Mysticus or any other non-noob folks posting here -
Has anyone tried using Taruga's HDA Patch as discussed elsewhere on the insanely mac forum to get full sound working on their NC10? Some have claimed that it even works for 10.5.5. I'm considering experimenting, but I'm still a noob myself and am worried about bricking my system.

Sorry if I ask this, but I guess my English isn't good enough to get it. I'd like to buy a NC10 German Edition.

Do I understand it correct that...

- USB works
- Wifi works now without replacing the card
- Bluetooth works
- Speaker works
- Headphone Jack works
melagodo
Everything correct, go and buy it goodhope smile.gif

How does the original internal wifi card work?

How does the Headphone jacket work?

I have installed the mysticus Iso but these things do not work.

I have to concur, so far as I'm aware:

* The stock Wifi card can be hacked into a semblance of working, but it's complex and certainly not user-friendly. For all intents and purposes, stock Wifi doesn't work.

* Although there's promise of a forthcoming driver (ported from a *BSD?), the current best (only?) audio option for the NC10 is the hacked AppleAzaliaAudio.kext, which provides working sound through the built-in speakers only. The headphone jack is not working, even with tools such as Audieee which have been able to poke the hardware the switch inputs on different netbooks with different audio codecs.

Please let me know if my understanding is incorrect.

A quick word on "Read the thread" posts: This thread is now over 50 pages long, and much knowledge is buried (lost?) within it. I've read every post, and even I can't remember the exact state of some things. Additionally, in this case, the parent poster was responding to an earlier message where it was claimed that the stock Wifi card and headphone jack do work - which I, at least, believe to be inaccurate. If all you're going to say is "Read the thread" then please refrain from doing so, in the process avoiding adding even more noise to the thread. Even a little context - "These are not working, read the thread for details" or "These are now working, please look around the 40th pages for more details" would be immensely helpful. At the very least, please ensure that you're not lambasting someone for correcting a previous miscomprehension.

Cheers,

Stuart

Andy,
Two things: 1. Can you tell us what system you're running (e.g., are you up to 10.5.6 and with which distro/install?); 2. Please keep us posted on how it goes in terms of battery, etc. If it improves the functioning then we'll all probably try it.

Voodoopower works fine for me.
I'm using a msiwindosx patched with Mysticus C*'s NC10 installier.

Hi goodhope

let me help out in german real quick:

* USB geht
* Damit WiFi geht, besorg Dir eine Dell WLAN Karte oder such auf eBay nach BCM4311. Die interne geht *manchmal* und nur mit ziemlich kruden workarounds. Lass besser die Finger davon.
* BT - die deutschen kommen ohne BT ... zumindest die alten (Dez 08)
* Lautsprecher: geht
* Kopfhörer - geht nicht mehr mit dem momentanen Treiber. Aber Hilfe ist unterwegs, sagt Mysticus.

I need help with EXT VGA. If I select Mirror mode (clone desktop) I had very bad artifact with the latest package... The old package was good with this option... Why? How I can fix the problem?

Thanks
giliathstod
@Leonardo
I had the same problem.
Solution:
go with the mouse on the monitor
Then plugin the external monitor. You won´t be able to see anything but go down with the mouse a bit an klick.
You will need some try´s.
I think disable clone mode is the second task.

(clone desktop isn´t possible at the moment)

@giliathstod

hmm... with old Mysticus 's package (1.0) clone worked... but I have update and now I haven't old package in my nc10 sad.gif

I understand your point, but, it's not about i'm or someone else is too tired in answering already answered questions. First, everyone can use at least google and type "insanelymac nc10 + problem/question". By this way you will find the answer. If we don't stop answering answered questions, people won't stop asking these questions. And yes, this thread is over 56 pages now. But I guess, we could have saved at least 5 pages if there weren't theres already answered questions. Sometimes I think many people don't know how to use a forum.

Jay zee,

please don't write in other languages than english. This is an english thread and it's hard for the others who just speak english to follow answers in foreign languages. Don't get me wrong as I'm german, too. I often thought when writing with another german guy here that it would be much easier writing in german. But it's really hard for nearly all other members to follow your post, even if it's just the answer for one specific person. In this case, please use private messages or start a german thread.

Hi everyone,

first of all thanks to Mysticus and everyone who contributed to this thread, really resourceful reading. Especially the guide is really fantastic. but, it seems that I'm doomed nevertheless...
I don't know why but after installing the patched iso retrieved via http using the ddmac method I can't start OSX.
I've got no problem whatsoever during the installation. everything is set up according the userguide.
the boout hang up with the white screen and apple logo. the rotating thingy (can't find a better name...) under the logo keeps on turning but nothing happen.
I tried booting using -v it seems that the booting process stop after the local name not found messages

CheckList:
EDB enabled in my bios
MD5 checked
tried as well by doing the DVD method, same results
Tried with or without usb mouse and keyboard hooked up, same results

My Configuration :
BLACK UK NC10
NC10_JaS.OSx86.10.5.6.Intel.SSE2.SSE3_Mysticus
BIOS 03CA
1390 wifi card
500Gb Western digital HD

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm getting crazy...

Did you try to boot into XP already?

Also you can try to boot into the samsung recovery solution. Press F4 while the blue samsung screen at start up shows up. After boot into recovery is done, just quit and restart into osx.

Did you check the MD5 of the ISO?

Headphone to speaker switching works on the NC10 via the switch.ch scripts that are floating around on the net. The MSI Wind version does not work b/c the Device IDs needed to be modified. I have the simple Sound Switch application working perfectly on my NC10 -- same as it was on my previous Wind. Audieee could probably be made to work with the same type of DeviceID changes, but that is not my area of expertise.

I am more than happy to wait for the Voodoo kext to be tested and released.

very greatful for Mysticus for all his effort, this is a brilliant guide here. I have just received my nc10 and would loved to start installing osx straight away. Sadly, the iso is not available anymore, only on shrangle, for which I am reluctant to pay. If some kind soul could let me know how to get the image, it would be very much appreciated. Could you possibly post the switch.sh which works for you, or where you got it from?

From the looks of it, switch.sh (and Audieee) auto-detects the correct device, but the actual sequences sent to the hardware to make the changes are hard-coded and likely codec-specific. Therefore, all that's probably required are the 'send-verb' lines.

Hi everybody!
First of all, I want to thank Mysticus for the great job done!

Here's my starting setup:
- black NC10 UK edition (I found surprisingly that it's sold also here in Italy by Pixmania at 360 Euro; the Italian version is available only in white or blue; I prefer to have a more programmer-friendly keyboard rather than the Italian keyboard, and the black color looks more "professional").
- internal wifi card replaced with a Broadcom Wireless DELL DW 1490 (to install the XP driver I simply connected the Ethernet LAN to Internet and then I ran the hardware setup wizard in Win)
- RAM upgraded to 2GB
- latest BIOS (04CA), default setup except EBD enabled
- only two partitions: 30GB NTFS for XP, the rest for MacOSX (I removed all the rest, including partitions for restore... ). To do that I had to completely restore XP using Samsung disks.

I have been able to install Leopard 10.5.6 with an external USB2 DVD reader using the original JaS 10.5.4 DVD patched with JAS_to_NC10-10.5.6.ppf patch. I preferred to avoid the ddmac method to save some space on HD. The installation didn't take long anyway.

After installation:
- configured Quicksilver (already available in /Applications) as described in Mysticus guide, to enable brightness keys
- installed Brightness_Icon_Update_for_10.5.6_.pkg to have better looking icons smile.gif
- installed uk_keyboard_layout_fix.pkg (almost all keys are mapped correctly: Alt & Alt Gr = Command; 'Windows logo' key = Option; Ctrl = Ctrl smile.gif ; Fn not mapped?; the 'Menu' key is mapped to something, but I don't know what; the "|\" key next to the right shift isn't mapped but the same functionality is achieved with the top-left key below ESC "`|"; F1 to F12 work properly, and can be possibly remapped in System Preferences / Keyboard & Mouse / Keyboard Shortcuts)
- the trackpad panel didn't show up in System Preferences, so I had to install trackpadfull.pkg (it's weird that the two directories "/System/Library/PreferencePanes/Trackpad.prefPane" and "/System/Library/PreferencePanes/Trackpad.prefPane.old" (original, before pkg installation) have the same content... blink.gif but it worked...)
- installed all available software updates: iTunes, AirPort Util, Safari, QuickTime, Java Update, Front Row Update, QuickTime H264 Update.
- CHUD 4.6.1 seems to be already installed, if you use this NC10 10.5.6 DVD release.
- audio: internal microphone doesn't work, internal speakers work, the rest I didn't check.
- as expected... sleep works in battery mode; while in power supply mode the computer wakes up spontaneously after few seconds of sleep; to shutdown/sleep you have to use the power button, lid open/close is not detected; Ethernet LAN doesn't work.
- AirPort: perfect (with Dell DW 1490).
- Bluetooth works.
- Memory card reader: didn't try.
- External monitor: didn't try.
- small issue: brightness setting isn't 'remembered' after sleep or reboot.
- if you want to "recover" few vertical pixels hiding the menu bar, I recommend 'PresentYourApps', that works especially well with Firefox.

Now I have a few questions:
- is it possible to disable the trackpad when you use a mouse? I selected the checkbox "Ignore trackpad when mouse is present" in the Trackpad preference panel, but it has no effect.
- the trackpad vertical sensitivity is much higher than the horizontal. Is it possible to change it so have a more "symmetric" response? Which files could be tweaked to get this?

And finally here are the Geekbench results:

- small issue: brightness setting isn't 'remembered' after sleep or reboot.

Please follow the instructions to get the adjusted brightness level after sleep or reboot:

1. You will need to install Sleep Watcher
http://www.macupdate.com/download.php/1038...tcher_2.0.5.dmg

When sleep watcher installs it creates a couple of new files in your /etc directory
rc.sleep
rc.wakeup

2. Set wake up and sleep commands
you will need to edit /etc/rc.sleep file

go to the end of the file. Add a return or two for blank space and add the following lines.

reggie_se -D PCI -i 16 -r -a 0xF4 -B 32 2>&1 | grep 'Offset' | cut -d 'x' -f 3 | cut -d ' ' -f 1 > /etc/last_brightness

(Change 16 to be your PCI number.)

Save your file

Next edit the wakeup file
/etc/rc.wakeup

again, go to the end of the file and add a few blank lines and add:

BRN=$(cat /etc/last_brightness)
reggie_se -D PCI -i 16 -w 0x$BRN -a 0xF4 -B 32

(Change 16 to be your PCI number.)

After that let the computer go to sleep and when it wakes up, the monitor will restore to it's previously saved brightness level. rolleyes.gif

I've tried using the associated numbers in the rtf file and it tells me that they the wrong passwords.

Just my 2p worth...

Brightness
========

I tried this solution (with the difference that I called the /Library/Scripts/Brightness/change_brightness script), every time I put my NC10 to sleep it writes the value 255 (even though I have manually set the value to 30). Strange thing is that sometimes when I wake up the NC10 the brightness has been set to 25, this is the case even when I manually change the rc.wakeup script to set the brightness to 30.

It seems to me that the timing of this being called as the system is preparing to go to sleep might be causing this?

Sleep on AC
=========

From what I can tell, a (internal) USB device is causing the NC10 to wake up from sleep when on AC, it might be something to do with the USB devices being allowed to wake the computer from sleep on AC. I wonder if there is some way we could disable the usb controller(s) through a unix script and we could call this when the NC10 sleeps and enable the controller(s) again when it wakes up. I know the proper way would be to fix the DSDT functions but I just don't have the experience to attempt this. Same goes for the fact that the brightness backlight control functions are missing from the DSDT. I'm pretty sure these could be added in (I imagine the registers / IO would be the same as the reggie_se command line parameters)

Sleep on Lid Close
==============

You can use the Clamshell.kext (I think that is the correct name) to put the NC10 to sleep when you close the lid, it doesnt wake when you open the lid again though....not sure if this can be fixed (I'll need to look when I go home)

Bluetooth On/Off
=============

I noticed when I first installed OSx that the option to turn Bluetooth On/Off was greyed out in the menu, and also if you booted with a Bluetooth device connect then it would cause Bluetooh to turn off. For anyone else having this problem, both issues can be fixed by editing the Info.plist file in the Bluetooth Kext. I can dig out the change when I get home if anyone is interested.

I used the one from superhai as far as I can remember, just need to figure out how to wake when the lid is opened, but I notice the source is included on that page so it would be possible to tweak the code. I'm no low-level coder but I'm going to have a look at this when I finish work.

Did you try "4all"?

Many thanks SiM SaM SunG - That did the trick

Where was that info originally ? I trawled through about 40 pages of this thread looking for it.

Thanks anyway. biggrin.gif
SiM SaM SunG
It was on the iso's thread on that demonic torrent-tracker site. And from what I have gathered, that was exactly the reason why it was removed from there: Had mboto included a txt file with the password in the torrent, it would not have been removed.

I have unfortunately not seen the torrent, it is also possible that the password was included in it, in that case I have absolutely no idea why it was removed...

...And it would be soooo wonderful if someone could republish and seed it again!

Hello,

I actually went through most of the 57 pages of this forums, (the trick is to use firefox with the autopager add on, then keep scrolling down till all 57 pages appear at once, then press ctrl + f, and do a keyword search). Anyway, even though i've looked i cant seem to find a solid answer for these questions:

1)
On the NC10 if you press Fn + F8 while in XP, you can switch from Silent to Normal to Speed mode. what happens when your press this key combination using OSX?

2)
I know that apple doesnt support the Atom processor, so SpeedStep is not supported by default. This causes the processor to run at 1.6 Ghz the whole time. Is there a way to change this? is a solution on the way?

3)
Wouldn't having the processor constantly running at 1.6 Ghz make the battery run out faster? or am i mistaking.

I read tons of comments on people running leopard and getting 4 or five hours of battery life. Could this be higher is the processor wasnt running at 1.6 Ghz all the time.

If im overlookig something, please let me know.

arsix.

@arsix

Fn + F8 does nothing on my NC10 in OSX.
I am running msiwindos86x + 10.5.6 update + Mysticus' fix + brightness + AzaliaAudio.
I also get 4-5 hours of battery, especially with the brightness turned down.

wow, nice trick. i never knew about autopager.

Is there a way to get speedstep working? I found this info (http://forums.msiwind.net/mac/experimental-intel-speedstep-kext-t2479.html.) about someone running this kext on their MSI WIND and they were able to select frequencies.

I imagine this kext would work correctly with the nc10, given that they are both very similar.

any thoughts?

thanks, autopager is the reason i stopped using Chrome and switched to Firefox. There are so many add ons, hopefully chrome will have features like this in the future.

I have a problem with the deskstop picture prefs getting turned off. I set it to random picture every 5, 10 or 15 min, and sometimes I restart and it is simple blue screen, i go to set it again and the settings are in. but I have to click on a picture to start it going again.

Bluetooth On/Off
=============

Paul

Is it possible to edit this post install ? Where do i find the Info.plist file?
Would like to disable bluetooth to try and eak out some battery life.
Thanks

Hi Paul,

thanks for sharing your experience. I'd be interested in your bluetooth "fix" as I've been cursed by this problem too. My solution so far was to use a small application called "blueutil" to switch the bluetooth on after booting up. It doesn't really switch bluetooth on/off I guess but just sets something which makes OS X think that the bluetooth module is now available.

Cheers,
Timo

sorry, i'm a complete noob here, i tried to read as many pages as i could. But i still don't understand. Do i first need to install mac os x thru windosx86 into my computer and then use this dvd file to upgrade or can i just run the 10.5.6 dvd from mbato's links straight from xp and it will install? and is the difference between mysticus's method and installing windosx86 just that it'll have 10.5.6 instead of 10.5.4 or does mysticus's nc10 dvd have kexts and stuff(no idea how kexts work yet) that already fix issues. I know it must be frustrating for u mysticus when u try to put things in as simple terms as possible and people like me still outnoob ur intentions lol.

Hi,

If I remember correctly this looks like the instructions I used to enable the bluetooth on/off functionality, I found it on another forum somewhere...

The file you need to edit is /System/Library/Extensions/IOBluetoothFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/BroadcomUSBBluetoothHCIController.kext/Contents/Info.plist

e.g. #sudo vi /System/Library/Extensions/IOBluetoothFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/BroadcomUSBBluetoothHCIController.kext/Contents/Info.plist

In this file you should find the following...

<key>idProduct</key>
<integer>8448</integer>
<key>idVendor</key>
<integer>2652</integer>

Change the 8448 to 8449

Save the file then remove /System/Library/Extensions.mkext , then reboot.

e.g. #sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
#sudo reboot -n

Hi everybody and again thanks Mysticus C for all of your efforts to make OSX on NC10 possible.

I am a recent owner of the Samsung NC10, bought at Dixons tax free at Heathrow airport.
I am a mac user so the first thing I did was to read along the web to find how to install leopard on the machine and I have reached this forum.
I have installed OSX using a Jas 10.5.4 patched with the PPF to the Samsung NC10 10.5.6 iso and then using the ddmac method illustrated in the MysticusC's guide.
The installation was straightforward and everything works as described.
But I have two major concerns:

- VGA out is not working for me:( This is one of the reason I have bought a netbook. I travel a lot and I give presentations at training events, conference. And I would like to use the VGA out of the Samsung NC10 to connect it to a video projector. Unluckly in my tests, trying to connect both to a 19 LCD monitor and a 32 LCD TV I have the same results: using the standard resolution, with no mirrorig mode, I see on the external monitor that the mode is not supported. Trying to mirror the displays and lowering down the resolution I have got both of the screens totally fuzzied. If I disconnect the vga cable, the main netbook screen restores.
I have read that VGA out was working. Maybe it was with 10.5.5 and stop working with 10.5.6? Is there any fix to this??? (reapplying kext from 10.5.5 or re-installing with a 10.5.5 patched ISO?) What is your experience with 10.5.6 and VGA out?

- the second one is related to bluetooth. Because I travel a lot, often I stay several hours on the planes. I would be nice to use the NC10 to watch some movie. But having the bluetooth on a plane, it's not a safety behaviour. Is there a way to switch off the bluetooth adapter?
I haven't still bought the WIFI replacement card, but in that case, I could also switch on/off this one, correct?

If both of this problem can't be fixed, I have to probably consider other options (do you know if the MSI Wind suffers of the same problems?)

Other minor concerns I have experienced so far:

- the netbook doesn't go sleeping just closing the lid: I need to press Fn+esc or select the option from the apple menu
- if I pair my samsung with my Macbook pro where I turned on Bluetooth internet sharing, I see that two network adapters Bluetooth Network and Bluetooth PAN need to be configured on my NC10. But going to network preferences I don't see any devices to configure. Additionally, the Bluetooth Setup Assistant can't be closed clicking on the Quit button and bluetooth stop working (both the menu bar icon becomes gray and discovery new devices not works anymore, even after restarting: at every boot a Bluetooth network request appears).
- At every boot, the message window that says Samsung NC10-10.5.6 volume cannot be reparaible and available with limited funcionality appears. It says it needs reformat. This is quite annoying
- touchpad vertical sensitivity is too high in comparizon to horizontal one.
- headphone is not working, but I have seen there is a script here that let me swich between internal speakers and this one that I will try soon.

Please let me know if there is any solution to the VGA out and bluetooth on issues, otherwise I will need to sell this nice blue baby.

Thank you in advance from italy

@rukawa-
There are many different "builds" out there for putting OSX on various non-Mac machinese: ideneb, Jas, windosx86, etc., and they all have various differences in terms of what they install (I can't tell you the details of those differences because I'm too much of a noob myself to know). Mysticus' guide uses the Jas 10.5.4 version in combination with Mac updates and various fixes he's developed (Thanks Mysticus!). If you follow his guide, then you need to download the Jas ISO, or there is a mysticus version of the Jas ISO specifically for the NC10 out there too - all of this is outlined in great detail in the guide. You should read it to understand these basic questions.

FYI - I, however, am running windosx86, 10.5.4, on my NC10. I then used the Mac combo update to 10.5.6, and ran Mysticus' fix to make the update work. I then followed the stuff after about page 105 of his guide to do various patches for brightness. I also had to install the AzaliaAudio.pkg in order to get sound back coming out of my speakers (still no internal mic, line in or line out though). No matter what, I strongly recommend reading the available in a link on the first post of this board before proceeding. It will answer a lot of questions.

thanks a lot djkwai!!!! am i right in this is what you did, you followed this:
ISO upgrade process:
a+ You copy files (10.5.6 combo update and your current iso) to your root partition
b+ You run the DVD upgrade installer package.
c+ Choose step 1 (copies necessary update files to a temp folder in the root)
d+ Choose step 2 (only ONE of the 6 sub options needs to be choosen. eg jas dvd 10.5.5 upgrade to 10.5.6) (Note: there are 3 options for ddmac, and 3 options for iso upgrade, only ONE should be chosen that you need-- DO NOT CHOOSE MORE THAN ONE)
e+ choose step 3 (deleting the temp folder)
f+ If you have done everything correctly, dvd upgrade will run some scripts (series of basically terminal commands, like a batch *.bat file in dos)

where you have installed windosx86 10.5.4 already. you boot up into os x and then u placed the combo update and windosx86( assuming the "current iso" in this case is windosx86?) into ur root drive and ran the dvd upgrade installer package?

i guess the most important part and the simplest part i dont understand is that are these upgrades for when ur alreadying running mac os x 10.5.4 or 10.5.5 and want to get into 10.5.6 or is it a full setup i can just install straight from xp and get into 10.5.6 without having installed osx yet. i'm assuming u have to have installed osx first so that u can run the dvd upgrade in the root(osx) drive? sorry for being so all over the place

Change the 8448 to 8449

Save the file then remove /System/Library/Extensions.mkext , then reboot.

This worked perfectly for me (after repairing permissions).
Thanks very much.
Any chance of incorporating this into a future build of the distro ?

cheers,

Matt
