Intel x38

This thread will discuss the future, soon-to-be released Intel chipset, x38. This will replace the P975 while the P35 (currently available) replaces the P965.

In this thread we will disucuss the possibilities of the x38 chipset with OSx86 and compatibilities (not yet). We can share and discuss the knowledge we have that will contribute to this community and the OSx86 future for Intel chipsets as well as the future official release of OS X Leopard for the hackint0sh. More to come...

QUOTE ('internets')
Intel officially announced the release date of the high end chipset named X38 Express being the 23th of September. According to motherboard manufacturers and vendors, mainboards centered on Intel's X38 chipset will be available starting in early September. The date announced by Intel is referring to reviews and performance numbers concerning the new chipset. According to the news site DailyTech, this situation is similar to the one encountered when the P35 Express mainboard chipset was launched as motherboards were available for sometime before Intel finally decided to officially announce the chipset's release. The X38 Express chipset is the new top of the line mainboard chipset for the Intel platform and it comes as the continuation of the Bearlake line of products that includes the G33 and the P35 Express chipsets. The older 975X Express chipset is targeted for replacement by the X38 Express as the 975X made its debut along side the Pentium D Presler processors and it shares a number of common elements with the older 945 and 955X Express chipset families.

The Intel X38 Express chipset comes with a number of new features as the introduction of the PCIe 2.0 standard to the LGA 775 based computing platform. The new PCIe standard offers greater data transfer bandwidth than the current PCIe standard as it eliminates the encoding /decoding overhead of the previous standard. The PCIe version 2.0 allows motherboards to reach a total of four gigatransfers per second. As the X38 Express supports dual full-speed PCIe x16 expansion slots, multi graphics cards setups are possible. The chipset surely supports the ATI CrossFire multi-GPU technology and while it may also offer support for NVIDIA's SLI Technology, this is only a rumor.

According to Intel's specifications, the X38 Express chipsets work only with DDR3 memory, but most motherboards manufacturers may include support for DDR2 as well in order to gain a bigger market share. Motherboards equipped with the new Intel chipsets will probably become available in a few weeks and some estimate that an entry level solution will sell for about $200, while higher end models may reach $300

Sorry I'm a little late to the party, but recently I've thought about installing OSx86 and I happen to have an Asus Maximus Formula.

As far as I understand, I need a few things:

An SATA DVD drive
A dedicated SATA hard drive for OSx86
*Need to enable AHCI in BIOS
*Disable JMicron Controller (for whenever i want to boot into OSx86)

*Are these absolutely necessary? I have two IDE DVD burners. I would just need to turn off the controller whenever I wanted to boot into OSx86, right?

And as for the install, I've gathered Vanilla kernel works, I need to check the A1988 (I think?) sound option, and possibly NVinject. I have an 8800 GTX. Will that cause any major issues?

I've read about the 4GB of RAM issue and how it was fixed by removing a certain kext, AppleVIAATA, then removing the extensions.kext file.

Is there anything else I'm missing? I would like to be able to write up a small installation guide for this motherboard for future reference.

Also, to update to 10.5.2, I'd need the kalyway combo update, yes?

Thank you for your time!

- Update to 10.5.2 via Devin's Guide, but if you have 10.5.2 Kalyway, make sure you have to new kernels to install as well.

- Ask user's that have this board since it's pretty popular, and widely-used in this community. Common steps: Install OSx86, partition drives, after installation, install kexts for your motherboard, update to 10.5.2, update kernels, etc...post-installation checks like sleep, restart...)

- You shouldn't worry about too much until you actually start, trust me, once you start, you'll learn quite a bit of new things. So try it first wink.gif Most of us had to go to several installs to get things perfect (maybe only the perfectionists)

- If your IDE issue still persists, get one of these IDE to SATA converters, they're really inexpensive these days. And performance-wise should not be much of a worry I can recall.

- Which 4GB of ram issue are you referring to? Reply with the specifics.

Enable ACPI 2.0 in the BIOS
Turn off Speedstep in the BIOS

You will not be able to install from an IDE drive, I treid many dozen times and failed, a SATA DVD is required for this board.

I read somewhere about people getting kernel panics when they have 4 GB of ram or greater.

Thanks for your reply! I need to buy an SATA dvd drive as well as a dedicated hard drive, but that's no biggie.

Anyone tried the 10.5.2 kalyway install?
After completed install, im left with no audio or networking support. All the fore mentioned files here are non existant on this disk im seeing. The sound isnt that big of a deal because i have a usb adapter that works fine but with networking, i've tried the marvel drivers as well as the yukon2 ones. Neither have worked.

I also get panics once i hit shut down but not with restart. blink.gif

I also have the asus maximus, my install went fine, my audio is working, at least the 3.5 port, I havent checked stereo or optical. when you say your network isnt working, are you referring to connecting to the internet, or setting up a local network? my internet connection works fine. I just followed team scream's bios settings and the options he discusses in this thread the only problems I am having is the system profiler isnt showing the correct info on my ram and processor specs, and i have the sleep/shutdown issue.

Thought I'd add in a little tidbit on the Gigabyte GA-EX38-DS4... I have it, I love it, I've OC'd a Q9300 (2.5 stock) to 3.0, everything is pretty stable and works except audio input (so far), and it's smokin' fast - geekbench @ 6583. Did the install with Leo4AllV3, there should be a complete list of my setup in my sig.

ASUS MAXIMUS x38 ON KALYWAY 10.5.2 QUICK GUIDE

What you will need/what i used:
SATA DVD Drive
Install disk of course
IDE/SATA Hard drive...i'd recommend sata.

First adjust your bios settings:
SATA Configuration: to AHCI from IDE
Cpu Configuration: disable intel speedstep
Then simply enable ACPI in the bios, i forget exactly where it is.
*not sure which of these is absolutely necessary, just what i used*

Boot off the disk, partition your drive GUID/Journalized.
Customize your install and these are the options i selected.
Chose to ignore the first two check boxes to speed up the install and went vanilla with the kernel:

Selected proper video drivers for my 8800 of course *your options may vary*:

For audio, i left what was selected, selected. I dont know which one out of this 3 it was but hey it works. Output only:

Network adapter i selected the marvel yukon and my necessary wireless options that i needed, optional for you on wireless:

Now install, and restart and your all set! No panics so far and system is snappy will post geekbench later. Good luck, i highly recommend this board. And if you didnt see an option in the pics, that means i didnt select to install it smile.gif

Geekbench was 5388, i think i can get it better if i send my processor to 3ghz...

Get the 1988b Rev 4 installer from here. My sound is working perfectly on the Asus P5E, which I'm pretty sure has the same sound card (or similiar) sound card.

Yes, I have it working. The only "problem" that I've had is that drives won't be detected on the IDE controlder (jMicron) or on the e-sata ports (again jMicron), UNLESS that particular controller is set to IDE mode. Other than that, works fantastic!

I just set-up my new computer on X38. The main OS is Windows 2k3.

01 Intel DX38BT (BIOS rev. 1782)
02 Intel Q9450
03 OCZ ReaperX 1333MHz
04 nVidia 8600GT by MSI 512MB
05 Adaptec SCSI Controllers 29320LPE & 2940AU
06 2x SCSI disks Fujitsu 74GB (for Windows)
07 SATA disk WD Raptor 74GB (for Mac)
08 IDE DVD-RWs Plextor 750A & Pioneer-Buffalo DVR-111L
09 USB ext. DVD-RW Plextor 608CU (should work under Mac)
10 SCSI CD-RW Yamaha CRW-F1 (should work under Mac)
11 Soundcard ESI Julia (should work under Mac)

Firewire, Infrared and on-board sound are disabled.

I'm new to Hackintosh and Mac OSX, but have good experience on FreeBSD.
Please, could you explain what exactly hackintosh image should I download by torrents or Usenet.

Is Kalyway 10.5.2 all right for beginning?
What drivers/kexts I need for on-board LAN?

BTW My SATA disk is bootable for Windows 2003 (C:\).

I recommend using the driver done by Taruga at http://wiki.taruga.net, however, the website appears to be down at the moment. If you just need audio out, you can use the Azalia 1988b for sound.

Edit: Since Taruga's site is down, I've attached the Taruga_AD1988b_rev4_Installer.zip that I recommend using. It should enable most functionality except for the front ports.
