I've looked at the HCL, read two different entries of people claiming that "everything works out of the box" with the Dimension 8400 and 10.5.1 from Kalyway. Well, everything is working except my sound. Now I'm sorry if I'm just another head ache here because I dont mean to be but isnt the point of the HCL to help people figure out what will work and what wont? I mean, BEFORE you install and then go running through the forums like an idiot asking stupid questions and trashing the place with 1000s of threads? I've been lurking around the boards for a while now reading everything I can find on the subject because I HATE bothering people with questions when there is so much information posted already. I can't fix this problem though with my onboard sound at all.

I've downloaded all the kext files, pkg files and everything else I can get my hands on at this point. I've tried everything there is to try so now I want to know just how these people have everything "working out of the box" with the Dimension 8400. I installed the drivers that were there during setup and of course they worked about as well as the rest of the stuff I've downloaded so far. If someone could please help me out here, it would be great. Again, I'm sorry to even bother you guys with this but I just cant find an answer anywhere. (not to mention the answer to the question "why do i have to use my DVD to boot and type 'mach_kernel rd=disk0s1' every freakin time I want to boot up OS X 10.5.1...................I've wasted the whole day reading the forums and still have found nothing more than that little command that only allows me to boot WITH the DVD. Would be nice to boot without like i did with the other releases.

Using Kalyway DVD

Dell Dimension 8400

NO SOUND

searched the whole forum/wiki without a fix

wiki claims that it should work with this PC without problems/patches

have to type "mach_kernel rd=disk0s1" with the DVD in the drive just to get 10.5.1 to boot

I had the same issues when I installed kalyway 10.5.1 DVD on my Dell 8400. The sound issue is relatively easy to fix: plug your speaker into the surround sound (black) connector; the line out (green) connector doesn't work. As for the boot issue, you may try to reinstall the os with efi mbr option. That did fix my problem for requiring the DVD to boot.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips man. I did in fact figure out the problem with the sound outputs after getting the onboard sound to actually work. The boot issue was exactly as you said, I didnt check the correct efi on install. I just wish that there was a FAQ around here with these known issues posted so that people like you and I didnt have to search through 200 page threads to find answers. Anyway, thanks again for the reply and good luck with your 8400, I hope it keeps running great for you.

The dimension 8400 seems to have an onboard sound card... Flip up the flap on the front, you might see it.
