is /System/Library/Extensions/IOBluetoothFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/BroadcomUSBBluetoothHCIController.kext/Contents/Info.plist

e.g. #sudo vi /System/Library/Extensions/IOBluetoothFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/BroadcomUSBBluetoothHCIController.kext/Contents/Info.plist

In this file you should find the following...

<key>idProduct</key>
<integer>8448</integer>
<key>idVendor</key>
<integer>2652</integer>

Change the 8448 to 8449

Save the file then remove /System/Library/Extensions.mkext , then reboot.

e.g. #sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
#sudo reboot -n

In this "Info.plist" there are two recurrences of "8448".
I only changed the first recurrence (at line 41 of 280) and it works.

Probably it's completely equivalent... but I prefer to "sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions/" instead of deleting ".mkext" file.
At startup, OSX rebuilds ".mkext" file if Extensions/ directory has a more recent modification date.

Thanks!

... So I'd like to ask someone who has the ISO to diff it against this image and send me the patch. It should not be too large, right?

I was told that the PPF patch itself is 1.5GB. That just can't be right! That is more than some complete Leopard releases! The patch is only supposed to only include the difference from the original ISO, which can't be that much. Where am I mistaken?

PS: I'm successfully using the "old" version of SuperHai's VoodooPower called GenericCPUPowerManagement.kext or something similarly unpronounceable ;-) That one works for me without any problems.

Witch version is the "old" version? 1.1.0?
Is it the version that's on Superhai“s webpage?

toc: that is the fix i made already, but some of the bluetooth devices seems to be identifying istelf as dongle some internal, thats why it doesnt match for some people... i will include both ids replaced in my next patch so it should work just fine for everyone. also no need to delete mkext or touch as it will be automatically be updated...

sim sam sung: it can be as big as it can get mate depending on what you use!

the 1.5 gb ppf is a diff for jas original 10.5.4 to convert to 10.5.6 dvd... the 10.5.6 combo update already is 700mb in size plus other essential changes were done here and there (including exctracting original 1gb+ data out of the dvd and adding new ones)... which changes structure of the dvd already, thats why the diff is huge...

Thanks, I'll try that.

Tried the airport fix pkg too, and that didn't work, still says Third Party Card. Using a Dell 1390.

why people are obsessed with an info they dont even see when using the card... it is called third party bcoz it is not original airport card...

Borderline genius work Mysticus.

Is anyone else having issues with the Dell 1490 wireless card ?

My card actually works, but every time I boot up, I have to turn airport on by opening network prefs, selecting my network name from the drop down list, and then selecting 'apply'

The airport icon on the top right shows as if there is no signal, when there blatantly is plenty of signal.

In the system profiler, the airport card is showing as being turned off, when its on.

The card works, but its just a bit of a pain that it's not automatically on, and finding my network when I boot up.

Has anyone else experienced this at all ?

Well, I was wondering why there wasn't any complaint about the missing power-on tune angel.png
But I can understand that point a lil' bit... I think many people want to have a real OS X inside a Samsung body.
