NOTE: This is currently a not tested beta project which is why I need beta testers. Please make sure you have a backup of your data, and to be safe do not use it on your primary install

What I basically need is beta testers that own 9800GTX cards and are willing to install Leopard OSx86 to test out this installer. This installer is based on aqua-mac's procedure for getting the 9800GTX card working on OSx86 here. This installer basically automates the entire process, run the installer, reboot and your 9800GTX should be fully working. It uses aqua-mac's original set of replacements kexts and modified NVinject for 9800GTX. I cannot test this installer myself, as I do not have a 9800GTX to test it with, which is why I am asking that others who do have the card test it so I can finalize it and make a stable release. I have made everything as safe as possible, all the permissions have been set right, and backups are automatically made in case something goes wrong.

Download the installer ZIP (21.3MB) here. All I ask that if you test it, whether you are successful or not, please post here saying what worked/what didn't/any improvements that could have been made. If enough people chime in, then this will be finalized so it can be used without worry!

Thanks!
~pcwiz
I does a *BUMP* tongue.gif C'mon, anyone interested? I finished the installer yesterday and its up for download...

Downloaded and tested. Card recognized but Q/E reading as not supported. Tried GFX Strings method but shows white menus bug. Any suggestion?

PD\ By the way, nice idea, the installer runs flawless. Good Job! wink.gif
~pcwiz
Thank you both a lot for testing! The first thing that needs to happen is, while it could be the fault of the installer, we don't know for sure. So for both of your, what I suggest is that you try aqua-mac's MANUAL method of getting it working and see if it works. If you get the same result doing it manually then its probably not a problem with the installer smile.gif

Thank you very much!

P.S. alexlyc, yes it is using all the ORIGINAL files from Aqua Mac's package. Nothing has been modified, its all just been combined into one easy installer.

BTW: You MUST have the 10.5.2 update and Leo Graphics Update installed for this to work. I forgot to add this note in the important information screen of the installer but just make sure
macbrush
I tried, and no QE/CI. But then my setup somehow requires Gfxstring to work at the first place anyway. Let me know if i can help further.

Thanks for the effort.
~pcwiz
Hmm...maybe I will add a GFX string option to the installer smile.gif

So you get the same results with the installer and when you are doing it manually with aquamacs instructions?

Thank You
I will get to work on adding the GFX string option

EDIT: OK I'm done making the GFX option. Too late today, I'll post up the new beta tomorrow. It uses the com.apple.Boot.plist file with the hex string that aqua mac posted on the other thread. Here is a screenshot to get you goin' tongue.gif

At last!!! After 1 day and a half of try and fail tests, finally it works biggrin.gif (Fully recognized + Q/E Enabled)
I'm using Kalyway 10.5.2 ISO and there are thingies that maybe result useful:
- Download and install the Leopard Graphics Update (just to be sure)
- Delete any nvidia and related kexts.
- Use the installer (i was installing the kexts with kexthelper and finally realize that 1 or more kexts were not installed succesfully)
- Do the GFX Strings procedure (try to not change the card's name)
- Search and delete any trace of NVInject and Natit (leave the nvidia kexts alone)
- Repair permissions, rebuild cache, reboot and cross your fingers.

Good Luck!

PD\ Nice job pcwiz!
~pcwiz
Yeah, I'm making an upgraded version of the installer that includes the GFX string installation (as seen in screenshot above) and it automatically does all that, deleting NVinject/Natit, deleting kext caches and repairing permissions, etc. So by the time this installer is finalized all that will be automated smile.gif

Hi pcwiz,

You may like to add the following Strings that I made to your installer.
wahwahman89
Whoa... Bloody well done on your effort dude. I thought 9xxx support wasn't coming until Apple did their bit.
Sweet! I guess it'll soon be time to upgrade from my 8800GT :-)
klexen
This doesn't give me the Hardware Acceleration or Q/E. I have tried deleting the NVinject/Natit. But that doesn't work. I did my gfxstrings, still no go. Any ideas? I have an Asus Maximus Formula x38.
~pcwiz
Sure thing aqua-mac. A couple things though. PackageMaker is giving me terrible trouble, it produces a result 150MB file and even sometimes a 600MB package file when the size is supposed to be around 22MB. Dunno why its happening, trying to fix it.
Redliner
you all beat Apple to it! Congrats! Can I get some xbench results for the graphics tests?

(Quartz Graphics test, openGL, & User interface) here is my curent result from an 8600GT 256mb GDDR3 card OC'd to 680Mhz

I got a 218.13
~pcwiz
PackageMaker is driving me COMPLETELY NUTS. It keeps producing a 277MB package file when its supposed to be around 25 megs.

Anyone know what I should do?
sirwilliam
are any of you using an EVGA 780i motherboard? I get a pretty long pci root value and Aqua Mac said it seemed sorta wrong. It is 3 way sli motherboard, so would that mean I would have extra pci information?
cedriclv
Hey,

I managed to install the driver however as others have said there seems to be no hardware acceleration.

Its a great start though!
scalar
Ok I'm getting an evga 9800GTX, will check in as soon as it arrives to work on this. I'll need to get full accelleration working for Logic 8 to be happy...
~pcwiz
I am currently having annoying problems with PackageMaker, but I have the package made with the GFX string. Trying to solve this problem...
~pcwiz
Yeah, you need a GFX string most of the time to get it to work. I have everything prepared but I can't get the stupid PackageMaker to build it properly mad.gif
teknojunkie
~pcwiz its pretty funny how people will just ignore the help you need and just want the package, strange the packet makes it a bigger filesize

hopefully this will help

Thanks amanteboy08. I read that article earlier, but it doesn't seem to directly imply to my problem. I was researching this back some time ago but I couldn't find anything relevant sad.gif

Thanks for trying though
jecowa
i just built first hackintosh. this installer allowed me to get further into World of Warcraft launch, but it still failed with the same error that i had before i installed your updates. "World of Warcraft was unable to start up 3D acceleration." Thank you for making geforce 9800 drivers. please make world of warcraft work, please. smile.gif
scalar
wound up using the manual strings method to get my 9800GTX working, and it works great!
liPpi
Hello,

good work! Maybe a bit "off topic" but ...
... do you need a beta tester for a GeForce 9600GT Installer? (MSI 9600GT 2048MB)? biggrin.gif
I think about buying a Shuttle with 9600GT or 8800GT ...
Is the 9600GT likely to be supported in the future by apple?

Thank you very much,
liPpi
~pcwiz
Everyone, I will get back on this ONCE PackageMaker starts behaving and stops creating 200-600MB files tongue.gif
nim0r
omg pcwiz please make it work.

i <3 you for making such a badass idea come to life. smile.gif
~pcwiz
I am trying again right now. Hopefully this time it will create a usable file dry.gif

EDIT: Its NOT working. I get a 533MB file now sad.gif

EDIT: I even redid the entire package. STILL the same problem. I have reason to believe that it is caused by one of the scripts....
TheWiiGuy
Well, the current installer is just about perfect even without QE. The problem is that I am getting weird screen artifacts. These appear in 10.5.2 and 10.5.3 but only with the 9800gtx driver installed. I'm pretty lost, any insight? I am also in no position in terms of know how to install PC-EFI and I'm pretty sure that means no GFX strings.

EDIT: Oddly I reinstalled Leopard without a previous cersion of nvinject and the installer worked flawlessly! CI/QE worked great!
Shine
any news about it ? hunger for it~~

EDIT: its worked for me,9600GSO 384MB on 10.5.2
your driver+GFX Strings
i was using NVinstaller V.41 without GFX Strings and it gives me white menu, now everything is OK!

i dont know if its your driver worked or the GFX Strings thing....but hey...it works now ~ smile.gif
abscheele
How do you install gfx strings?

sorry I'm a noob huh.gif

EDIT: Where would I find the gfx strings, I've looked but I cant find them
aqua-mac
Look here
abscheele
thanks aqua-mac
will those work with the 9600 GSO and the 9800 GTX?

thanks again,
Alec

EDIT: Which would I use for the 9600 GSO, because it has 384 mb's of ram and there are only 256 and 512 options.
aqua-mac
Yes it should work but you will need to edit the name of your card and the memory amount depending on how much memory your card has.
abscheele
thanks for the fast reply,

how would I change the name and the amount of ram for the card?

thanks,
Alec
aqua-mac
Let me know how much memory your card has and I will do it.
abscheele
It is a 9600 GSO and it has 384mbs of ram

thanks,
Alec
aqua-mac
You can try this - let me know if it reports the ram correctly. The instructions on what to do with it are here

EVGA 9800 GTS 512MB Superclockt.

Follow these instructions to the letter. You will need 10.5.3 minimum or 10.5.2 with my 10.5.4 kexts. What installation do you have?
tricade
i have 10.5.4 vanilla kernel // the install from post 1
aqua-mac
Did you repair your permissions correctly. You should download this file and run it. Leave it for a few minutes to work. Did you look in your extensions folder and delete nvinject or natit if they are there. Then follow my walkthrough.
tricade
ok ... iam a noob wink.gif so i run the setup of this post thats it ^^
aqua-mac
Follow this walkthrough here. Forget the installer, more people have had success with GFX strings with this card. Create your own GFX string by following my walkthrough, it is not difficult. If you run the part of the walkthrough where you find the PCI address of your card/motherboard, I can make the boot.plist for you. We need to find your cards PCI address, I cannot do that part for you as I do not have your hardware. Let me know what it is.

So did you delete natit and nvinject from your extensions folder? Download these kexts and then manually put them in your extensions folder. Then repair permissions with this. Leave it to run for a while.

Then go to System/Library and delete Extensions.mkext.

Then reboot.
tricade
So did you delete natit and nvinject from your extensions folder? -> NO
so first i must delete this files then ->
Download these kexts and than manually put them in your extensions folder. Then repair permissions with this. Leave it to run for a while.

There are 2x http://rapidshare.com/files/132285035/aqua..._files.zip.html ...

I can only download the nv files but no permission dl

thanks aqua mac, I'll try it and get back to you on wether it works

Hello. I've tested the installer and the installation went well. After the reboot my mouse locks at the top-left corner. I don't know exactly what I did but I managed to make the mouse move again, but when I tested the system with the OpenGL test tool, it was still using Apple Software Renderer (and getting <20fps in the cube test =/). Any ideas?

Has anyone else had stability or other problems in fullscreen applications using this or manual EFI strings?

Everything appears to be working normally on the desktop and in i.e. sketchup etc. But in several games (AoE3, TR:A etc.) there seems to be some problem with heat, fan and clocks which results in a hard lockup.

In Windows (with supported drivers) the card works fine in even higher clocks than in OS X where it overheats. Lowering the clocks then it just takes a little longer.

Suggestions or perhaps the 9800GTX isn't as compatible as it appears at first?

Edit: excl.gif See this post for more info concerning a BIOS flaw on some cards.
