Okay, I am going to school here shortly for graphic and design and my first thought was i shall get a mac book pro on that thought heres some of my questions - do i wait for leopard? can i get a tiger disc from apple for this machine if leo has already been released? oh and speaking of leopard is there a good way to remove the hideous transparent bar and get different indicators in the dock or for that matter the tiger dock?
this would be my first mac thats why i am being skeptical.

Or i have also been looking at configing a dell inspiron 1750 (has 17" screen & keypad i like, lawl) as even with the 200 dollar school discount from apple the dell is still 200 dollars cheaper. i guess my last quesiton is, is this going to be hackintosh compatible? will need 100% compatible.

Heres the specs
PROCESSOR Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7300 (2.0GHz/800Mhz FSB/4MB cache)
DISPLAY Anti-glare, widescreen 17.0 inch display (1440 x 900
VIDEO CARD 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT
MEMORY 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
HARD DRIVE Size: 160GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
OPTICAL DRIVE CD / DVD writer (DVD+/-RW Drive)
WIRELESS NETWORK CARDS Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Mini-Card or Intel® 3945 802.11a/g Mini-card
BATTERY OPTIONS 56Whr Lithium Ion Battery (6 cell)
SOUND OPTIONS High Definition Audio 2.0

Thanks in Advance for the help and suggestions.

if you don`t like leopard or something, than don`t wait for it.
you can use tiger for all graphic progs as well.

i don`t know about dells` compatibility,but i can tell that is a beast.
just upgrade hd if you can , 7200 rpm is much better in work, and in os performance as well.

my opinion, its all the same if u wait for leopard or wait for tiger... but i would reccommend u to buy a mbp anytime soon.. so u can get ur hands on a 10.4.10 tiger install DVD... cos if u want leopard, u can always get the install disk from the usual places within days it is released... guaranteed...

well, as for the transparent menubar, i ran 9a527 on my SR mbp, and i can say that its been replaced by a translucent silver greyish menubar which looks better... so bye bye to the transparent menubar... as for the dock, its quite cool and very eye candy.. cos it basically mirrors EVERYTHING... even the icons and text on my desktop are mirrored!! its faint, but its definitely noticable about the mirror effect..

anyway, i reccommend u go for it and get a mac... u wont regret.. btw, i'm in the design line too.. studying architecture... doing heavy graphic stuff and 3d visualisation stuff.. this baby never fail me..

yeh i agree i should get it before leo releases so i can have both cause i am not much of one to upgrade right away and in this case i like features but despise others. only thing holding me back is my bias against apple charging more when it is a simple os difference i dont like paying for names, if it werent for the 200 dollar student discount theres no way id get the mbp.

actually why in the world isnt the tiger mbp and other models install discs posted at the usual places? because i think ill be having to postpone until around november which leo will b out :/ sigh maybe someone could post it for me i guess.

The Dell comes out cheaper, becuse it's processor is 400Mhz slower than that of the MBP, doesn't have a backlit keyboard, and it's network adapter doesn't meet N standards, not to mention it looks like a tank. Personally, if you were doing graphic design, I would go with the MBP hands down.

That Dell will also never be 100% OS X compatible. It might be able to run OS X great with QE/CI, but that does't mean it's fully compatible, nor stable. Get the MBP, you won't regret it. Don't worry about Leopard, the menubar is fixed and looks alot better now.

And bluetooth not included. (extra)

Especially in a campus area, I would want the 802.11n

With the MBP you have have easy access to OS X and Windows, with the Dell you have easy access to Windows and possibly mostly functional OSx86 with some work. (But not guarantees now or in the future.)

If Leopard is released on time, you'll probably be covered under the Up-To-Date program

"everybody knows ipod mini is for girls" Borat. nanos are to small and its actually just a rebate that makes the nano free ($150 rebate) so id use that towards the new ipod if its an option.

It's actually a $200 rebate, but it ends on September 16th, so even if you do want Leopard, you'd be better off buying during the rebate if you're getting an iPod anyway. As a student you can get Leopard for $69. No need to wait months just for that if you're ready sooner. I'm not sure which MacBook Pro you're comparing to so I can't really compare all of the differences, but the Mac is faster at either 2.2 or 2.4GHz, so that alone can account for the $200 difference. The 17" Dell display also only has the resolution of the 15" MacBook display. If you're comparing to the 17" MacBook Pro, the Mac has a higher resolution in the low end display, and a much higher resolution in the high end (1680x1050 or 1920x1200 vs 1440x900). If you need 100% compatibility with MacOS, there is no way to get it other than getting a real Mac. Hackintoshes might work fine with one version, but not another. You can run into problems if there is software that requires a specific version of MacOS X that you might not be able to get right away on a Hackintosh. Even without the $200 educational discount, I'd get the MacBook Pro over the Dell without a second thought.
