Alright, I'm going nuts! I updated to 10.5.7 and everything worked fine afterwards except for audio.

It's for my Gateway laptop with Sigmatel 9250.

I remember one day I found a zip file with the AppleHDApatcher, a custom AppleHDA.kext, and several codec dumps (and a few of them were specifically for Gateway laptops). I NEED TO FIND THIS FILE! It was the ONLY thing that has ever worked.

I have a Gateway laptop with the exact same audio chipset. I bumped into your post when looking for a fix and was not able to find anything helpful so, after getting sound working, I thought I would post so hopefully anyone else looking won't hit a hurdle.

I just booted into Linux via a LiveCD and catted the sound codex* to a txt file (don't try to copy into rich text - it won't work). I then used AppleHDAPatcher 1.20 to create the kext (module). I rebooted and viola - sound.

You can download the codex dump I used as a text file or, if you need AppleHDAPatcher as well, grab the text file and the app in a zip.

I have a couple super cheap USB sound "cards" that for some reason have always worked! One is like this model:

The other is actually a really nice Creative that I got during an outlet sale for under $10

If you're at your wits end or you don't care and just want to get sound to at least work it may be worth a try.

*There are other posts out there if you need to do this for a different chipset.
