For those of us who either have Creative Labs on the desktop or an unsupported sound chip on our laptops, I found an easy and affordable solution.

Logitech has always had USB headsets that worked for sound right out of the box (at least since 10.4.8 to my knowledge). However, recently, they released a headset that is a traditional analog headset BUT it comes with a USB 'dongle' it plugs into to make it a digital headset. The good thing about it is (a) it is powered and (cool.gif it used the standard speaker/headset plugin. I have had passive and powered speakers, stereo, 2.1 and 5.1 sound all plugged in and working great. I had a cheap set of speakers that gave some feedback, but I have had a variety of headphones and better quality speakers plugged in that have no problems.

Below is a link to Best Buy's site for a description and a model number, various retail outfits carry this and you can catch it on sale for as little as $29.95 (which is what I paid).

No configuration changes or kext updates are necessary for it to work, plug it in, change it as the default output/input device in system preferences and you are all set!

I bought this one at Fry's on Saturday to see if it worked. OS X detected it just fine and I was able to select it for input/output. However I still didn't get any sound. The volume meter said that the input was working though:

Upon further research, it seems that the Creative X-Fi USB 5.1 is a VERY good USB adapter and works OOB. I just ordered it from Amazon with 1 day shipping, so I'll let you know what my experience is:
