Mac OS X Unlocker for VMware

============================

1. Introduction

---------------

The package is a combination of the Unlocker code written by Zenith432 plus some

fixes and scripts written by myself that wrap the actual unlocker code.

It has been tested against:

* Workstation 8/9/10 on Windows and Linux (32 & 64-bit versions)

* Player 4/5/6 on Windows and Linux (32 & 64-bit versions)

* Fusion 4/5/6 on Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks

* ESXi 5.0/5.1/5.5

The patch code carries out the following modifications dependent on the product

being patched:

* Fix vmware-vmx and derivatives to allow Mac OS X to boot

* Fix vmwarebase .dll or .so to allow Apple to be selected during creation

* Copy darwin.iso if needed to VMware folder

Note that not all products recognise the darwin.iso via install tools menu item.

You will have to manually mount the darwin.iso for example on Workstation.

Also Player is missing vmware-vmx-debug and vmware-vmx-stats files and so an

error is shown during patching as the files are not found. This can be safely

ignored.

OS X guests on ESXi patched hosts cannot be controlled from vCenter, only from

the ESXi host itself. This means power operations have to be run directly on

the server.

The vmwarebase code does not need to be patched on ESXi or OS X so you will see a

message on those systems telling you that it will not be patched.

In all cases make sure VMware is not running, and any background guests have

been shutdown.

2. Windows

----------

On Windows you will need to either run cmd.exe as Administrator or using

Explorer right click on the command file and select "Run as administrator".

install.cmd - patches VMware and copies darwin.iso tools image to VMware

uninstall.cmd - restores VMware and removes darwin.iso tools image from VMware

3. Linux

---------

On Linux you will need to be either root or use sudo to run the scripts.

You may need to ensure the contents of the linux folder have execute permissions

by running chmod +x against the 4 files.

install.sh - patches VMware and copies darwin.iso tools image to VMware

uninstall.sh - restores VMware and removes darwin.iso tools image from VMware

4. Mac OS X

-----------

On Mac OS X you will need to be either root or use sudo to run the scripts.

This is really only needed if you want to use client versions of Mac OS X.

You may need to ensure the contents of the osx folder have execute permissions

by running chmod +x against the 3 files.

install.sh - patches VMware

uninstall.sh - restores VMware

5. ESXi

-------

You will need to transfer the zip file to the ESXi host either using vSphere client or SCP.

Once uploaded you will need to either use the ESXi support console or use SSH to

run the commands. Use the unzip command to extract the files.

<<< WARNING: use a datastore volume to run the scripts >>>

Please note that you will need to reboot the host for the patches to become active.

The patcher is embbedded in a shell script local.sh which is run at boot from /etc/rc.local.d.

You may need to ensure the contents of the esxi folder have execute permissions

by running chmod +x against the 3 files.

install.sh - patches VMware

uninstall.sh - restores VMware

Note:

1. System should have a persistent scratch partition - should be OK except for stateless

and USB boot on drives less than 4GB

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1033696

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=isg3T1013015

http://www.vreference.com/2011/04/28/check-for-esxi-scratch-persistence/

2. Any changes you have made to local.sh will be lost. If you have made changes to

that file, you will need to merge them into the supplied local.sh file.

3. This option runs at boot time to patch the releavant files and it now survives

an upgrade or patch to ESXi as local.sh is part of the persisted local state.

6. Zenith432's Unlocker

-----------------------

In all cases the unlocker can be run without the scripts but you would need to

carry out additional actions which the scripts encapsulate for you especially on

ESXi. If you want to run the unlocker directly the parameters are:

Usage: Unlocker [-h] [-u] [target_directory]

-h: print help

-u: remove the patch

target_directory: customize location of vmx executables

On all platforms you must run it with administrator or root privileges.

The source code is provided and Zenith432 makes it freely available for

modification. I have modified the code and it is available as per Zenith432's

original statement.

Thanks to Zenith432 for building the unlocker and Mac Son of Knife for all

the testing and support.

Great work! Love it!

In Workstation 11, the vmware-vmx.exe, vmware-vmx-debug.exe, vmware-vmx-stats.exe files are removed from the main folder (C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Workstation). But they still exist in the x64 subfolder. By copying them from said subfolder to the main, the unlocker program finishes successfully!

However: when we actually boot the OS X VM (all options look fine) it boots but remains stuck at the Apple logo with spinning donut.

So after hours of trying to figure out why I can't get the unlocker to work on my ESXi server (Installs fine, but guest never gets past grey apple screen, no spinny wheel), it suddenly occurs to me - I'm not running an Intel host, I'm running an AMD host.

My lack of knowledge around the subject not withstanding, should I be presuming that OSX will only install on a real Intel core?

regards,

Paul

I'm running ESXI 5.5, Patch 1

I keep getting the error below when trying to run the installer for OSX. This only happens with OSX. Has anyone else seen this error and what did you do to fix it? Thank you.

ESXi 5.5.0 u2 (build 2068190)
VMware Unlocker 1.3.0
Guest OSs : MacOSX server 10.9.5, MacOSX Server 10.6.8

Hello

VMware Unlocker 1.3.0 works perfectly for our configurations - many thanks!. Although I have some question about virtual NIC drivers and MacOS guests:

e1000 on the guest OS crashes the ESXi host (purple screen) on heavy NIC-load on the guest OS (no difference if VMware Tools for darwin are installed or not). The problem should have been addressed with the actual ESXi 5.5 update 2 but it seems to persist.

Is there any possibility to enable vmxnet3 on the guest MacOSX OS? Is there some "third party" driver to be installed on the guest MacOSX OS? Unfortunately VMware Tools for Darwin does not contain such drivers.

In the mean time we have manually enabled on the guest.vmx file the e1000e NIC instead of e1000. e1000e seems to be stable and has not provoked any ESXi crash in the last 3 days.

Some other question about network performance. Are the e1000 or e1000e NIC drivers on the guest MacOSX limiting the transfer rate to 1Gb/s or can this limit be outreached? Teaming configuration (two or more virtual nics) on the guest MacOSX is possible, but does not work properly. Is there an other possibility to outreach the 1Gb/s limitation of the virtual NIC on the guest MacOSX?

Many thanks for any considerations.

Donk, i am having some trouble getting this unlocker to work on ESXi 5.0.0 Build 469512. I need to use 5.0.0 as the PCI Passthrough is much better than ESXi 5.5.0, Could you supply me version 1.0? I have tried version 1.0.1 and it does not work correctly. It boots but eventually the cross out comes up over the apple logo.

I am also using ESXi 5.0.0 469512 and cannot get any OSX iso to work properly. I found some hacked up 10.8 iso that gets me to the install menu but the virtual SCSI disk is not found under diskutil. When i use a virtual IDE I never get to the install menu.

I have tried Donk Unlocker ver 1.3 and 1.1, both successfully installed (1.3 I had to manually patch my rc.local file being as there is no /etc/rc.local.d/ on ESXi 5.0.0). I have used a few retail DMG's that I've tried converting to iso and renaming to ISO, both unsuccessful.

I've tried various dmg/iso's of OSX 10.5, 10.6, 10.7, 10.8, all with no luck so far.

Any advice? On a positive note, I had no issues running the unlocker on my windows box with Player6 and installing osx 10.8 with my weirdo iso.

Fixed my problem by converting my dmg with dmg2img. I was using UltraISO.

Yes, as noted previously, the vmx files were moved from the main directory to an x64 subdirectory. I moved the vmx files to the main directory, the installer then succeeds, but clearly there are new checks. I moved the vmx files back to original location and now get this error when attempting to boot an OSX VM.

Other VM types boot and run normally, so there seems to be new or additional checks of some type. Booting OSX without the patch gives an Apple logo and a spinner, but never continues.

I can also confirm that Unlocker 1.3.0 does not work on workstation 11.  I also moved the files around (out of x64 and then back) so they could be updated and then moved them back and it did not work.  It appears that the only OS that got unlocked was OSX 10.8 so OSX 10.10 would not load.  I don't have OSX 10.8 so I could not test that.  Let us know if there is anything else we could try.

I doubt 10.8 got unlocked properly either. Probably just a GUI glitch. After moving, unlocking, and moving the files back, my OSX 10.9 VM shows OS as "Other: OSX 10.9", which is what it shows on a non-unlocked copy of VMware Workstation 10. After unlocking, I'd always see "OSX: OSX 10.9" and the VM would then boot.

Ahh. Donk is on top of it, we're all in the wrong place: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/303107-status-of-unlocker-20/

Unlocker 2.0.3, finally. It works with VMware workstation 11 and OS X 10.9.x!

I didn't try with Yosemite due to technical limitations but I hope can run it. Good luck!

I successfully installed Yosemite 10.10 on ESXi 5.1. but i'm unable to passthrough GPU. I'm having Radeon HD 7770. In ESXi under configuration and advance setting.. It is showing gradeout and says host doesnot support pass through configurtion.
I enabled the Virtualization and VT for Direct I/0 in PC BIOS but still in ESXi passthrough is gradeout.  Pls someone put light on the issue.

Hey guys,

I don't know if this post is still very active...

I followed the procedure and uploaded the files to the datastore and chmod them so they could be executed...   did the install.sh and checked to make sure local.sh had been replaced and everything looks fine... Rebooted the machine... tried to create a VM for OSX10.7 and it is listed there... but when I start the VM and try to boot up with my OSX10.7 ISO it just keeps going to a shell window and stops there....

any clue what I might have done wrong ???

Thanks for your help !!
