Hi All,

very greatful for Mysticus for all his effort, this is a brilliant guide here. I have just received my nc10 and would loved to start installing osx straight away. Sadly, the iso is not available anymore, only on shrangle, for which I am reluctant to pay. If some kind soul could let me know how to get the image, it would be very much appreciated. I do own a proper, legal copy of Leopard.

And another question: Is it possible to install a rEFIt-like graphical boot menu on this system?

Headphone to speaker switching works on the NC10 via the switch.ch scripts that are floating around on the net. The MSI Wind version does not work b/c the Device IDs needed to be modified. I have the simple Sound Switch application working perfectly on my NC10 -- same as it was on my previous Wind. Audieee could probably be made to work with the same type of DeviceID changes, but that is not my area of expertise.

Could you possibly post the switch.sh which works for you, or where you got it from?

From the looks of it, switch.sh (and Audieee) auto-detects the correct device, but the actual sequences sent to the hardware to make the changes are hard-coded and likely codec-specific. Therefore, all that's probably required are the 'send-verb' lines.

Hi everybody!
First of all, I want to thank Mysticus for the great job done!

Here's my starting setup:
- black NC10 UK edition (I found surprisingly that it's sold also here in Italy by Pixmania at 360 Euro; the Italian version is available only in white or blue; I prefer to have a more programmer-friendly keyboard rather than the Italian keyboard, and the black color looks more "professional").
- internal wifi card replaced with a Broadcom Wireless DELL DW 1490 (to install the XP driver I simply connected the Ethernet LAN to Internet and then I ran the hardware setup wizard in Win)
- RAM upgraded to 2GB
- latest BIOS (04CA), default setup except EBD enabled
- only two partitions: 30GB NTFS for XP, the rest for MacOSX (I removed all the rest, including partitions for restore... ). To do that I had to completely restore XP using Samsung disks.

I have been able to install Leopard 10.5.6 with an external USB2 DVD reader using the original JaS 10.5.4 DVD patched with JAS_to_NC10-10.5.6.ppf patch. I preferred to avoid the ddmac method to save some space on HD. The installation didn't take long anyway.

After installation:
- configured Quicksilver (already available in /Applications) as described in Mysticus guide, to enable brightness keys
- installed Brightness_Icon_Update_for_10.5.6_.pkg to have better looking icons
- installed uk_keyboard_layout_fix.pkg (almost all keys are mapped correctly: Alt & Alt Gr = Command; 'Windows logo' key = Option; Ctrl = Ctrl ; Fn not mapped?; the 'Menu' key is mapped to something, but I don't know what; the "|\" key next to the right shift isn't mapped but the same functionality is achieved with the top-left key below ESC "`|"; F1 to F12 work properly, and can be possibly remapped in System Preferences / Keyboard & Mouse / Keyboard Shortcuts)
- the trackpad panel didn't show up in System Preferences, so I had to install trackpadfull.pkg (it's weird that the two directories "/System/Library/PreferencePanes/Trackpad.prefPane" and "/System/Library/PreferencePanes/Trackpad.prefPane.old" (original, before pkg installation) have the same content... but it worked...)
- installed all available software updates: iTunes, AirPort Util, Safari, QuickTime, Java Update, Front Row Update, QuickTime H264 Update.
- CHUD 4.6.1 seems to be already installed, if you use this NC10 10.5.6 DVD release.
- audio: internal microphone doesn't work, internal speakers work, the rest I didn't check.
- as expected... sleep works in battery mode; while in power supply mode the computer wakes up spontaneously after few seconds of sleep; to shutdown/sleep you have to use the power button, lid open/close is not detected; Ethernet LAN doesn't work.
- AirPort: perfect (with Dell DW 1490).
- Bluetooth works.
- Memory card reader: didn't try.
- External monitor: didn't try.
- small issue: brightness setting isn't 'remembered' after sleep or reboot.
- if you want to "recover" few vertical pixels hiding the menu bar, I recommend 'PresentYourApps', that works especially well with Firefox.

Now I have a few questions:
- is it possible to disable the trackpad when you use a mouse? I selected the checkbox "Ignore trackpad when mouse is present" in the Trackpad preference panel, but it has no effect.
- the trackpad vertical sensitivity is much higher than the horizontal. Is it possible to change it so have a more "symmetric" response? Which files could be tweaked to get this?

again, go to the end of the file and add a few blank lines and add:

After that let the computer go to sleep and when it wakes up, the monitor will restore to it's previously saved brightness level.

I'm in a similar boat, except I actually paid for shrangle use and downloaded the rar files.

However, when trying the unrar the files, the files require an encryption password.

I've tried using the associated numbers in the rtf file and it tells me that they the wrong passwords.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Brightness
========

I tried this solution (with the difference that I called the /Library/Scripts/Brightness/change_brightness script), every time I put my NC10 to sleep it writes the value 255 (even though I have manually set the value to 30). Strange thing is that sometimes when I wake up the NC10 the brightness has been set to 25, this is the case even when I manually change the rc.wakeup script to set the brightness to 30.

It seems to me that the timing of this being called as the system is preparing to go to sleep might be causing this?

Sleep on AC
=========

From what I can tell, a (internal) USB device is causing the NC10 to wake up from sleep when on AC, it might be something to do with the USB devices being allowed to wake the computer from sleep on AC. I wonder if there is some way we could disable the usb controller(s) through a unix script and we could call this when the NC10 sleeps and enable the controller(s) again when it wakes up. I know the proper way would be to fix the DSDT functions but I just don't have the experience to attempt this. Same goes for the fact that the brightness backlight control functions are missing from the DSDT. I'm pretty sure these could be added in (I imagine the registers / IO would be the same as the reggie_se command line parameters)

Sleep on Lid Close
==============

You can use the Clamshell.kext (I think that is the correct name) to put the NC10 to sleep when you close the lid, it doesnt wake when you open the lid again though....not sure if this can be fixed (I'll need to look when I go home)

Bluetooth On/Off
=============

I noticed when I first installed OSx that the option to turn Bluetooth On/Off was greyed out in the menu, and also if you booted with a Bluetooth device connect then it would cause Bluetooh to turn off. For anyone else having this problem, both issues can be fixed by editing the Info.plist file in the Bluetooth Kext. I can dig out the change when I get home if anyone is interested.

I used the one from superhai as far as I can remember, just need to figure out how to wake when the lid is opened, but I notice the source is included on that page so it would be possible to tweak the code. I'm no low-level coder but I'm going to have a look at this when I finish work.

It was on the iso's thread on that demonic torrent-tracker site. And from what I have gathered, that was exactly the reason why it was removed from there: Had mboto included a txt file with the password in the torrent, it would not have been removed.

I have unfortunately not seen the torrent, it is also possible that the password was included in it, in that case I have absolutely no idea why it was removed...

...And it would be soooo wonderful if someone could republish and seed it again!

I actually went through most of the 57 pages of this forums, (the trick is to use firefox with the autopager add on, then keep scrolling down till all 57 pages appear at once, then press ctrl + f, and do a keyword search). Anyway, even though i've looked i cant seem to find a solid answer for these questions:

On the NC10 if you press Fn + F8 while in XP, you can switch from Silent to Normal to Speed mode. what happens when your press this key combination using OSX?

I know that apple doesnt support the Atom processor, so SpeedStep is not supported by default. This causes the processor to run at 1.6 Ghz the whole time. Is there a way to change this? is a solution on the way?

Wouldn't having the processor constantly running at 1.6 Ghz make the battery run out faster? or am i mistaking.


I read tons of comments on people running leopard and getting 4 or five hours of battery life. Could this be higher is the processor wasnt running at 1.6 Ghz all the time.

If im overlookig something, please let me know.

Fn + F8 does nothing on my NC10 in OSX.
I am running msiwindos86x + 10.5.6 update + Mysticus' fix + brightness + AzaliaAudio.
I also get 4-5 hours of battery, especially with the brightness turned down.

Is there a way to get speedstep working? I found this info (http://forums.msiwind.net/mac/experimental-intel-speedstep-kext-t2479.html.) about someone running this kext on their MSI WIND and they were able to select frequencies.

I imagine this kext would work correctly with the nc10, given that they are both very similar.

thanks, autopager is the reason i stopped using Chrome and switched to Firefox. There are so many add ons, hopefully chrome will have features like this in the future.

I have a problem with the deskstop picture prefs getting turned off. I set it to random picture every 5, 10 or 15 min, and sometimes I restart and it is simple blue screen, i go to set it again and the settings are in. but I have to click on a picture to start it going again.
