Logitech has always had USB headsets that worked for sound right out of the box (at least since 10.4.8 to my knowledge). However, recently, they released a headset that is a traditional analog headset BUT it comes with a USB 'dongle' it plugs into to make it a digital headset. it used the standard speaker/headset plugin. I have had passive and powered speakers, stereo, 2.1 and 5.1 sound all plugged in and working great. I had a cheap set of speakers that gave some feedback, but I have had a variety of headphones and better quality speakers plugged in that have no problems. Below is a link to Best Buy's site for a description and a model number, various retail outfits carry this and you can catch it on sale for as little as $29.95 (which is what I paid).
No configuration changes or kext updates are necessary for it to work, plug it in, change it as the default output/input device in system preferences and you are all set!
