I have a P5K-SE mobo. Leopard was installed with the retail DVD. Initially I had a a PCI firewire card (with a VIA controller). The system recognized it, but I was never able to use it since everytime I tried to connect something via firewire (a MiniDV camera), the firewire controller was disappearing from the hardware profile (?). I swapped the card with a PCI-Express firewire card (with a Texas Instruments controller) and worked like a charm.

This is what it worked for me:
PCI-Express 1394a Card

I cannot clearly state if the problem was the controller (VIA or TI) or the usage of a PCI-Express instead of PCI card. But I believe it is safe enough to buy a PCI-express card with the TI controller on it. Additionally make sure that the card is compatible with MAC OS X.

I have big issues with firewire on hackintosh.
I had this issues under Leopard and also in Snow Leo.
The onboard firewire device is showing in profiler under firewire, so it's ok but that's not the hole truth....
This is my problem: I have a Echo Audiofire 4 and this soundcard is recognizing by the System but I always have some
glitches and sound issues.
And with soundcard plugged booting is delayed for more than 15 sec's or more....
This error is now showing while booting in Snow: "FireWire runtime power conservation disabled. (2)"
And in LEOPARD it was this error: "FireWire unable to determine security-mode; defaulting to to full-secure"

So I tried to find a solution....
I bought a firewire-Express card for more than 50 EUR but I have the same issues......

So can you please check if you get one of this error's while booting?

Hope to fix this issue......

Thanks
