Installing Leopard on an iBook G4 from a FW HDD, "'BaseSystem' couldn't be verified"

I tried restoring the Leopard DVD (the complete one) to an external harddrive (firewire), and booting from it went fine. However, it quit pretty much immediately when the installation process should've begun, saying that the 'BaseSystem' package couldn't be verified. Other times it would boot with the error log showing immediately with a lot of errors.

Some people claim this is due to a faulty memory stick. The iBook only has 256 + 256 MB RAM though, so if I removed one it still wouldn't install (it checks if the computer has 512 MB RAM, right?).

Is there any way to solve this?
