I was upgrading my iPhone on my mac with the new iTunes and it didn't work. So I connected it to my PC with the new iTunes for windows and it worked without a problem. For some reason no matter what I did I could not restore the phone on the mac, just the PC.

I discovered the problem is likely to do with network inability to communicate with the Apple servers. Others have found that packet size might have something to do with it. Anyway, I've outlined a way to get around the problem here:
