What's up. Posting this topic in order to obtain further information on running OSx86 on Xeon platforms.

Not much info other than I have not been successful in booting up OSx86 at all.

I constantly get kernel panics. These are some screens of my attempts at running this with various commands:

http://www.geocities.com/checksumcharlie/panic_acpi.gif

http://www.geocities.com/checksumcharlie/panic_x86pc.gif

http://www.geocities.com/checksumcharlie/panicx86.gif

I have tried running it with the following: -x -v acpi=off platform=X86PC

Nothing works so far.

I'm running on a dual Xeon 2.0Ghz Prestonia with sse2 and HT on a Asus PCDL Deluxe board, Intel 875p chipset. 1gb ram.

Some people from the irc chan have also said they cannot run it on a Xeon CPU.

If anyone else has the same problem or if anyone is able to run it please post your screenshots, system specs, and your methods here!

Hi.

I succeded running OSX on my Dual 1.7Ghz Xeon SSE2 (HP X4000).

It's slow (only 128Mb RAM) and buggy but it works.

I Just used dd.exe to clone the vmware image from my windows HD to an other HD, and applied the SSE3->SSE2 patch.

I have a Radeon 9800 pro, i need to set the computer bios to 16Mb VRAM only to do a normal boot.

I have the same mobo running 2.8 GHz Xeons and have exactly the same problem in VMWare. Really, really annoying. Works fine on my P4 1.7GHz machine, though, so I have been able to play with it...

Hmm, seems like the chipset doesn't have much to do with it

running or not cuz some of us can run on Intel 875P and some cannot.

Well I managed to get a little further than the panic using the -f switch,

but not further than some loading. Screenshot of loading: http://www.geocities.com/checksumcharlie/load.gif

But system halts on some type of I/O error:

"SAM Multimedia: READ or WRITE failed, ASC = 0x24, ASCQ = 0x00"

http://www.geocities.com/checksumcharlie/halt.gif

Looks like it could be a prob with the hd img.

Just curious to the people that could not get it to work,

were you using VMWare at the time?

It seems like the people that got it running did it natively.

I myself am running it through vmware, which could be the prob.

So to everyone that got the panics try to use -f and -v

and see how far you get on that load and post results.

Just tried that and I got further too. I removed everything except hard disk and memory from the VMWare machine config, and in the VMWare BIOS setup (F2 on boot) I disabled the floppy drive, serial ports, and parallel port to minimize device issues.

Upon starting with "-f -v" I got a TON (several pages) of "Loading HFS+ file: xxxxx" messages, then the graphics mode changed and some more stuff happened, with processing terminating with the error shown in the attached pic.

Not sure if this is progress...

Yea it seems like when run in vmware it runs into some type of hd i/o errors.

Everyone that gets it going does it via native boot. perhaps vmware just doesn't

handle smp or ht correctly or something not sure. I guess you guys are

better off trying to dd or clone your image onto a spare hd. I can't do that right

now cuz im strapped for hd space. probably when I get a dvd burner and free

up some space ill be able to do that.

If anyone running on a Xeon actually gets this to go on a vm machine please post

some pics and your method of getting it going.

Please, report more of your experiences with Xeons in terms of speed and stability. Those that have double Xeons, does OSXx86 recognizes both CPUs? Those applications that are optimized for multiple CPUs ( like Photoshop, Final Cut, Mathematica and many others ) really use the 2nd processor and work fast?

Trying to boot natively on:

ASUS PC-DL

2x Prestonia 2Ghz

1 Gb DDR 333

with hard disk attached alone on primary IDE channel

doesn't work with options "-f -v -x"

The screen scrolls by with a bunch of "Loading..." messages and then

gives this error:

"BSD root: disk0s1, major 14, minor 1

Load of /sbin/launchd, errno 86, trying /sbin/mach_init

Load of /sbin/launchd failed, errno 86"

"BSD root: disk0s1, major 14, minor 1

  Load of /sbin/launchd, errno 86, trying /sbin/mach_init

Load of /sbin/launchd failed, errno 86"

The kernel loaded somehow, but it wasn't able to mount the root filesystem - it didn't find the Launch Daemon, nor (apparently) could it find the Mach kernel. Or else it mounted the filesystem but neither of those was in there, which is far less likely.

Now why that happened, is anybody's guess ...

I attached the exact same laptop hard disk from PC-DL system

to my Dell D610 and it loads and runs like greased lightning

without even using safe mode.

Look at the attached image for a screenshot.

Specs for the Dell D610 are in the image but I'll give it here again:

Pentium M 1.86 Ghz

1 GB DDR2 RAM

Intel 915GM graphics

AC '97 sound

Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Ethernet Controller

Intel PRO 2200BG Wireless

Intel 82801 USB 2.0

Everything seems to work but my USB mouse and the network.

I suspected Broadcom Gigabit would give problems.

There might be a chance the wireless will work.

If it can't connect to the network, it's useless to me.

It looks like there really is a genuine problem with Intel Xeon Prestonia

chips then.

I'll try to source at least one Nocona Xeon to get the greased lightning

effect on my workstation.

Just for the record:

VMware doesnt handle HFS+ correctly so using patched iso as cd will fail.

Release 1 seems to break platform=X86PC/ACPI.

Those trying in VMware should try to burn the cd and mount the station in VMware or try it native.

I tried everything myself, same setup Asus PC-DL deluxe with 2 x 2GHZ Xeon Prestonias. Tried it with HT on and off, ACPI on and off etc etc etc tried everything and didn't get anywhere with it. I have no idea what it could be but when I tried it with HT off and a platform command I think I got an error that said unsupported CPU or something like that....

Eitherway, I guess it doesn't matter since I'm replacing my dual xeon rig with a dual opteron one.

Here almost everything works.

: Dell sc1420 with 3Ghz Nocona, 1.5GB RAM, Radeon x700 512MB.

I need to manually start dock.app and some of the menu items, to get in touch with the desktop and such. Without starting these I have only contact with finder trough the finderwindows.

There is a few irritating bugs though, Safari is repeting this message while trying to use autocomplete or something:

A keychain cannot be found to store "kite."

...as example.

(options shown is: Cansel/Reset to Defaults)

There is no response when I trying to:

Force Quit

Sleep

Restart

Turn off

Cannot get in to loginitems, there is a funny message though:

"You cannot change login items because Login items"

Just got it installed using the marklar dvd patched w/ release 1.... flawless.

It boots up (without safemode) with no errors and everything works.

Sound works, network card works, haven't noticed any bugs...

I'm using a Dell Precision 670 Workstation. It has:

3.6GHz Intel Xeon (Nocona)

2GB DDR2 ECC ram

Integrated AC97 Audio

Intel network card..

Intel chipset... i believe it is E7252 or something close to that

Anyways, it's a complete success. I get a 42.59 using xbench ;)

And try disable USB,LPT,COM,AUDIO,ETHERNET.

My MacX86 DVD is a combo X86 and PPC of version 10.4.3 2.9GB Leter i put the torrent name.

Nothing work. :P

My computer is a Workstantion Dell precision 470

Another one here with xeon issues.

Dual 3.0gig xeon, PC-Dl 3gig ram

No install in VMware 5.0 at all I get this Error.

""BSD root: disk0s1, major 14, minor 1

Load of /sbin/launchd, errno 86, trying /sbin/mach_init

Load of /sbin/launchd failed, errno 86"

"

I tried a few different files that I’ve found on the net all with the same resault.

I've got some time to mess with this if anyone’s got any thoughts on how to fix it I am quite willing to help :)

I don't have the spare for another computer in the house otherwise I would do it native. So VMware is must.

Anyone know the exact reason why OSx will not like the Prestonia core?

Thanks everyone!

Ok, I've personally tested the following Xeon cores:

Prestonia... failed!

Nocona... success!

Gallatin... failed!

I want to know if anyone here has personally tested the Irwindale and Willamette cores. Please let me know if you had any luck.

-Brian

Intel and yours names. The next Xeon can call Björk. The processor comes in format of Duck.
