My Hackintosh

Everything came from Newegg.com

Gigabyte EP45C-UD3R

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550

4 Gigs of OCZ 800mhz DDR2 Ram

EVGA GeForce GTS 250 512MB Dual DVI

CORSAIR CMPSU-850TX 850WPower Supply

2 Hitachi Deskstar 1TB Hard Drives

(I prefer this one over the new super small silver flat ones.)

There is no link for this one, it has been disco'ed but you can find it on ebay.

Logitech Trackman Marble

( There are only two things that I think I would have a hard time living without on the Mac, if you removed these I would feel like I am missing an arm. That is "Quicksilver" http://www.blacktree.com/ and the second is my Logitech Trackball!

BLUETOOTH THAT WORKS- DLink DBT-120 (Rev B2+)

This is TOTALLY complements of member Stellarola:

http://stellarola.tumblr.com/

I am quoting exactly what he wrote:

"There’s lots of “compatible” bluetooth adapters out there, but not all are fully featured like the DLink DBT-120. This is the same chipset that Apple uses for their internal bluetooth modules. This model (Rev B2 and up) can accept firmware updates from Software Update and also always waking your system from sleep with bluetooth mice and keyboards."

Belkin G Wireless USB Network Adapter Basic Home Connectivity

Well this has been working great so far, been using it on my Hack Pro with not a single problem, decided that i would add another one to my work computer and went on ebay to save a few bucks. Well, there is a difference on these I have since found out. The one I bought on Ebay had a earlier version of the firmware installed on it and my Hack Pro would not work with it. I called Belkin and they explained to me that it was a older version based on the code numbers on the back of the unit. SO, if you are going to use this one, make sure you buy one with the latest firmware installed on it.

After much trial and error I have a USB Wifi Adapter that works on My Hack Pro.

Download the drivers here:

Ralink Drivers

Download and install this one first USB(RT2870 /RT2770 /RT307X /RT2070 /RT3572)

Then Download and install this one second. On the reboot you shoot see it appear on your hack.

Download this one too and install it second USB(RT257X/RT2671/RT2500)

Install it and reboot as it says.

Go to the Network Tab and add it, Bingo you should have Wifi on your Hack Pro.

Date of Update October 15, 2009 ***** UPDATE If you are using this motherboard make sure you plug your hard drive/drives and CD/DVD drive into the orange sata ports and not the purple ones. *****

Another user was having a hard time with the motherboard recognizing the hard drive it was suppose to boot from with multiple drives in it. It would get hung up and not move forward. Unplugged his drives from the purple sata connections and plugged them into the orange ones, worked great. Image below:

Date of Update October 15, 2009 ***** UPDATE, Well installed the ESATA Card that came with my Gigabyte motherboard and it is working like a champ, nothing to install extra.*****

Well plugged the two sata connections into the two PURPLE sata slots on the mother board. Plugged the power connection to the Power Supply also ran a second power cord out the back of the Hackintosh for powering a second drive since there are two connections. Powered up the computer, plugged in a sata drive sitting outside the computer and the Hackintosh recognized it right away. Man the transfer rate on this is smoken FAST! Here is an image of the esata card that came with this motherboard.

I have a

Gigabyte EP45C-UD3R

8 Gigs of Ram

NVidia 9800 GT 512MB Dual DVI

I used the Directions and Magic Installer from Life Hacker to install Snow Leopard and it worked like a Champ. It was clean and everything works perfectly. No KP's what so-ever, even when I ran Disk Utilities! Everything just worked right from the start. Even Sound worked right from the install when I switched the input as per the instructions.

It even shows everything that is in my computer correctly when I got to About this Mac.

Man I wish I was a programmer!

.......

Thanks for your report! I am now busy to do a SL install on a Gigabyte EP45-UD3R.

I hope it works out but after reading this I'm confident ^_^ !

Did you update to 10.6.1 already? Is it a go or no go on your EP45C-UD3R?

Yea, I have updated with no problem. I did have one minor problem when installing little snitch, make sure it is the version that supports Snow Leopard and if you are going to change it to boot 32 bit Kernel, make sure you install little snitch with the 64 bit kernel before switching it over to the 32 bit kernel or you will get the screen of death on the re-boot.

I have updated it and am running the latest version. Again all credit for this post goes to the OSX86 Community Programmers and Lifehacker.

Wondering if GA-EP45-UD3R will work the same way? I see that you motherboard is EP45C, a bit different.

I believe it would because this setup and instruction and magic installer where tested and setup to run on a EP45UD3P and it works on my machine perfectly too.

Try it and report back, if it works on your board too you could post a thread for all the Hackintosh users that have that board.

I will report back to you tomorrow. Just installed SL 10.6 on the EP45-UD3R using the Lifehacker tutorial and now testing it all. Works fine so far. Now updating it to 10.6.1. Keep your fingers crossed :censored2:

Accel,

That is awesome! I tried many of the other installers when they first came out because I am impatient but finally just decided to go back to Leopard until something really stable, clean and simple came along. Lifehackers tutorial was it.

I just ordered the parts for this and am anxiously waiting for them. One thing I'm missing, however, is a wireless adapter. Does anyone have a recommendation of USB or PCI, or better yet: a suggestion for one that will work for sure with this configuration?

Thanks a lot.

BatterseaPS,

I can't really answer your question with personal experience because I have NONE with wireless cards for this board. I have always plugged my Gigabyte Hackintosh directly into the router with an ethernet cable. I am sure that there are people out there with Gigabyte motherboards and probably even this same board that have and know which wireless cards work for sure right out of the box.

I did some searching around and found some solutions that will work. See the main post in this thread.

What could I say? I tried so many ways to get my board working with Snow Leoaprd but failed, with this tutorial, it just work for the first time I tried.

My board: GA-EP45-UD3R

Video card: Nvidia 8800 GT

8GB RAM

Thanks so much, and I have already update to 10.6.1, no problem at all. CI/QE working, digital output works, restart/shutdown no problem, 64-bit enabled automatically.

However, my firewire 400 device can't be mount up, waiting for solution right now.

Rockia,

I don't have a firewire device or I would test it on my board to see if I would have the same problem. Let me know when you find a solution and what the solution or fix is and I will post it at the top of this thread??

This is basically a dupe thread.

Also it was posted in the wrong place. This is a tutorial.

rest assured son,

I am not interested in getting into a battle with you but I am going to respond to your thread. If you are saying this is a "Dupe" Thread in referring to scambler_455's thread here, http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=187440 If you look at the time when his was posted, it was Sep 18 2009, 05:09 PM. My post was on Sep 18 2009, 08:01 AM. Now, even though both post are similar It does not really matter because he is asking about your experience with Lifehackers tutorial. If you are referring to the other member that posted this same board way before me and people replied, yes both threads talk about the same board but I tired his thread and found Lifehackers tutorial and magic installer was much easier and just worked.

Last, about this thread being in the wrong place, I disagree. OSx86 Installation section is only for directions on how to install something. I don't need instructions, and most people that where using Leopard don't need instructions. New release and updates is what I have been looking for to make my board work. When I came across Lifehacker tutorial I posted it in this section NOT because it is just a tutorial BUT because they created an UPDATE in the form of a NEW PIECE OF SOFTWARE called the "MAGIC INSTALLER" that does all the terminal work making it VERY EASY to install Snow Leopard.

Rajesheber,

Disclaimer: Any advice that I post is based on my experience with my board and the hardware that I am using, you may experience different results based on your hardware and bios settings, having said that, I will tell you what my experiences have been. Also, always double check against other threads of people with the same board as yours, having said that, here are my thoughts.

Okay, as I posted in the first thread, when I first installed Leopard on this hackintosh about a year ago, everything worked. I had no problems, when using Video IChat when I first set up Leopard I had NO PROBLEMS with it. Now as time went on and I did the updates of OS X Leopard, towards the end of using Leopard with all the updates installed, I started to get FREEZE UP's with Video IChat.

I have guessed and I could be wrong, as Apple started moving towards Snow Leopard and new code was updated using the OS X Updates that some of the new code from the updates conflicted with IChat and the Hackintosh setup. I would be using it and randomly it would lock up my computer. I would have to power down my computer and re-start it to get it working again.

Now with Snow Leopard installed, I have two problems that I have had to deal with. First, Using Quicktime 8, after watching a video for a short period of time, it locks up my computer. My solution to this was go back to using Quicktime 7, no problems with Quicktime 7. Since the first thread posted here, I have had a chance to Use Video IChat and ever so often it is still freezing up my computer, just like it was doing with Leopard, So, I am even more sure it has to do with something in the New Code and the Hackintosh not playing nice together.

** These problems could just be a glitch in my computer, when I first installed Leopard a long time ago and since then I have Hard Powered this computer down many, many, many times in the learning process while trying to get everything working and find all the kext files that would work so, I could have damaged it, who knows. You might not experience any of these issues**

Last, this is just my own thoughts, I have thought since most of the problems have come as the updates have come closer to Snow Leopard that it could be a result of Apple now trying to harness the power of the processors in the video cards and that could be causing some of the problems with IChat, Quicktime and my Hackintosh randomly freezing up but I could be way off base on that one.

So, over all I am happy with my hackintosh even with these problems I have to deal with currently, I could go back to Leopard 10.6 without update and everything would be perfect again but I am hoping that a lot of this stuff will be fixed as we move forward. The set up that I have would have cost me close to 3K from Apple. If I have to put up with a few things that are not perfect, well I can do that for now considering what I paid and got for my Hackintosh.

Hope this helps.

Oh Ya, I believe your video card would work and ethernet and audio work PERFECTLY!, not a single problem with them.

Macmodifier,

Thank you so much for ur reply. I would like to know whether u had ethernet and audio working OOB using Lifehackers installer. Since Lifehacker has said in his guide that the ethernet dint work so he has used another PCI ethernet card.

My next question is will the life hacker guide automatically detect my 8800gt card or only 9980 Cards only.

Last question is how would u rate ur hackintosh with an equal real Mac machine.

What could I say? I tried so many ways to get my board working with Snow Leoaprd but failed, with this tutorial, it just work for the first time I tried.

I would like to know how the installation of the 8800GT card went on. Is it u used the lifehackers installer alone to get the card.how is the graphics performance

rajesheber,

To answer your first question, " Did I have internet and audio out of the box?", the answer is, YES. Both my internet and audio(after I changed the input in the system preferences as per the guide) worked and is working flawlessly, I did not have to buy or add anything. That was the beauty of the Magic Installer. My board is a slightly different model then his.

As far as your video card, I believe that he is using a generic NVidia String and I believe your card will work right out of the box, if for some reason it does not, I am sure you will be able to get it working, there is Tons of support for NVidia 8800GT cards in the OSX86 Community.

The last question, I don't think is fair to ask. One is a real Mac the other is a Hackintosh. One is completely supported by the same people that write the operating system(Apple), the other is supported by very talented group of programmers and community of people.

I personally think that the Hackintosh has come a long long wait but still has a ways to go and will always be fixing problems as we move forward.

Now, last, I am really happy with my hackintosh. Even with, the problems that I have and one's that I am sure I will have to deal with in the future. If you want a machine that you will never have to figure anything out and just works out of the box, I would recommend buying a real Mac. If, you can deal with some of the issues that I talked about if they come up then, money wise and what you get for your money, a Hackintosh is the way to go.

I can't say for sure if it would work straight out of the box for you. I went to Newegg and typed your first board "GA-EP45T-UD3R" and got this message "We have found 0 items that match"GA-EP45T-UD3R". Seeing that Newegg does not sell this board here in the US, If I was you I would probably stay away from that one.

The second board "GA-EP45T-UD3LR" Newegg does sell, actually, I almost bought this board a while back. As far as working, I could not say. It does have the same Chipset as the one I currently have, the main difference appears to be the Ram it is using. This board uses only DDR3 ram, the newer ram where as the EP45C-UD3R uses Both DDR3 and DDR2. I am currently using DDR2 800mhz Ram in my EP45C-UD3R. Not sure if Lifehackers tutorial and Magic Installer would recognize the DDR3, that would be a question to ask him on his site since he created it.

I believe that it would recognize your video card at the very least but that would also be a good question to ask Lifehacker when you ask him about that board. One other thing, you might try looking to see if others have that board in these forums and what there experience has been that way if you give this a try and it does not work you will at least have another route you can try.

Hope this helps.
