Full Version: Problems installing MAC OS on Phenom
InsanelyMac Forum > OSx86 Project > OSx86 Installation > OSx86 10.5 (Leopard)
Misi
hi there, i'm new to this website and i want to install : Apple.Mac.OSX.Leopard.10.5.2.AMD.EFI- Zephyroth on my desktop:

- AMD Phenom 9950 X4 Black Edition 140W - (has SSE4a too)
- MSI DKA790GX - AMD 790GX , SB750
- OCZ Platinum 2*2GB 1000MHz
- Asus Geforce 8600GT Silencer 512 DDR3
- Creative Labs X-Fi Xtreme Audio
- Western Digital SATA2

* if, hopefully, someone will try to help me i can get the S/N and Rev from all my components

i've cheked the forum from this website and wiki.osx86project.org and i didn't find in HCL my motherboard (MSI)

i have 2 partitions :
C - NTFS with Vista x64 (~97GB)
D - Unpartition (~56GB)
after i boot the MAC OS X dvd and it askes me to enter the command -v or to press Enter it restarts (help !)

is there a MAC OS X 10.5 that's supports X64 platform ?

thx
Misi
no one is trying to help the newbies anymore sad.gif

Hey,

Phenoms CANNOT USE PC-EFI which is what zephyroth 10.5.2 uses. Instead grab either the 10.5.1 zephyroth uses, or get the lawlessPC release (which is a zephyroth release without PC-EFI)

I'm not sure but i believe that you can use chameleon with phenom but you would have to check on that

Good luck

thx man, you ar the first to reply

i found a second version of Zephyroth Leopard AMD 10.5.2 Rev.2 and it has EFI v.8 more info so does it mean is uses PC-EFI ?

my processor is SSE4a, is this a good thing ? biggrin.gif

edit : i think i found something
QUOTE
1. Install Zeph's OS X 10.5.1 (there is no instant reboot problem with this install DVD on Phenom, all other install DVDs will reboot on boot)

1.1. If you have "waiting for root device" message on boot, you need to add chipsets ext to install DVD, this is can been done easy with Transmac under Windows. Just download chipsets kext, copy it to Extensions folder on ISO (using Transmac) and burn new install DVD. Boot DVD with "-f -v" flags.

1.2 If you have "blinking cursor" problem on boot of installed OS X, here is the solution http://osx86.wikidot.com/known-issues#toc3

2. Update to 10.5.2 using "10.5.2 Update for AMD only, eddie11c".

3. Install Apple Graphics Update

4. Install drivers (video, audio) (kext helper is a good tool, if something goes wrong you can delete trouble kext from Windows using Transmac or just boot with -s flag, do as sayed on screen and with help of unix commands (rm (remove), cp (copy), ls(list current dir), cd (change directory)) fix problem from shell)

5. Update kernel to latest (using Kalyway all kernels package)

6. Fix rosetta (if games and some apps are crashing on start) (Solution taken from here http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...1260&st=0#)

6.1. Download this file: http://rapidshare.com/files/96033590/oah.zip.html

6.2. As root, move /usr/libexec/oah directory somewhere safe for backup
sudo -s
cd /usr/libexec
cp -R oah oah.bak

6.3. Copy the downloaded file into /usr/libexec/
rm -rf /usr/libexec/oah
cp -R ~/Downloads/oah

Yes PC-EFI is EFI v.8

These Leopard distro's have PC-EFI

Zephyroth 10.5.2 AMD EFI
Kalyway 10.5.2 AMD_INTEL
Leo4allv3
iATKOS v2.0i

There are patches available for all these "except the zeph release" that will allow you to run them on phenoms (Google "Chameleon Bootloader")

SSE4a doesn't affect the MacOS installation, but since you have to have SSE3 to have SSE4 then yes.

You could follow that long process that deals w/ upgrading from 10.5.1 OR you can just download one of these distro's who either don't have PC-EFI

iDeneb v1.1 10.5.4
iDeneb v1.3 10.5.5
LawlessPPC 10.5.4
Leo4allv4.1

These releases are already at 10.5.4 (or 10.5.5) and have many drivers which you can install. To update to 10.5.5 just google "Zephyroths AMD Software Updater" and update using that

do i install Chameleon Bootloader on Vista or i have to add it to my mac install disk ?

is there a MAC OS X on 64 bit ?

Edit :
i found iDeneb v1.3 10.5.5 Leopard OSx86 : link "The boot is provided by Chameleon " has the Chameleon Bootloader installed

Try changing the SATA type in your bios settings from IDE to AHCI and tell me what happens.

EDIT: did you install it yet? or is this just when you put the cd in to install??

LBA/ Large Mode - On/Off or Auto
DMA Mode - Auto/more then 10 options
Hard disk S.M.A.R.T. - Auto/Disable/Enabled

EDIT2: i just want to say that my second partition is Unallocated(on my first partition i have Vista x64)
do i need to make it FAT32 - Primary Partiton ?

ahci mode (true sata mode) should be in the options, maybe not called like this, somewhere at sata options (native, ide mode ...). but be aware that switching to ahci may cause problems with windows
as it may lack drivers for this. but there is a thread with the solution for that.

you can format the partition in fat32, but i gather that your hdd as a whole is not recognized..

i'm sorry, this is may bad
i found in BIOS>Integrated Peripherics>On-Chip ATA Devices:
* PCI IDE BusMaster Enable/Disabled
* On-Chip SATA Controller - Enable/Disabled
* RAID Mode - IDE/RAID/AHCI

first time i tryed it was on IDE, now (5 minutes ago) i changed to AHCI
here ar the results:

does that Firewire (IEEE 1394) has anything to do with it (i can disabled it in BIOS) ?
should i activate the S.M.A.R.T. option ?
Abda92
I don't think firewire has anything to do with it... and neither does your Phenom CPU, cuz I have one too (9950 BE). But it looks like your problem is with your SATA chipset..

I have an nForce 560 SLI (my motherboard's ASUS) and I had none of these problems before installing. After installation, I got the same error but changing from IDE mode to AHCI mode fixed my problem, but of course my windows didn't boot..
Then I realized that my DVD drive wasn't working either (it was IDE). It turned out none of my IDE HDD/DVD were working (that's why both my DVD drive and my SATA HDD wasn't working when under IDE mode).

After searching google for some time, I found the solution. I'm not sure why these kexts weren't copied during installation, but I just had to copy all ATA kexts from my installation DVD to my HDD, and now my DVD drive works, and my SATA HDD is back under IDE mode.

do you think it will work if i would try to install from a SATA dvd drive ?
Abda92
After installing and successfully starting OSX with AHCI mode (so basically everything was good except that my DVD drive wasn't working and I'd need to switch back to IDE to start Windows XP), I used the installation DVD to boot, and when the installer started used Terminal to copy the ATA kexts from the DVD to my local Leopard installation. The comman was something like:

cp /Volumes/DVD_NAME/System/Library/Extensions/*ATA* /Volumes/Local_HDD/System/Library/Extensions

Of course I needed to fix the permissions and delete the cache too...

After doing that, I was able to boot in IDE mode and my DVD drive worked fine.

However, I downloaded and burnt an iDeneb ISO and tried installing, but I got the same error as you (Still waiting for root device). But I didn't try doing much because my ISO's md5 hash didn't match the readme (not before or after patching it for the nForce chipset - which I happen to have).

I'm now downloading another ISO, but it'll take at least a day to finish...

And about installing from a SATA DVD drive.. I'm no expert, but there's a big possibility that it'll fix it. So if you could find a SATA DVD drive try it, but I don't think it's worth buying one since we're not sure it'll help.

I'll keep you updated (and send me a pm if I don't update in a few days because I have exams and I might forget..)
Abda92
The file finally finished downloading so I patched it, verified the md5hash was right, and burnt it. Sadly, I got the same error. I tried changing the SATA config to IDE, RAID, and AHCI but nothing worked.
I'll search about it more when I'm free because I'm busy at the moment. Keep me updated with what you tried and if anything works, and I'll do the same.

OK that's alright.

I tried booting the patched iDeneb DVD on my old PC and it booted biggrin.gif
But I don't know too many details about it.. I'm sure both the DVD drive and the HDD are IDE, but I don't know much about the motherboard.

I think our problem is with the SATA HDD not being recognized, not the DVD drive.

EDIT: I think it would be better if we both tried working on the same DVD distro. So maybe it would be better if you did download iDeneb v1.3. But the distro you already have did work with me - perfectly.
Abda92
Just got it to boot biggrin.gif
but the SATA HDD isn't found in the installer itself >_>

Basically what I did was inject some kexts into the install DVD, and after a few tries I finally got past that error and some others. Now we need to get the installer to actually detect the HDD...

i've tryed with a SATA dvd-rw and without any luck
so shoud i try ideanb?

I got it to work!!
It was a really long process with a lot of trial-and-error, so I might forget to mention something here and there.

1. Using Transmac on windows, I injected the iDeneb ISO with the Extensions.mkext of LawlessPPC's ISO (the one that worked before on my PC and made specifically for Phenom processors).
2. Boot from DVD, and wait for installer to start.
3. Using disk utility in Installer, format the partition.
4. Right before installation starts, click on Customize. Under patches, select AMD patch (or something like that).
5. Now, for the kernel.. I tried installing with the default kernel (I think it's Vanilla), but my system kept rebooting when booting OS X after installation was finished. I used the SSE3 kernel.
6. Choose any applications you want to install.
7. Start the installation, and after it's done restart and BOOT FROM DVD AGAIN.
8. When installer starts, open terminal and input the following lines:

cp -f /System/Library/Extensions.mkext /Volumes/"Your Leopard partition"/System/Library/
cd /Volumes/"Your Leopard partition"/System/Library/
rm -R -f Extensions
mkextunpack -a i386 -d ./Extensions/ Extensions.mkext
chown -R root:wheel Extensions
chmod -R 755 Extensions

9. Rebooted my system.

And everything worked fine biggrin.gif

I'd like to note however that my partitions all showed as folders. However they work fine so I'm guessing the icons are different for the different kernel.

now,
should i copy anything else besides Extensions.mkext ?
or couldn't i do the other way around ? like copy kext from ideneb to lawless ?

about patches for my motherboard, i heard that i can use the kext from the sb700 southbrige, does the disc include this kexts ?

Open the Lawless ISO, and copy Extensions.mkext from System/Library/ to anywhere on your PC. Then copy it over to the iDeneb ISO in the same directory, replacing the one already there. Note: if there's an Extensions folder in System/Library/ back it up somewhere and delete it.

Yea it should. But you should try with EITHER Extensions.mkext OR the Extensions folder..

If none of those worked, you've probably got a rough road ahead of you.

hey there, i manage to install MAC OS X biggrin.gif (lawless's version with some small changes - with this)
but now i have to fix some small things :
- only one core is working
- the frequency of my memory is 400 MHz instead of 1000MHz
- i don't know what to do with my audio card (Creative Labs X-Fi Xtreme Audio) i don't want to use my on-board audio card and i saw on infinite mac forum in lawless's signature : Sound Card:- SoundBlaster Live!
- (AMD Phenom 9950 BLACK EDITION Agena 2.6GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 2MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 140W Quad-Core Processor) and here it says L2 Cache: 512 KB and BUS speed it says : 200 MHz
- i have a 5 button mouse but the side buttons ar working like the scroll button, can i use the buttons to work as back/foreward ?
- i can't see my IDE dvd-rw drive (can i enter MAC OS in IDE mode, not AHCI ?)
- if i'm not using my dvd install disc i can't enter MAC OS (boot error)
- i can't seem to open most of my videos ar there any codecs( i tryed with vlc) ?
- where can i see some info about my motherboard?
* updates ar working(there downloading right now (10.5.6 dev.gif ))
* both network adapters work : wireless and normal
if i forgot anything please tell me
thx smile.gif

EDIT : my mac crashed after i installed all the updates sad.gif
Abda92
Yea I was gonna tell you not to update. You can install any update except 10.x.x updates..
- Core, I thought the same. But it turns out that OS X's utilities think so while others will detect all 4 (and show that they're all working).
- Mouse, try searching for some drivers on the manufacturer's website. You'll probably need to connect it using USB and not PS/2.
- DVD, start installer from DVD and copy all ATA kexts from DVD to local HDD (e.g. in terminal, type "cp -f -r /Volumes/DVD_image/System/Library/Extensions/*ATA* /Volumes/Local_HDD/System/Library/Extensions/". Of course, don't forget to fix the permissions and remove the mkext cache)
- Videos, problem is probably with the Graphics Card. Try xBench and make sure OpenGL and other graphics *thingees* are working well.

QUOTE(How to: Setup SB600 Windows XP AHCI driver - by Martin953)
For those of as with AMD SB600 south bridge OSx86 is easier to setup, when SATA controller is in AHCI mode (the installer sees all SATA HDD's and you can partition and choose any as install location)
But if you wanna dual boot with Windows XP (like I am) and have previously installed XP with SATA controller in IDE mode - it's like pain in the @$ - you have to enter BIOS setup each time you want to switch OSes and change SATA controller mode from AHCI to IDE or vise versa.
So I dig and have found a nice and easy solution:

1.Boot XP in IDE mode.
2.Copy "ahci8086.sys" file from attached driver package to "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers".
3.Right-click on "AHCI-InstallXP32.reg" file and choose Merge
